My favorite find was a white linen button down and a button down embroidered eyelet top that I refashioned. I look for silk, cotton and linen or blends of those when I thrift. 👍❤️

Several years ago there was a little thrift store on my street, across from a seniors residence. If the senior passed away the family would pack up all the cool old sewing things, even ancient patterns, and donate them to the shop. Sadly it is gone now. When it was there, I wasn't into sewing so I didn't know to load up on those items. Could kick myself now.

I feel your pain, i sure feel your pain.. /virtual hug. it's ok, it's ok..
A thrift store with decently nice stuff closed last year due to the situation. but i remember seeing a cast iron pot in there. i didn't buy it.. i'm only half sorry i didnt - it was oval and i don't think i could have used it too well - i have no oval lids, nor did it come with one. It also needed some love to be restored. i forgot if it was enameled or not, i think it wasn't. I'm used to enameled or stainless steel pots.

Re: Cedar moth balls... If they don't smell, give them a bit of a sanding to loosen the wood fibers and let the smell out. And repeat if the smell seems to lessen after a time. Don't have sandpaper? Use an emery board, fingernail file, or even a pumas stone. ❤🌅🌅😷

My favorite find is large cotton shirts. I cut off all the seams and use the flat parts for quilts. There's a LOT of good fabric for very little cost. Plaid flannel shirts go to flannel plaid quilts... of course. I have big bins of 21 general colors basicly "free", enough to make big quilts for everyone I know and a hundred small cage quilts for the shelters. No reason those little ones can 't be pretty too. No reds in those...scares the staff. One big pieced block does it. They can be a bit bigger than the cage floor for cushy. Foundling blanket for stuffing or backing. Washable.

I gasped out loud too! But I had to do it quietly since my family is still sleeping. hahah BTW what would you do with it? I have some similar fabric. Although I can really see a 20's dress with it, I don't like wearing that style.

two comments. I'd say the flat woven trim you love so much is more 60s. Reason, I graduated high school in 1970 and those are like the trims my mother used on my dresses when I was in school. #2. those first three doilies are actually antimacassars. The big one went over the back of the chair and the smaller ones on the arms, because you can wash them when you can't wash a chair! LOL I have several sets that my mother made but none like those baskets. Those are neat!

    • @BliffleSplick

Context: "Due to the tendency for the Macassar oil to transfer from the user's hair to the back of his chair, the antimacassar was developed. This is a small cloth (crocheted, embroidered or mass-produced), placed over the back of a chair to protect the upholstery." ~wikipedia

RED SKIRT: I bought a skirt from a charity shop that was too big for me. I laundered it, ironed it, took it apart with a seam ripper, and from a skirt pattern which did fit I made a fresh skirt from the old one. Easy project if you are slow and careful and take your time. I also reused the waistband. It can be done.
    Love the vintage patterns.

Wow you sure scored but this doesn't happen every time you go to the 0pshops. I have several of the Simplicity books and love them. if I come away with 2 pieces to refashion or just ready to wear It makes my day. I scored a big plain linen table cloth just doesn't feel right to cut it up and I find lots of dollies as people these days don't value them, any with holes I put away to be used for collars and pockets, I just love them, there is so much work that goes into them, makes me a little sad to think families just throw them away. Great video as usual looking forward to your repairs and remakes. Cheers have a great day Tricia.

That was an amazing haul. There are so many interesting items. We no longer have any fabric stores where l live. There used to be so many. I bought several yards of white organza with appliques of white satin roses when my daughter was 12. When she was 21 l turned it into her wedding gown. We still have it. She is in her 40s now. My favorite of your haul is the collar. I love, love, love it. I see it on a red background. It would just pop.

We have a huge Goodwill in the next town over. It is so organized you would not know it was a thrift store. The first place I stop when I go inside is the crafting area. They have tons of patterns for $1 and lots of notions and fabrics. I don't knit or crochet but if I did.......One time they had several bags of notions, with a lot of reds. It just so happened mom had bought/sent me 10 vintage red buckles. I ended up buying 6-7? bags full of buttons, ric-rac, trims(mostly reds). When I got home I matched up my all my red buckles and buttons, and trims. There are actually about 7 different shades of red in my groups. I am so spoiled with my Goodwill that when I go to other thrift stores I think, "Where is all the sewing stuff?"

If you haven't all ready: how/where do you store your stash? Do you sort by fabric type or color or...? Do you sort bits of fabric by size? How do you remember what you have?

