    When many individual organisms come together and move as one entity, that’s a swarm. From a handful of birds to billions of insects, swarms can be almost any size. They have no leader, and members interact only with their neighbors or through indirect cues. Members follow simple rules: travel in the same direction as those around you, stay close and avoid collisions. Maria R. D’Orsogna shares why.
    Lesson by Maria R. D’Orsogna, animation by Matt Reynolds.

    The cells in our brain, the neurons, don't they basically do same thing when it comes to swarm intelligence?
    On its own a neuron might not look like much but when joined with trillions of others and enough neuroconnections between them it will be a different story.

    Have we learned nothing from the animals? The ants are not born to be individuals; that is not how their are wired. People, though, are wired to live in families and rely on those that they trust. They ended on a good note and refused to say the obvious other side, which was that at some point, when something in the swarm physchology does go wrong, we all face the consequences.

      safer drone navigation from bats, etc are metaphor? I don't think you are using the term metaphor right. We learned hints from swarm intelligence for our technology. So it is answered, yes.

    • @msjkramey
      @msjkramey 6 лет назад

      That's assuming that we could ever create true intelligence. Then it would be literally swarm intelligence. The way I viewed the question was "do we use / have swarm intelligence right now? In any kind of case, in our own physical bodies." Everything else, what we invent or create is metaphorical because it's an imitation of it and is not the same as animals swarming of their own instincts. A closer example would be if you wanted to argue that mob mentality is a form of swarming

    A comment about fish swarming: schools of fish may actually be easier prey for certain predators. However, there may be an ecological, neurological balance in the predator's brain i.e. the predator may have evolved not to eat the whole school. Predators ecologically depend on prey for their survival.
