The girl finds the dead body of her true grandmother in the basement's dumpster and a bloody hammer. Finally, they could murder the scizophrenic residents and they both live.
The mom had a falling out with them before the kids were born. The entire movie was about forgiveness and the ability to communicate your fears, doubts, and rejections. Or did you not watch?
lmao the mum took 1-2 minutes to tell the kids that it wasn't their grandparents. If I were a mother I would be freaking out within the first second and telling them to leave the laptop and get the hell out.
And what? Scare your children? In situations like this its important to keep a level head. Also if she freaked out then the kids would start to cry because they're scared AF. Then the grandparents would come in and see that they are talking to their mother and try to kill them there.
No, you guys missed it. The mom didn't actually get right away that they were replacing the grandparents... That's why she reacted more mildly. Listen to the dialogue and facial expression. We all knew a twist was coming, and this in particular wasn't too shocking, but how they pulled this off and the delivery from the actors is still captivating.
Nah the delivery and acting wasn’t captivating. Shyamalan films are typically average acting ability but the twist is what makes the movie. If you like his twists don’t go watch Knock at the Cabin, there is none.
Their mother is trying to stay calm, in order to keep THEM calm. When you freak out, you make bad decisions. Escaping from this house requires careful planning.
Oh please. I was taking karate lessons actually mixed martial arts lessons since I was four by the time I was the oldest girls age I was already a black belt. Not to mention I was a complete sociopath so I would have gone all "home alone" and "problem child" on their asses and killed them both lol. And if you don't understand those movie references just look them up and you know what I mean LOL
That twist was actually so obvious but I didn't notice. And when the grandma started talking about little creatures living in the lake I was like 'Oh come on. Are you gonna tell me they are possessed by aliens or sth?" and then I watched that scene and I was so scared xD
What hints were there? When I saw this I was totally taken aback, because I just assumed that they were crazy family members that never interacted with the mother that much.
i think what I like about this film was I guessed the twist from the beginning, however this scene was executed so well! To the earlier reply of what hints were there, there were loads. The constant "are your grandparents in they haven't turned up for volunteering" and then the grandparents are never in. That and they are never present for the skype call. Plus the fact its an M Night Shyamalan film and its stated a lot that the kids have never seen the grandparents... its easy enough to guess, however as I said it was executed so well that it sent shivers down my spine despite me knowing it was coming. loved this film
The actress playing the mum plays it perfectly. Yes, a lot of us would react by screaming or freaking out. But some parents would fight to stay calm, which she portrays brilliantly, and it allows her to deliver the terrifying line perfectly: "those aren't your grandparents."
I remember watching this at the theatre. And actually ever since their "Hide and seek" game. I was like: "If I were there I wanna go home!" The plot twist was quite a twist because it being a horror story, I couldn't figure out if those two were really the grandparents or if they were possessed or their grandparents were just batsh*t crazy. Then their mom cleared it and I was like, "oh my god. For about a week I've been in a house with two crazy people and have NO idea what they're capable of." Crazy movie it was.
I am Italian, I was watching this movie in the cinema, full of people. The movie was all in Italian but the translation was good, that is not the point. When the mother says "Those are not your grandparents", all the cinema went with a very loud OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!! Frightening!! What a good twist!
You know what's crazy is that, in hindsight, I feel like I really SHOULD have seen this coming. It's really not all that crazy of a twist. Yet somehow it completely evaded me; never even crossed my mind as a possibility. I think that's a testament to how good M Night is (when he isn't sucking, of course).

Cool twist, but tbh: Why didn't the mom just show a picture of the real grandparents to the kids in advance, considering the fact that they never met them before and didn't know how they looked like?
At the beginning, they were holding up a sign that said "Welcome Rebecca and Tyler" so they must've stolen it after they killed the original grandparents, though showing them a picture should've been blatantly obvious to your children that have never seen them before.
Mother had trust, faith, because her mom and dad obviously she knew but prob thought what they hey the kids will be fine....BUT THEY WERENT so yeah should've shown picture or other proof of them to the children.

I think the mother may have had the best reaction imo. It's subtle, but you can tell that she's panicking on the inside but tries not to show it while talking to her children, but as soon as she looks away from the camera and starts calling the police, her movements are quick as if she is in huge distress and panic. I'd prefer someone who can act logically rather than irrationally, especially in a movie where the viewers have the comfort of looking at the situation from the outside, pause, and think rather logically as to what they would do in that situation.
If you want a similar scare that’s more realistic and more dangerous and that is probably playing out somewhere in the world right now, watch M. Night Shyamalans film he made 12 years before this one called, “The Village”. 😮
I wish the trailers didn't reveal they weren't the grandparents, and just had it like the grandparents were creepy. Then this reveal would've been so much more scary and impactful.
"Your emergency is very important to us. Your call will be answered in the order it was recieved. All officers are busy helping other victims.... Your emergency is very important to us...."
@Shay Beauty u know what reminds me of alek comment? real life this old lady 90 year old waited 21 minutes for the cop to show up... guess what they didn't so she had to kill the bad guy with a gun...
The helpless “where are nana and Poppop?” from the mom is what got me. Atleast it’d be a good story to tell other people if youd make it out alive lol. That’d be terrifying
I remember watching this in, albeit a small theatre. There were just 20 or so audience, and when the reveal happened, we all GASPED. The next 20 minutes I was at the edge of my seat. The twist was so good. I mean, it could've been too obvious but I think everything was just thinking possession, or aliens, or a cult or something...but not mistaken identity. And then you look back at the entire movie and it made sense. The kids have NEVER met their grandparents and their mother don't have a picture of them either. Super scary. What made it better were the comedic moments spread throughout the film. Shymalan breaks your emotion this way and that was genius.

