  • The Atezr P20 is a new 20W entry in the diode laser arena and in this review, I will walk through the details of this unit and compare it to the venerable xTool D1Pro to see if the Atezr is a worthy competitor. It offers solid features and a great price, and if you are looking for choices in the high-end segment of the market then this might be the laser for you.

    *Excellent review Steve!* xTool missed the boat by trying to copy the Glowforge model, and making the machine settings proprietary. If it weren't for that, the D1 would be a good product. Now on to the 6, 6W diode laser! The 36W is on the way! Thanks for the shoutout!

      It is one place where xTool got it right, though FWIW, the rest of the P20 laser is pretty awesome and there are many things I like about the Atezr more than the D1Pro - including the price.
      Toward the end of my initial time with the Atezr P20, I had mostly figured out how to do alignment, though as I mentioned in the video, I have seen a few people punching the protective plastic out of the front so they could see the beam - this is pretty unsafe though. My tendency is to 3D print a frame that the shield could slide into and mount that on the front of the laser module. This would let me slide the shield out when I'm aligning and then reinsert it for operation.

    Good review, looking at details you don't observe until you have it on your desk (I have it now after Louisiana HG's recommendation).
    @ about 12'15" you mention the rollers. The plastic part (the tyre, so to speak) is not teflon, as you mention, but POM. Getting at the asymmetric nuts that control the pressure / force versus the rail, is a bit awkward, but possible.
    One of my roller arrays tended to limp a bit along its way. Very careful correction of the bearing force allowed me to optimize the run to a pretty smooth mode. If you leave them going in steps, you will rather get a superimposed pattern on gravures, the steppers' setting phase depends on the force executed on them. The reason behind that behaviour is a not-quite-perfect roundness, a property that ALL these simple rollers are subject to. Linear rails are better, but then a) more expensive, b) more sensitive to dirt, dust, debris.
    The positioning could become easier with the camera option of lightburn, but then you have other potential issues (solid, reproduceable camera position, lens nonlinearities etc.)
    - A simple conventional scale printed on the rails might be useful... Martin (Ultimartinum here - all in german, but hey, we are able to learn english, the process is reversible!) has made a very good tutorial about the camera use in Lightburn.

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  Год назад +1

      I've never considered using a camera on a diode laser. I guess if it's in some sort of box it might be useful.
      The wheel adjustment isn't an uncommon operation on most new lasers, but I agree that it's a bit tedious on the P20 because they've made it more challenging to get too. I had to adjust mine too when I assembled it.
      You're right about the wheel composition. However if these really bother you, for about $20 you can buy steel wheels on Amazon to replace them. You can also get these in polycarbonate which is a bit more durable than the POM/Delrin wheels.

  • @qapla

    Steve, I've seen several of your laser reviews now. You did a comparison of the XTool and the Otur - how does this compare with the Otur? Maybe a side-by-side-by-side video would be nice.
    You mentioned how the laser makers have been around for a while and still have poor cable management, the built-in cables as well as the plug-in ones) - I would like to see them move the power, and USB towards the back of the machine - but I would really like to see them add LAN connection, so the laser can be on the network, not just one computer or rely on WiFi.
    Thanks for the videos - keep 'em coming

    • @SteveMakesEverything
      @SteveMakesEverything  Год назад

      I miss ethernet too :-). There is a WiFi connection but laser companies always seem to do a half-baked job, rather than make lasers look like network printers. As far this compared to an Ortur. The P20 will definitely be better at cutting than the LM3; however if your primary use case is grayscale photo engraving then I would lean to the OLM3, which seems to handle grayscale better than anyone else. Note that if you are rendering photos with something like Stucki rather than grayscale, then I would be back to the P20 just for the speed.

    Can you have the Air Assist controlled automatically via Lightburn?

The price of 10W laser is falling pretty quickly due to the growth of 20W units, so this isn’t likely to save you much though. Is the discount code supposed to work for the 35W?
    It is very tempting, especially if there is a discount available. I am still within the return period for my 20W D1 Pro. I want to cut items that are 17" x 17", which I can fit on the X axis but not the Y, so I have to do them in two stages at the moment. If I decide to keep it, I will buy the extension and that will solve it, but there are some other things that concern me about it.
    The lack of an alignment guide on the Atezr is a real problem though. It would make Lightburn's brilliant Print and Cut feature unusable. Atezr's return policy also worries me.

      I added a link in the description for the V35. Not sure what the discount will be on new lasers though. The lack of a sighting guide can be compensated for somewhat in lightburn by enable the laser at low power during framing

      @@SteveMakesEverything Thank you for the reply. That is how I do things now when I cut my 17" pieces. I have no choice because I do not have 16mm to spare on the X-axis. I guess removing the shield is the only solution.
