I remember this couple from Vet on the Hill and were so afraid to have their dogs spayed and neutered. I am so happy with the outcome. Thank you Dr. Scott for helping Betty. I bet your Betty was there holding her paw 🐾 and making sure she came out the other side ❤️🐕❤️

I like that you admit how deep the bond was with your Betty. I understand completely. I have never been able to stop being sad after I lost my dog, a Boston Terrier , that was THE special dog of my life and I am 71 and have had many dogs over the years, but my Boston was the star in the pack. I couldn't keep his pictures that I had in frames around my house for a long while. Now it has been well over 15 yrs, I finally am able to put them back up and not cry every time I look at them. I love a vet who loves his own animals in the way you have expressed, that tells me I have a special Vet! Recently a family pet, an English Bulldog that we rescued three years ago, suddenly had a growth on his jowel. Before we could even get an appointment scheduled, it broke open and we had a blood bath in our utility room where his food dish is, he must have caught it while eating and broke it open. He was rushed into the Vet and it was removed but the pathology report was not just daunting, it was AWFUL in that the type of cancer was the worst kind, no treatment options available and we were told it would grow back and quite possibly we would see another growth in his lymph glands in the neck. We knew what was coming so we took him home and spoiled him as much as we could, took lots of family pictures and did all the things with him that he liked to do like car rides just for the sake of taking him out. Six weeks went by and the dreaded lump in the lymph glands in his neck had a golf ball size lump and we knew what was coming. We did not wait until he refused food or until he lost the ability to enjoy daily life, instead we decided to give him the love he deserved by having him euthanized before all the negative things happened. It was just awful, we were blessed that our vet and his assistant already had a great bond with him as we had been taking him there often as he came to us with chronic ear problems . So he had no idea that he was not coming home , he had no fear, he played with the vet and the assistant as he always did and we were there at his side when the sedative was given, and also when the euthanasia shot was given. He never knew a thing and that helped us somewhat that he not only did not suffer at home but went quietly to sleep on the sedative and on to doggie heaven. We still take our other dogs to the same vet and its hard to be in the same offices but we manage. He was given to us by a rescue that knew my brother had always wanted an English Bulldog and my brother was himself going through cancer treatment for a tumor in his neck and when Otto the Bulldog came into our lives he bonded with my brother right away and on the bad days he gave comfort to my brother. My brother beat his cancer and it was only shortly thereafter that Otto was found to also have cancer. So, my brother gave Otto the same love and comfort till the end. WE miss this dog very much.

Thank you for being brave enough, and clear-sighted enough, to give your beloved friend that last act of kindness BEFORE he went through the miseries of advancing cancer side effects. Cancer treatments are harsh, painful and debilitating. A human patient can reason that it MAY be worth going through all that for a positive future end result. No way can we communicate that to a dog (or cat, horse ..) who live in the moment, without a concept of 'future'. 🦮

The story of your beloved bulldog got me thinking of how I said goodbye to my heart and soul dog, my beloved tiny black toy poodle named Phoebe.
She was 14 and ten months. Although it wasn't cancer, the last two and a half months were hard for both of us. I asked her to tell me when she was ready, though it was a constant struggle to know what was best for her, if what I was doing for her was right for her, but the night before her time she clearly looked straight into my eyes with such pure love and trust telling me that she was ready to go. Almost every night and day I was able to stay right beside her for the last two and a half months of her life, but that night was the most quiet, calm, and filled with love that I have never felt in my entire life. She was sleeping in her favorite bed, without pain and comfortable, and we held our hand and paw together until the sun came up.
Although we humans could probably never be sure to know if it was the right decision for her or not, in my heart I felt it was time she chose to let me know she was ready.
Losing our beloved pets is never easy and always devastating to us, but those precious moments we could, fortunately, share with our hearts and souls pets are forever treasures in our lives for sure.
Thank you for sharing your story. I was not able to be brave like you, but I have no regrets about my decision to let her go on that morning.
I can't wait to see my baby again when my time comes.

@@naomitakimoto7295 So sorry for your loss. We have a kinship all of us who love our dogs. I cannot believe how special animals are, the ones I have been blessed with made a huge difference in my ability to cope with life; a dog's unconditional love is a gift from God to help us enjoy life when we are lonely, sick, worried, sad....any number of things that surely would be more difficult to get through without our dear pets! even though I am soon to be 72, I still have one 14 yr old rescue and when he goes to doggie heaven I will get another. I have always written my wishes about my animals in case of my early death or now what I want when I go. I have younger family members who have assured me they will take whatever dog I may still have when I leave to go home. Some people say it is not "fair" for me at my age to take in a puppy or young dog, but as long as I know IN ADVANCE that they will be taken in by family, I can be unapologetic about giving a pup or a senior dog a home and love.

Well, I have to be honest! I avoided watching this one for two days, because I lost my Callie, after she had a tumor on her back leg! She was eighteen years old, and had the tumor removed once, and it was so tramatic for us, because the stitches didn't hold, and she had an open wound that had to heal shut, and I just bawled! I used honey on it, and it started doing really well, and finally closed! But then, her kidneys started to go! She didn't want to eat! I fed her baby food with a shringe, and she was doing well, but then the tumor came back! She didn't live very long after, and we were all by her side, when she left this world! It has been six months, and I think about her all of the time as well! So sorry about Betty, Scott! I know exactly how you feel! :) Hugs!

She lost conciseness on the way to the vet and passed shortly after. While she was losing her mind she was in my arms in the back seat of my mother’s car! Her name was Bella and she was a german shepherd border collie mix but 100% adorable and loving!