I was expecting her to say something about them being old and it's natural, that caught me so off guard lol. Somehow I didn't expect that twist at all but it was perfect.
I honestly find this such a clever and original idea for a good creepy story. I love how Shyamalan is always coming up with these creative little thrillers.
You know I have stayed with my grandparents for a week, except before hand I have seen pictures of them, I have met them, talked to them, and my mom handed me off. I get the grandparents and the mother were suppose to have been estranged but still not making sure her kids go to the right people or not even showing pictures so they know what their grandparents looked like was just irresponsible and stupid. that took me out of the film.
But this woman ran away without any pictures or anything. She left them and had no idea if they even had any social media accounts, so just a telephone was good enough
@@xrstevenson It still seems too convenient. And bear in mind, the crazy couple go to pick the kids up without knowing they don't know what they look like.
@@xrstevenson I actually have only seen it once and I missed part of the beginning (I patched together the missing parts with RUclips vids) Just overall, it would be a very difficult thing to put things together to make it believable the kids would go there, no one would figure it out, etc etc (until the exact moment the movie wants it all to be revealed), and I just didn't find it convincing (I wasn't convinced they'd actually forget the kid in "Home Alone" either, but that was just a comedy) Shyamalans put a lot of thought and concentration into making a ghost seem like he was functioning in the real world until the end of The Sixth Sense, and his control of all the puzzle pieces was amazing, I thought. And I think that's what's lacking in most of his movies that I've seen (including "Split", which I agree with most people was a step up from some past stuff) The kind of movies he makes really need that kind of masterly putting-the-pieces-into-place thing, and I feel he's slacked off on it.

I actually picked this up quite easily. When the people kept coming back to the house asking where they were. Saying they haven't been to work in days....i picked up on that and that lady who saw them and found out. My friend didn't get it until I explained it to him.
it was predictable and made little sense. I mean really; the mother ether had no pictures or never showed any pictures of her parents to the kids especially before they leave on their own to spend a week with them. That was just stupid.
+Drake Loki hey the Sixth sense twist was predictable as Well. Malcom never interacts with anyone but colton, we know the dead think they are alive, when malcom is near people they are cold. Doesnt make it a bad one. This twist wasnt as good as Sixth sense or unbreakable but still manages to do the same thing : change the game of the story
+jean c rolon but in those movies the twist and premise didn't revolve around a mother being so irresponsible that she would send her kids blind and on their own to live with people they never seen or heard from, not even a picture for a week. Any older gentlemen could have picked up for any reason and they would have been non the wiser. That was so stupid I knew the twist in the first 5 minutes but ultimately my real issue is that seems like such a bad and dumb decision that it took me out of the film.
Honestly I wouldn't call that much of a plot-hole. The movie established that the mother had left the parents' house in a rush and never came back. You can only assume that she wasn't in the mood to bring photographs when she's storming out of the house in the middle of an argument. You might pick on the fact that aside from a text message she didn't contact the parents in other means of communication, which would've stopped the movie then and there :D Still, that can somewhat be attributed to the fact that she wasn't quite ready to be chill with her parents, perhaps hoping that she'd achieve that by sending the kids over. All in all, that's not much to complain about. Sure, it's not a tenner movie, but it's not inane like most horror movies.
That’s the most calm reaction I’ve ever seen.. my mom would’ve been screaming through the screen to run out of the house.
She was probably trying to stay calm and focused. When you enter a state of panic you don't think clearly.
I think she was trying to stay calm for her kids' sake, you get scared, they would get scared too.
Exactly. In a real life situation my mother would be freaking out and screaming through a screen while the monster eats my face.

