this is one of the best jackets I've ever owned, spent 10 years in Commando Forces so I know about being cold and wet!! if you're after an excellent jacket then get a Montane Extreme jacket or smock
Excellent review/showcase. One of the best bits of kit I have ever owned. Super hard use over 3 years and still in great condition. The only issue I have had is that in torrential rain when used with a base layer (and sometimes without) it can soak your lower half. The warm solution is to have a similar system for your legs, alternatively try not tucking your base layer into your shell trousers and ensure the waistline of your shell trousers sits above your other garments. The jacket version is great because you can unzip easily to cool of quickly and thence go bare chested in to the wilds. There’s something primal about that, but it’s probably not safe for Sainsbury’s.
i had the smock version and it remains my favourite jacket over all the fancy Patagucci down jackets. Great review. Will be getting the jacket version as i think its a little more versatile. Montane are a British company to.
I have to give you a 👍. I’ve seen a few of your reviews, but I’ve not seen you so enthused. It’s 24/11/18 I’m of to see if I can track one of these down🧐. Many thanks
very interesting... a more modern version of the buffalo jkt. Ice climbing in NZ and alpine routes in Chamonix, I have used a Mtn Equipment jkt which is like the Rab vapourise alpine jkt (hooded) . and a down jkt as a belay jacket. combo works well, you can also use a lightweight pertex/pile for mnt biking, hiking in cold or snowy conditions. The jacket you show could indeed replace many layers.... And help people who cant afford a 500$ goretex jkt... which is going to make you sweat too much on aerobic ice climbing ....
How did you find when you were static in the cold and wet i find i am struggling with cold i have the Buffalo jacket special 6 and the softe sungpak nope that dont help either whilst staying still eg long belays around camp
If you used this for climbing mountains (white mountains of New Hampshire winter) with steep elevation gain (anywhere from 500-1000ft per mile) with temperatures ranging from -20 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit do you think this would be warm enough? I would like to have excellent breathability. Ideally no more than two layers below. Wind up to 40-50 mph.
identical materials to the buffalo so you can layer them up if you are in really cold conditions, or are going to be stood around. I'm currently look at getting one to double up with my buffalo mountain shirt as montane are a bit cheaper than the buffalo jackets

Brilliant review and I’ve pretty much decided to go for one of these. The smock version though, ace kit. 👍
What's this jacket like in heavy rain for let's say 5 hours of consistent rain would it keep you worm ??
I prefer the hood of the smock. It covers much higher.

Yes plenty warm.
Thank you!
Anyone have feedback on the sizing for these? I usually take a size that says 42-44", but for this jacket L is 42" and XL is 44".
Good for Kilimanjaro summit?
TheSlangers My question too!
Which base layer did you have on
Jacket or smock?
Planning on getting this unless the buffalo shirt comes back in stock, so if you are reading this buffalo, send some stock out.
NIce, thanks !
Is this jacket still available as I couldn’t find it on your site?
Montane are definitely still making it.
I found it on amazon
Do you wear two, like with the buffalo system?
