- On 8th March 1965, the branch line between Whitby and Malton in the Yorkshire Moors saw its final service. However, just two short years later, a plucky band of locals banded together to rescue thier historic railway heritage and in 1973, the route reopened. Today, it has become one of the most popular and beloved heritage lines amongst holidaymakers, enthusiasts and the occasional Hollywood blockbuster: the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Having officially celebrated thier 50th anniversary on 1st May, the railway expanded festivities with a four-day gala in September. No fewer than four visiting locomotives would grace Moors metals across the event. Topping the bill was LNER A4 60007 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’, which called the Moors home for twenty years and is still very much associated with the line. The A4 ran light from Crewe on Thursday before joining the gala on Friday. Following in her footsteps would be BR Standard 9F 92214, based on the line from 2009 to 2014 and once named ‘Cock O’ The North’. The final two guests would be first-time visitors: BR Standard 4MT 75069 (sister to the NYMR’s own 75029 ‘The Green Knight’) from the Severn Valley and Caledonian Railway McKintosh 439 55189 from the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway. The ‘Caley Tank’ would be showing off her recently-applied BR Lined Black livery and primarily ran in double-headed formations.
Despite the attraction of the visitors, many of the home fleet would also have turns in the spotlight. To celebrate its centenary, LNER Worsdell J27 65894 had just been transformed into LNER livery as 2392. She double-headed the reopening train in 1973 with Lambton Tank No.29, a special which was recreated on the Sunday of the gala. Single-chimney 9F 92134 paired up with 92214 for selected runs. BR Standard 4MT Tank 80136 masqueraded as scrapped classmate 80116, which worked the final service from Scarborough to Whitby and Middlesbrough in 1958. Diminutive Belgain Cockerill ‘Lucie’ ran shuttles with the Great Western saloon on Friday evening, making her debut on NYMR passenger services. Unfortunately, several stalwarts of the fleet sat the event out. NELPG’s LNER Raven Q6 0-8-0 63395 suffered a major cylinder failure in April and is now awaiting substantial repair. BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0 76079 was withdrawn with leaking boiler tubes over the summer and now requires overhaul. SR Maunsell S15 4-6-0 825 has also been stopped due to a crack in the tubeplate. Hopes were high that LMS Stanier 5MT 44806 would return to steam during the gala, but ultimately her overhaul wasn’t completed in time. Nevertheless, a total of twelve locomotives were out in force on a wide variety of workings.
I visited on the Friday and Saturday of the event, which saw southbound departures between 9:30 and 21:00 on both days. Bright skies had been forecast on the run-up to the gala, but in the end it was a mix of sunny spells and overcast gloom with a couple of downpours on Friday afternoon. This didn't detract from the festivities however and produced some spectacular performances from the engines. The full lineup consisted of:

I hope you all enjoy the video. Thanks to all locomotive owners, staff and volunteers for an excellent anniversary gala. Highlights for me include the Caledonian Tank on the Freight, double-headed 9Fs at Eller Beck, 'Lucie' on the shuttles and 92134's incredible ascent of the bank on Friday afternoon. Here's to fifty more years of supreme steam action in the North Yorkshire Moors. Feel free to comment and subscribe!

Hello, whilst looking at another channel I found that they had been using some clips from my videos and I stumbled across some of your clips on that channel too. I thought I'd just let you know.
Kind regards,
Thomas
Hi Thomas, that’s very interesting to hear. Would you be able to disclose the name of the channel so appropriate action can be taken? Thanks for the info, Cameron
@SecondValveSteam Yes of course, it's @NATURE186. If you go into the shorts section and scroll down you will find a couple of shots which look like they are from this video.
If I was told how to describe how steam engines make me feel I just show them this clip @ 5:48
@@Sonny_JC Thanks for commenting. There is something about the immense power on display that makes that a fantastic shot! Kind regards. Cameron
iya namanya pemandangan padi

Thanks for commenting Andrew. As I’ve been to the NYMR many times now, I tried out a few new spots on this occasion. Glad you liked the results! All the best.
A nice video Cameron from the Steam Gala :)
Thanks SimonTog. Happy you enjoyed the video.

It's always wonderful to see a streamlined A4 in working order. Sir Nigel really is a beauty!
Thanks for your comment Nic. The A4s certainly are striking machines. We’re very lucky that six were rescued. Kind regards. Cameron
😮
17:22 Interesting chassis right there, does it belong to an s15 or something?
Thanks for commenting. Yes, they are the frames of an S15, either 830 or 841, both of which were cannabalised in the restoration of 825. Hope this helps. Cameron
@@SecondValveSteam jeez, that’s grim, hopefully they will be restored in their own right
