This is one of my FAVORITE ways of doing transitions. Get creative with your base footage. This is a great effect you can throw into a panning transition.

Yes, it's the essential graphics panel that you need to activate.
For the second example you can use track matte it is better amd you can work on alpha and luma (black and whites)
