Neat! Getting to see the track switching system in action was especially interesting. The English-language announcements reminded me of _Half-Life._ "This train is inbound from Level 3 Dormitories to Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities." :)
"Now arriving at Sector C Test Labs and Control Facilities." ... "Thank you and have a very safe and productive day." Those sentences, deeply engraved into my memory. What a game. :)
My first and only ride on a Maglev was at the Vancouver BC Expo 86. I believe it was a Sumitomo running on a 1/4 mile track. Thank you for capturing the pre-announcement tones. Many transit agencies take immense pride in their tones.
This reminded me of the Rinkai line that runs through the Odaiba waterfront area in Tokyo. This maglev train was a demonstration of an emerging technology in 2005. Maglev is now going mainstream with the construction of an amazingly fast Shinkansen between Tokyo (Shinagawa) and Nagoya, with plans to extend it to Osaka. This new maglev Shinkansen is capable of speeds over 600 kph so it will be a beast. Unfortunately it will not open until at least 2027.
I’ve been to China , Vietnam, Finland, Thailand, Paris, Russia and English signs and often English announcements were made. We English speakers are so lucky.
@@денисбаженов-щ1б I lived in China and took the train from Beijing to Moscow and went to St Petersburg. Russia is great 👍 I love the food. And the subway is amazing
Japan has one of the best transportation systems in the world. Though the maglev train was around since 1984 in Birmingham, England, this video is refreshing.
1934: Engineer Hermann Kemper from Nortrup (district of Osnabrück) Germany applies for a patent for the invention of a "suspension railroad with wheel-less vehicles, which is levitated along iron rails by means of magnetic fields": the prototype of the magnetic levitation railroad. But because of the Second World War, it was never built.
incredible these japanese people! there’re number one in the world as an avant-garde in the technology, transportation of super-fast trains, subway with maglev trains!!!! i adore the nation!
I always enjoy your videos. They allow the viewers to create their own experience without a lot of distracted voice narratives. I am hoping that you would put English captions on some of your video on the other channel. Thanks.
What a lovely relaxing video. Technology at its best. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, here in Greece we still need years to achieve this kind of transportation.
5:50 That's awesome! I visited the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka while I was stationed in Japan. It was wonderful. Of such experiments are advances made. I wonder what the power consumption of the Linimo train is compared to conventional trains.
I would love to try out a maglev train, to see how it compares to a 'normal' one...and not having to listen to people yapping away on their phone sounds wonderful!
I’ve been on the maglev in Shanghai which is high speed but goes a short distance which is disappointing . Going to Japan is high on my bucket list after we’re able to travel freely again
We used to have a Maglev at Birmingham Airport where I live closed in 90's as it didn't work well mechanically (still really a prototype) I have memories of going on a school trip to ride it, now reapalced with a cable drawn system. I hope to ride this system on my list to do at some point thank you for the video.
Were the hotel room rates in Nagoya and inflated and expensive due to the Expo? Were hotel rooms hard to come by? Osaka will host Expo 2025. I think the Japanese government are really relying on this event to enhance Japan’s standing in the world, as the delayed Tokyo Olympics were a financial white elephant. The expected economic and cultural impacts of the Olympics were nullified due to pandemic.
Excellent! I didn’t know maglev trains were already in operation. I thought the magnets required some kind of extreme cooling in order to best function, which in turn required enclosed tracks, and then some developers wants to create a vacuum for the train to travel through (at least for the bullet-train version), so it’s wonderful to see one in operation, with elevated platforms, with very little fuss! Thank you for uploading.
China has a couple of maglev's in operation. They have at least one metro line and one express line between Shanghai airport and downtown that can go 430 kph! 😲 I know the companies working on the hyperloop design are making use of maglev technology to move the trains through the tubes.
LINIMO doesn't use superconducting magnets, so no cooling system is required. This also limits the power of the magnets, meaning that it can't carry very much weight. In addition, the powered electromagnets are in the vehicle so it still gets electricity from metal rails on the side. It's not a fully-levitated system.
Thank you for this video. I was already booked to visit Nagoya this month but of course the current crisis has not lifted yet. I was planning to visit the EXPO park and the Toyota Museum along this line.
I lived for 2 yrs between Hanamizuki Dori and Fujigaoka stations on this line. I probably took the train about 3 times in those 2 yrs. Its slow as hell, expensive, and not convenient. Very much a show horse for the Aichi World Expo 2005; since then no one uses it as its so impractical and everyone drives in Nagoya.
thnx for another interesting adventure - am in 🇨🇦 - our buses and trains have never been as good as yours 🙄 but when I travelled regularly (1975 - 1992) I used both bus and train and was ‘satisfied’ with both - flew occasionally (our London - Toronto - Montreal) between 1992 - 2016 and again would say I was ‘satisfied’ - we no longer have a bus system and the train network is falling apart - for those of us who don’t drive and live in a very BIG country - things are very discouraging and our travels are very limited 😳🥴
It is a good video. The other maglev train is the high speed, approx 600 km/hr bullet train. The project is already underway building the first stage between Tokyo and Nagoya.

In Vancouver is the Skytrain using some of the same technology, being the linear induction motor propulsion but with steel steerable wheel that handle corners considerable quicker with only moderate noise. The switching seems to be an expensive proposition on this system much like monorails. Never the less pretty cool and the closest to the HSST ride I had at expo 86 in Vancouver on the 0.6 km track. 30 min cool down between runs.
For my transportation system, we have 8 light rail lines (2 of them don’t run due to driver shortages, low ridership, and COVID-19 Pandemic), 4 commuter rail lines, and a Bus Rapid Transit with 7 Routes (only 3 routes run as of now). I live in Denver Colorado. 4 future expansions are coming soon (1 is in the works, the other 3 are unfunded). The name is RTD.

Because it still is a motor.... A "Lineair induction motor" to be preciese. Picture a normal electric motor; it generates a magnetic field between the Stator (the part that's around the center axle) and the Rotor (the center axle), and the Rotor starts rotating (to which you then couple for example the wheels of the vehicle). A lineair induction motor does the same. Only, the Stator is cut open and rolled out.... all along the track. The Rotor.... Is now the train. As the Stator is now rolled out along the track, the magnetic field it creates doesn't rotate a part on the train; it pushes the train foreward; The train is pretty much riding electromagnetic waves like a surfboard on the ocean. But other than the different direction of the magnetic waves (lineair, not rotational).... the principle is just the same as any normal electric motor.
