True. Nick Elphick is a genious restorer and sculptor. I watched him restore a "medici" terracotta urn. At first I got annoyed because he left bits out. Then it hit me; he restored the urn to look unrestored.....
My God this fellow has some serious talent. Even with the close up camera work I couldn’t see the repairs. The paint/colors are matched and blended so perfectly. Amazing job. This gentleman has definitely been blessed by God👍🙂
LOVE restoration videos. It's an entire art all on its own. Also, I appreciate this as a Catholic, because statues are part of our visual culture. The Santo as an art form is quite important in my country, and it follows the Spanish iconographic tradition.
I'm seriously jealous of this guy. He's chosen a profession that (used with care) adds to the rich history of this world. I suspect I could have done something similar, but I made different choices. Ah well. Good luck to him :)
No. The true genious of Nick Elphick's restorations is he knows when to stop. You want an object restored up to a certain point only. There's no point in trying to make it look new again. A "new" madonna would certainly not make £3000.....
@@ninaelsbethgustavsen2131 Not necessarily. It could have been the case that there was no damage on the face...and that would have been its true state. If he had repaired both sides no one would have known anything different - but it would have looked better.
There is a difference between restoration and conservation, the restoration shown here is to deliberate convey aged damage while stabilising the piece from further damage in future
Or...you could look at it this way: Mother Mary, is wearing the cross where she saw her son, our God, our Saviour Jesus, being killed and still...her heart remain so pure and so full of love that she still has love for us. She is the Mother of mothers, our Lady, the Mother of God. 🙏
If you're going to restore it, fix the face completely! Our Lady does not deserve to have any imperfections left in her beautiful face. Very disappointing. There are other ways to try to keep the aged look and make it look like it was never touched without leaving big cracks in her face. :(
He scrub the head as if he was scrubing a wooden floor i cant even continue watching after seeing that. I felt bad he should be a very gentle and treated it with respect. The asmr scrubbing gets me so uncomforatble and with his mouth
Everything looks great except for the finger. The other fingers are curved where the knuckles are, like natural fingers. The finger that is carved is not much more than a straight dowel with a fingernail much bigger than the others. And to all those who will now jump my case and say I can't do better: I say I could!! I'm 58 years old and I have been hand carving things like fishing lures, walking staffs and much, much more since I was a child. So go ahead and jump my case; I don't care!!! The finger needs to be redone: It looks fake, not like the others!!!! The man did a great job but he needs to work on his carving skills a bit.
Don't forget that eight out of ten fingers on that sculpture were restored. She only had thumbs left, the poor thing. The pointing index fingers is obviously a common thing for old catholic sculpture.... "Thumbs up" simply won't do ! 😉
@@ninaelsbethgustavsen2131 ~ I stand corrected and gladly so. I did not take into account the eight fingers. My bad and thank you for pointing that out. With that said I recant my previous statement. All😉 is well!!
I doubt the figure has 200 years , doesn't look baroque n'or rococo. Either 19 or beginnings of 20th century or even just a "doll" to fill the program with.
Don't let a mere old sculpture upset you, Betty. Regardless your own thought on religion. This is an old sculpture, made with love and devotion. And restored with the utmost respect. Let all be blissful in their own faith. 💖

I did furniture restoration for 45 years and enjoy seeing an artist at work. Good job. Not everyone can do this type of work.....

Lovely, dear Mary.
This guy and his work, just so fascinating!
That work to me is the most amazing and skillful combined art and craftmanship ever.

Beautiful representation of the blessed mother and very beautiful restoration ♥️

Sure it would have looked "better" with the face fully restored.
But it is an antique, and it must be allowed to look it's age.

@@davidcoomber4050 Perhaps but I'd have preferred a solid repair. Just because something is very old, doesn't mean it has to be damaged. :)

Man look at that straight up hood gold cross that lady is carrying, she must have a lot of swag as teens would say these days.
