Hello! Greetings from Argentina, You are the 1st British person I can understand :). Finnish are amazingly warm, Most people from other parts of the world tend to think that the rough climate make cold and distant people but I must say that my Finnish friends from Helsinki, Turku and Jyväskylä are warm and polite, so I am glad to have found you and your channel. Kiitos!
Thank you so much :-) Finns just warm up a bit slower than some other nationalities, but it´s definitely worth waiting for. Greetings back to sunny Argentina :-)
That is true that we don't have a word for "please" in Finland but we use words "could" or "would" when we wan't to be polite. So saying "Could you give me some sugar" is polite question, but if you say "Give me some sugar" it's like telling someone what to do. If you know what I mean :D
I live in Finland, and if someone visits our home, they are asked if they want tea or coffee. I, myself, am a teadrinker, and in our family the children usually drink tea at breakfast, snacktime and at evening, and are not allowed to drink coffee before they're older- we don't want them to stay up too late and lose sleep.
@thensome it was really amazing info you shared and specially you have mentioned everything bw finns and brits thats really cool, the best thing in the video i liked is your body language which is perfect with the topic:) stay blessed and keep making videos for Finland.Peace out
Yes Personal Space is a big thing here and do respect that thing a lot when it comes to people not usual to finnish and the other Nordic countries! Also: one thing about the tea drinking here in Finland, there's nothing wrong and bad about drinking tea and coffee but in general finnish people love coffee. -I'm one of those people who would never drink coffe and am a tea-drinker. You just say you don't want coffee if you don't want coffee in Finland. No big deal, it is pretty usual to drink tea in Finland.
Very true - things are definitely getting mixed up in both countries, as more and more Brits prefer coffee and more and more Finns prefer tea. I was simplifying things according to how it´s has been traditionally. Can´t stand coffee myself though - I always feel a bit awkward about asking for tea at someone´s house in Finland ;-)
Well, i didn't mean to be super serious, like there isn't anything wrong about what you said. :) Probably me just being a bit up in the heat while commenting. And your vid was great :)
Like the video. I'm English, and being insincere is an English way of life, glad you pointed to it. Best of luck young fellow (sincerely) Peace be unto you.
I have an idea about the issue you mentioned on the video that homes are are tidier in Finland than UK. That is that people here in Finland spent more time indoors especially during winter time so it is quite essential to keep your house in order. On the other hand in UK I think people spend more time outdoors so it is does not feel so important to have everything order at home. And that has grown into cultural thing during the time I guess in both countries.
That´s a very good point indeed. Probably also helps that Finnish homes are slightly larger than British homes, on average. Larger homes are easier to clean, and smaller homes encourage their residents to spend time elsewhere :-)
Helsinki - The Capital of The World - The Flats are smaller / Thanks to The location / location / location ! At The Country a House Would cost - as a Flat in Helsinki ! 30m2
As a British Canadian who was married to a Finnish Canadian, I can attest that much of this is true, with a couple of major omissions....Finns drink a LOT more than the British, and while not publicly demonstrative of their emotions, they are rather more highly sexed than the Brits. Some of them (including my late husband) exude a weird, animalistic sexuality that I personally rather liked.
As a Finn I am quite fluent in English language and culture but I never know how often I should repeat the word "please". Someone should make a video about it. I'll subscribe now, thanks for the fun videos.
Thank you so much :-) Personally I got into trouble when I forgot to use my pleases at the pub - It´s all very complicated, no wonder everyone buys their alcohol at Tesco instead ;-)
I was in Toronto once. Spent quite some time at the bar counter and always making my orders with a "please". One time I then said "could I have a glass of wine, please... oh, and a glass of water". They said "you forgot to say please". To this day I don't know if they were joking or not.
Finland does have pre-school at maybe age 4 or 5 or so though. It sounded like it was quite spot on video. Something that bothered me from the start: despite you having like a perfect english accent and none of the usual traits of finns speaking english, it still made me think "this is a finn speaking perfect english in a pretty heavy accent" and it's so confusing because I can't explain why. It just felt like it made sense after you said you're half and half.
When was that? ;-) No, but seriously that was some accomplishment, makes up for all the other years :-) I´ll hopefully work it into a future video at some point :-)
American English is having an influence on British English lately.many Brits are using Americanism such as dating someone, hiring someone or watching movies.
"Pyydän" is Please in Finnish. It is in dictionary books or it was earlier, my dictionary book is 10 years old. Maybe modern Finnish language does not have this word "Pyydän" anymore or i am too old.
SilliKalaKultaTonni sun nimen perusteella oot suomalaine nii voin varmaa kirjottaa suomeks, jos et oo suomsalainen/et osaa suomea (joka on hyvin epätodennäköstä) nii kirjotan tän iha turhaan koska google translate on iha avuton Suomen suhteen jos ton voi ees kirjottaa noin. Miks mä vieläki kirjotan mun pitäs olla jo nukkumassa, tai oikeestaan mun pitäs tehä läksyt ja sit mennä nukkuun mut kuka välittää. Jos sä luet tätä vielä 1. Öö miks 2. Hanki elämä (vois itekki) 3. No heippa.
Not as such, no. There is not a specific word equivalent to please, but there are ways of phrasing how you ask for something, which are more polite :-)

Very true, I love Scotland and the Scots, and along with the Danes, I think they do indeed fall somewhere in the middle between Finns and the English. My own experience of living in the UK has always been down south, so I have encountered the more polar opposites of the spectrum ;-)

"about it" meant that imagine when you are in a pub. "A glass of wine please. And some water please." I got laughed at for over using that word :)
Thank you so much :-) Personally I got into trouble when I forgot to use my pleases at the pub - It´s all very complicated, no wonder everyone buys their alcohol at Tesco instead ;-)

American English is having an influence on British English lately.many Brits are using Americanism such as dating someone, hiring someone or watching movies.
What’s the British or England-English version of saying “dating someone”? Is it “seeing someone/romantically seeing/talking to someone”?
I didn't know that näätä is a bad word
It's not --- it's a name for animal /martes martes/. Doesn't mean it can't be used as an insult or a swear though... technically any word could be.
The N-word is the worst of them all :-p
Pölynimuri, Mopoauto, Äyskäri, Peruna, Vaahtosammutin.. Siinnä parit, mitä en itsekkään tiennyt ;)
Äyskäri on kyllä aika paha.
Ilman sitä voi käydä huonosti vesillä. Koko lista tais olla ihan vaan hupijuttu...

British-Finn or Finnish-Brit, nothing special. I'm practically inbred Finn and still unsocial arrogant drunk with bad teeth.
when saying inbred finn, so you have to be from savo
When you mentioned 'British', you forgot about Scots. I have admit that Finns and the Scots are eerily similar in some ways. A lot more in common than w/ English, no offense...

Your facial hair look like it's some brush bristle sticked to your face with PVA glue. Weird.
I know, thankfully I am one of the few guys who can rock the bristle-brush-stuck-to-the-face - look. Not many can ;-)
You're getting bald....
Didn´t anyone tell you? Going bald is all the rage these days ;-)