    • @katehenry2718
      @katehenry2718 3 года назад +2

Who said you have to "finish" anything???? Call it a technique sample. If you don't like it anymore, cut it up for quilt bits. If you don't quilt, donate those to the local guild. I sort just by color in clear bins. If I need a bit of yellow I know just where to go. I pour them out and choose. I'm not making competition quilts with perfect cloth or perfect stitching, but they are DONE and warm and wonderful. Just play. )))

I've been thinking about making some tap pants lately and I immediately thought that black scalloped lace would be gorgeous on the legs of something like that. Maybe as insertion lace? 🤔 If you lined them in a color you could even go dressy shorts? Like a 40s play suit kind of thing? Of course a gown would be gorgeous with it too but if you don't have much of it might be harder to do.

I think also, there’s very little plus size clothing made in linen, and of course, far less variety in plus sizes generally. Which means I usually have to buy my linen- but white linen that is neither heavy nor see through is very expensive!

    My favorite thrift finds:
    - A book from the 60s on pattern drafting. Everything is illustrated and in color, so it is a very visually appealing book.
    - Just a big ol' bag of zippers. Not even halfway through that supply and good chunk of them hadn't even been used!
    - fabric. My only other options for shopping in town are WalMart and a quilting shop ran by a very unpleasant woman, so any fabric I find is a treasure!
    - my iron. Its a really good quality iron, it just needed to be descaled and cleaned. Spent a good few hours doing that but it was worth it!
    - sweaters. I also knit, so any sweater I can salvage the yarn from is great to find.

After watching this video, I decided to give thrifting a try. Here in Austin, Texas, we have a teachers' and crafters' thrift store called Austin Creative Reuse. It is now my favorite store! They had unused patterns for 50 cents each, and also carried some vintage patterns for a bit more. There were so many, many things for sewing including fabrics, threads, trims, zippers, bias tape, machine feet ... I could go on and on! Thank you for your encouragement to give thrifting a try - I will definitely do this again!

Oh and I would use those two smaller basket doilies as an upside down sleeve detail and the big one as an inset on the bottom of a dress. You can chart the crochet pattern off the doilies if you wanted to creat more. Takes time to count each stitch and produce a graph, but would be so worth it.

The spotty bits would be slub fabric.
Things I thrift for is oversized silk shirts, vintage embroidered table cloths, plus size natural fiber sweaters that I can either steek or unravel to reknit, and leather jackets. I've made many gloves, thimbles, slippers, and purses from old leather coats or even a leather couch. Sometimes you can find one that's in bad shape on the seats but the back of it is pristine. Many projects from it. Twice now, at a Goodwill, I've been able to utilize the parking lot to take the chair apart and toss the frame in the trash and leave with only the leather.

The navy lace is my favorite. I have the same Simplicity book. I haven't found many goodies lately. However my recent treasure is a 1951 edition of the Singer sewing book put together by Mary Brooks Picken. Always love seeing your thrift hauls.

I live in a small city in WV and our 2 thrift shops have no such sewing section. But that doesn't mean there is nothing useful for sewing to spend money on lol just no regular stocked section of sewing things. We do have a wholesale thrift shop though where you can buy the clothing and items by the weight for really cheap. An entire shopping cart stuffed full is only 40 bucks. And I regularly find rolls of fabric there aside from all the great fabric zips and embellishments on the clothing. Second hand is awesome!

I have some in my closet and i wont dare put them out but love to look at them occasionally. I also love lace, i have a few sacks of lace and i jave used it on my doll dresses when i make them. Thanks so much for sharing.

I'm not sure how much of the black lace you have but when you held it up I immediately saw an overskirt. A straight underskirt and then a full lace overskirt with a sparkling belt. It would be beautiful.

I would like to see the skirts from sewing school. I am hoping to take a few classes this coming up year (2022), yours are at the top of my list. Cinnamon at Pixie Faire is another list topper. I sew doll clothes for 18 inch dolls, but haven’t sewed for myself in years! I have been blessed with a three year old great granddaughter And a three year old great grandson. I want to sew for the children. We are expecting another bundle in June. Don’t know the sex yet, either is great by us. You absolutely con’t find ready made maternity clothes! Looking forward to sewing with you in the up coming year.

Honey, I actually had that book IN THE SEVENTIES! Now I am in MY seventies and I love vintage clothing, 1930s, 40s, fifty’s, and even sixties My favorite is the forty’s because they are shorter, I am five foot two, so shorter is better for me. I even love the furniture. Your complexion is so beautiful as are your smile and hands.you do vintage so well. Did you mention a class? Please elaborate.

I so, so love your thrift haul videos!!!!! And you did not disappoint - I definitely am hoping you’ll refit the red linen skirt soon! In your professional opinion, can we wash, dry and then iron items such as you shared with us, especially the 100% linen skirts and blouses? I never know for sure, but i’ve had good luck washing at home even though the labels usually say to dry clean only for linen. Your thoughts?

    • @Evelyn__Wood
      @Evelyn__Wood  3 года назад +2

Well, I don't dry clean anything 😀 Does that answer your question! 😁