That was the hardest and most emotional to watch of all the videos so far 😢 I remember Royston and Laura from a vet on the hill video when they had one of their pugs treated for pyometra. It was very evident how much their dogs mean to them and how much faith and trust they rightly have in you as a vet. It was clear to see you were putting your heart and soul into the surgery for Betty and doing everything you could to ensure the best possible outcome for them and enable them to continue having a lovely life with each other. It was completely understandable how bitter sweet this must’ve been for you in remembering your own beloved Betty and how much you wish she was still here with you 💔💓 You are an incredible vet and person and do such amazing work 👏🏻 and I so wish I lived closer to your surgery so I could have you as the vet for my dog as I would be certain then that he’d get the best possible treatment from someone that really has his best interests at heart ❤

I know it’s incredibly difficult.. I lost my very dear pet to old age when I was living in Japan, I had him his whole life and he got cancer on his liver and there was nothing more we could do. His heart was so strong but the liver couldn’t be fixed. If you are still looking for solace, this might sound strange, but there are Buddhist mantras that are spoken to help calm and guide the spirit of departed pets on their journey through the afterlife. Different buddhas (you can think of them as angels if you like) are ready at all times to give compassionate love and guide our loved ones after they have left us. So even if you don’t really believe in it, you can say this gentle prayer for your dog and maybe it will bring comfort because many people DO believe in it, and their faith will support you even from far away. “Om ami dewa hri” brings the light, and blessings of the Buddha named “Amida”, to your pet’s spirit. So they say.

I understand how you feel. We lost a dog who was aged 12 to Cushing Disease while staying overnight at the vet’s. We got another Maltese/Shih Tzu X who died under the exact same circumstances at aged 12. My Dad then got a Shih Tzu puppy but Dad passed away when she was 13 months old. She became mine and when she reached 12 I was so scared that history would repeat itself again. I was so glad when she got to 13, then 14. I finally had to euthanise her a few weeks before her 17th birthday after she had a stroke. That was on 21 Feb 2020 and I miss her so much. I wish you all the best with your fur baby and hope he lives a long and good life. 💔🐾🇳🇿

If your shih tzu is 9, and healthy, he can live many more years. My mom’s dog, who was her shadow at home, passed at 16. The two remaining ,one closer to 17th birthday, and the last one, with pus on one mammary gland at 14, survived for two more years. The vet had suggested not to go through surgery to remove the breast, at her age. And because it was pus, he used local anaesthetic on that breast and removed as much pus as possible, then used an injected antibiotic. She was prescribed oral and topical antibiotic. But it kept recurring.

That was a big challenge for you and the team. Epic surgical work and extending her life with the removal of that life altering form of cancer was a gift for Betty and her family.
Never feel that you are alone in your feelings of deep loss over your own special little soul that has passed away. I still cry over my sweet Savannah Bengal Cat who died at 9 yrs after a severe stroke in 2016. She was gone in 30 mins and it was so unexpected. I too think of her every single day. She was my joy, my little shadow and best friend too! 😢❤ That was more painful than going thru my divorce. ❤

    I'm sorry for your lost
It's never easy losing a pet, especially one that was your whole world
But I know Betty is proud of you for the number of lives you save every day, and I bet she gave Betty more time for that family
Betty will always be by your side until you two meet again

The dog Betty in this video strongly resembles my new girl, Ashley. I adopted her 2 days ago. I fostered puppies for 9 years, and she was one of 2 'failures.' The resemblance is so strong that I decided to mention it.

I lost my precious GSD, Ziva three years ago and I still grieve for her every single day. Dr. Scott explained perfectly the way I feel. Never, ever before have I felt the degree of sadness that I felt when she died. She was my girl and losing her was the most gut-wrenching sorrow.that I’ve ever gone thru. I’m so very sorry for the loss of your sweet Betty, Dr. Scott.

To have that learned skill of being a vet, and the natural love for animals and your friends, is a huge gift, a wonderful combination which gives you the joy of returning animals to their owners, ready to rumble again after illness and trauma, so that they spread the love again in their families at home. Even with its attendant painful times, your job is a great gift. Thank you for doing it with such love.

Dr. Scott, I admire your dedication as a great veterinarian. Your caring demeanor towards your patients and to the owners. If I lived in your area, I'd want you to be my vet, for my kitty, Bing! I live in the US and also have a caring vet for my kitty. I worry about veterinarians these days with all the pressures of the job. They say that the suicide rate in veterinarians is very high. Mental health is very important in your field. Taking days off to do something fun with the family does help with this. The fact that you have changed your routine to the new channel of Rescue Vet is good. As the old saying goes, “Change is good!” I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog, Betty. If only a beloved pet could live as long as our lifetime. I lost my dear kitty 2 years ago, Dusty Blue. He had kidney failure, and on the way to the Animal ER, he died in my arms. He was 16 years old. I miss him every day!!! My other cat, Bing, misses him, too!

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who has trouble getting over my dog’s passing. Jake was a golden and he was my 🩷dog. I had such a bond with him and when cancer took him I was devastated. Even though I got two more dogs two months after he died I just could not get over it. That was almost ten years ago and I still miss him. Now I have two almost ten year old dogs and I hope their lives don’t end like that.

Watching you made me happy and sad at the same time. It is just so amazing that the person you are genuinely loves animals. I wish that i could find a vet like you. I live in Louisville, Kentucky (USA), and i have been a couple of different clinics here, and none show that kindness. My heart dog was bleeding from her bottom. i called my vet and told them i was 5 min away, their 1st response was they close in 15 min, i would have pay the overtime pay for the technician if i came there or just go ahead and take her to the emergency vet clinic. Those are the types of vets we have here, only a business, not for the love of animals.😢 I am sorry you lost your heart, Betty. Just remember she is watching over you and will meet again someday.❤❤
