    I rode the Fastest Maglev Train on the Planet or should I say, the world's fastest train ever built and I reserved it for the day all to myself. I contacted the maker of the fastest train in the world, JR Central, and asked them if I can reserve their maglev train for an entire day. And they said, Yes. Filmed in June of 2022, I’m the first RUclips content creator to ever get full access to this Yamanashi Maglev Train testing facility. I'm going to go inside and give a full maglev train tour. JR Central's research started in 1962 and they’ve been developing the Maglev Technology ever since, ultimately building what we’re going to ride today, the Linear Chuo Shinkansen Train…The fastest train on the planet running initially from Tokyo to Nagoya and then to Osaka, officially opening after 2027. It's in the Guinness World Records as the fastest magnetically levitated (magelev) train at the speed of 603 km/h (374.69MPH). The train’s normally operating speed is about 500km/h (311mph). Which means it cuts down the current Tokyo to Osaka 2.5 hour Shinkansen ride down to only 67 minutes. For people in the States, Washington DC to New York in just one hour! Fun little fact, this superconducting maglev train operates without a driver physically seated in the train’s cockpit, instead, you’ll only find cameras there. It’s all fully automated.

      OK. You guys don't know Japan and its bureaucracy. It *is* a pretty big deal to be getting this permission (although it's nowhere as hard as ten years ago when you basically had to be NHK to do this). Yes, it's free publicity, but that hasn't stopped a mid level bureaucrat from stopping it. So Paolo, congrats and thank you for a really seamless video (as always).

      It's part of JR Tokai's strategy to get positive public support. They're having issues with getting construction approval from Shizuoka Prefecture due to concerns that the tunnels will affect ground water sources. • @ChrisP978
      @ChrisP978 Год назад +38

      They're basically digging a tunnel from Tokyo to Osaka (500km) for an estimated total cost of $64B (including 3 new high tech stations). They will certainly be selling the technology to other countries to recoup some of their decades of research. It will also be a fairly expensive trip, probably double that of discount airlines but certainly more convenient when you consider how much time you waste in airports.

    • @AcridWhistle
      @AcridWhistle Год назад +3

      @@ChrisP978 It is likely to be well more than the budget airlines. RIght now there are options for Tokyo to Osaka from $65 to $84 USD, $110 if you want to go via JAL, round trip. A shinkansen ticket is a bit under $100...one way.
      Of course, you would need to take the train to the airport (so in the $65 example it would add $27 (Shinjuku station)).
      Although as you mentioned a much comfier, roomier, and convenient experience with less security.
      Although this distance should be near the upper limit of where high speed rail is winning, but it kind of isn't. It would shave about an hour each way (assuming 30 minutes checkin / security) to go via airline. The SC maglev would probably win...but the price.
      It gets even worse if you figure somewhere like Tokyo to Kyushu, $103 USD round trip (yes, very cheap for some reason). and 1hr 40 min travel time, vs $200 USD one way ($400 round trip) and 7-hour travel time.
      A JR pass can be expensive but it makes a tourist numb to the actual costs of the shinkansen and even the subway / buses to a degree in Japan.

    If you ride the antiquated Amtrak between Washington, D.C. and NYC, there's no comparison with the maglev. Can't believe Japan is so far ahead and that the technology hasn't been brought to the US yet!

    • @NeoKingArthur
      @NeoKingArthur Год назад +13

      I think the US is going to be a little difficult bringing this type of transportation. There's going to be massive lobbying against it from corporations that makes a living from selling road cars, and airline tickets, or even those intercity bus operators. Because automated maglev trains like these will disrupt the way people travel, it's difficult to justify it because everyone else's livelihood will be at stake.
      It's different from Japanese and basically Asian cultures where they put so much focus on social and community-based economy. Where there are more investment on public transportation like these over individual road car ownership. The more innovative they are when it comes to something that will benefit the general public as a whole, the more attractive the investment. Compared to the US capitalistic economy where they're focus on individual ownership and any innovation that benefits singular persons that will attract the most investments.

      @@nish221100 Yes, they’re concerned that loss of ground water would severely impact the agricultural output of the prefecture. It’s so strange, though: Why did the prefectural governor previously hint that he would like the Nozomi-for those unfamiliar, this is the fastest, reduced stop service running on the Tokaido line-to stop in the prefecture (currently skips over all six stations) as compensation? How on earth would that help with the ground water situation? It’s almost as if… as if the governor doesn’t _actually_ believe the ground water issue to be that serious and is simply using it as an excuse to shake down JR Tokai with the knowledge that there’s no way that they’ll reroute the 10km segment through Shizuoka to a roundabout path that is much, much longer.
      Nah, that can’t be it.

    These trains are amazing some of them are even straight capable of running on electric rather than fuel, most are a hybrid. Considering the speeds it would be nice to adapt the technology. Second the armrest divider is something every place needs and maybe soon a foot room divider too so people keep their feet where they need to be. Also the bathroom is bigger than the one in my apartment. Overall very impressive.
    You could take a drink, get up go to the bathroom and come back and bam. You're already there in 10 minutes rather than an hour long commute.