No, they took the train.
you haven’t even seen the film??
Lmao she just watched the most important scene of the movie without actually watching the movie.
The mom had a falling out with them before the kids were born. The entire movie was about forgiveness and the ability to communicate your fears, doubts, and rejections. Or did you not watch?
Lol
creepy scene but the moms reaction is weird, If I saw people posing as my parents/grandparents I WOULD FLIP OUT
It was to add suspense.
lmao the mum took 1-2 minutes to tell the kids that it wasn't their grandparents. If I were a mother I would be freaking out within the first second and telling them to leave the laptop and get the hell out.
InvictuZ she was in shock
Becka, those aren't your grandparents. (Still half-smiling)
What are you talking about?
Where are nana and poppop?
(Moment of realization) - You mean you've been staying with those people this whole time? - **Cue Starting freaking out...
What a twist 😱
Hell yeah
Wasn't expecting that
Coming from that director I expected nothing less
First time a twist from Shymalan isn’t supernatural or science fiction
Jacob Waters what about The Village the whole movie you’re made to believe that it’s supernatural then finding out it’s not
We all knew a twist was coming, and this in particular wasn't too shocking, but how they pulled this off and the delivery from the actors is still captivating.
Nah the delivery and acting wasn’t captivating. Shyamalan films are typically average acting ability but the twist is what makes the movie. If you like his twists don’t go watch Knock at the Cabin, there is none.
You’ve clearly got low expectations when it comes to acting kiddo.
The reaction from the mom is like the worst acting I’ve ever seen.......
Jackie Mehoff she's not a bad actor. She's quite good actually. I think the reaction was written like that in the script and she had to follow
It's honestly more so the writing
Jackie Mehoff she’s so slow. If you’ve children tell you this, you don’t just sit there
@@aleksander6793 Well, that's obvious really
She only reacts like that because she’s unsure if they are joking that’s why she asks “where’s nana and papa”
Now that is a twist, makes sense and is plausible, way to go Shyamalan.
Joseph Dutra I wish the child actor's weren't horrible, I wish shamalan built up the tension for this part better

Their mother is trying to stay calm, in order to keep THEM calm. When you freak out, you make bad decisions. Escaping from this house requires careful planning.
they were probably so shocked they couldn’t move. i know tbis comment is 1 year late but i just watched this film

Conrad Schmidt
Conrad Schmidt has
Conrad Schmidt fuckin same lol
I was like: "If I were there I wanna go home!"
The plot twist was quite a twist because it being a horror story, I couldn't figure out if those two were really the grandparents or if they were possessed or their grandparents were just batsh*t crazy.
Then their mom cleared it and I was like, "oh my god. For about a week I've been in a house with two crazy people and have NO idea what they're capable of."
Crazy movie it was.

Shymalan, you are a true legend. I'll always support you (maybe not AVATAR) but this, this twist was the best, I was at the edge of my seat from this point til the end
Shymalan WISHED he did Avatar....that was James Cameron. And it was better than literally ALL of Shymalan's films (maybe not Sixth Sense or his second film, can't think of the name) by far.
Tron show he meant the last air bender, you know the movie based off the Avatar cartoon. it was obvious what he meant and it didn't need correction. Also I don't get why people like this film. The twist was obvious and made little sense. What good parent would let their kids leave unattended to meet with people they never met or at the very least saw pictures of before.
second film is unbreakable. pretty good film.
Tron Snow If you're gonna shit on a director, at least know what films they directed. And you literally make no sense when you say literally then say maybe not.
Really good movie. I'm glad Hollywood didn;t give up on Shyamalan. His new movie coming out in January looks good, too.
and the reveal of Split was epic as well! All hail the Shyamalamaverse

Cool twist, but tbh: Why didn't the mom just show a picture of the real grandparents to the kids in advance, considering the fact that they never met them before and didn't know how they looked like?
Sollvi H she resented her parents after the dad hit her for hitting her mother
At the beginning, they were holding up a sign that said "Welcome Rebecca and Tyler" so they must've stolen it after they killed the original grandparents, though showing them a picture should've been blatantly obvious to your children that have never seen them before.
- yeah that doesn’t sound like an enjoyable film.
Mother had trust, faith, because her mom and dad obviously she knew but prob thought what they hey the kids will be fine....BUT THEY WERENT so yeah should've shown picture or other proof of them to the children.
She had no pics of them, she had cut off all contact with them previously
Seeing this movie with a big audience was amazing. When the mom says, "Those aren't your grandparents", the whole audience let out an audible "What??". Then about 10 seconds later, everyone started yelling "Omg, get out of the house!!". One of the best movie experiences I've ever had 😆

The freaky part is that the “grandparents” let them record, knowing the recording wouldn’t get out..
This is one of the scariest scenes ever. No blood no torture no gore just a very real scene that could happen in reality
Yep I agree
If you want a similar scare that’s more realistic and more dangerous and that is probably playing out somewhere in the world right now, watch M. Night Shyamalans film he made 12 years before this one called, “The Village”. 😮
I wish the trailers didn't reveal they weren't the grandparents, and just had it like the grandparents were creepy. Then this reveal would've been so much more scary and impactful.

And it isn't just that one little thing, I don't think that overall it was remotely believable that the pretense could've been kept up until the exact moment the plot wanted it revealed.

@@bookerjones8123 in the beginning the "Grandparents" had a sign with the kids names on it so They clearly had no idea what they looked like either

The twist, the fucking plot twist that shock us and bend our minds
He is back, SHYAMALAN IS BACK!!!!
it was predictable and made little sense.
+Drake Loki ok I can see that
Honestly I wouldn't call that much of a plot-hole.
