    Appreciate this review👏 I went to see The Dark Knight at the IMAX in Waterloo when it first came out and it was breathtaking. It was also the only movie I’ve been to where the audience gave a standing ovation at the end, which was quite something. The IMAX experience was extraordinary and this 4K disc and audio is as close as we will ever get to that. The audio mix in the 4K disc is wonderful and I cannot fault the image quality

    Saw The Dark Knight Rises at the Waterloo IMAX, the only time I’ve ever been, and I still remember it vividly, emblazoned in my visual memory. Living in rural Scotland has its benefits but the lack of an IMAX cinema is not one of them.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  Год назад

      I believe there used to be a genuine IMAX in Glasgow but they gave up on the format thinking the low quality 4K video projector would be an upgrade. I think there were two others in Britain that made the same mistake but apparently there are plans to re-open Bradford with genuine IMAX shortly. The BFI IMAX are going to get the only 15/70 print in the UK for the DUNE Sequel but that won't look quite as good as a genuine 15/70 film as this one was shot entirely on 4K video so the print is a blow-up from that. It should give a more natural presentation than any cinema that video projects it though.
      John.

      Yes, I think I'd better give it a while longer before I finally look at Batman vs. Superman. I didn't like Man of Steel but I can see why it was made the way it was and it's great that people are making films for youngsters like that. Unfortunately, my preference is for the original comic style and films where you can see what is actually happening: that's not meant to be a criticism but I stopped playing computer games 30 years ago and Man of Steel was so fast it looked to me like it was aimed at gamers. If that film and his later films get youngsters into cinemas I'm all for it. John.

I know we can tend to get a bit obsessive over having the latest thing but I tend to watch anything on our television screen with just a stereo amplifier driving a pair of speakers we've had for over 25 years and they still sound perfect. I have loads of JBL Control 1G speakers on other systems and they are tiny so a pair of those and a stereo amplifier would only cost about £150 in total. Then again, you might already have something better than that so just ignore me!

      Good morning Stephen. It seems that there's roughly an even split between all three films with regards to which we think is the best. But it seems some people were turned off the third film because of a critic who detailed all the plot holes which proliferate throughout all three films. I don't care because they're comic books brought to life and although they lack the 'gothic' look of the 1989 film, they're so spectacular you can't help but to like them. John.

      I'm glad you like the little plug for your channel Clark. Murder on the Orient Express is a bit like Apocalypse Now in that it's not really a film that a younger audience is likely to fully appreciate but if the image quality is anywhere near as good on your system as it is on mine then you won't care if you don't particularly like the film because it's simply a marvel to look at. The cast is unparalleled, an acting masterclass and a classic Agatha Christie story in a confined environment in which you get to know who all the characters are. The follow up 'Death on the Nile' is out here in October and there are going to be 70mm prints so I'll be heading to London. If you can find a cinema that is going to screen it in 70mm it could be a good bit of research for you to see what you think of the best film format. If you can get into the projection booth too then you'll be in for a real treat so never be embarrassed to ask if you can go and see the film projection equipment at work. Some cinemas are pleased that people are interested so it is possible to get into there on occasion, particularly if the projectionist appreciates the attention.
      Black Magic Design Davinci Resolve is full of things that can catch you out so it might mean some disappointments and occasions when you have to start all over again but the results can be as good as anything you'll ever see. The main thing to beware of is that you need a super computer to run the latest version and the second thing to beware of is that you must set the correct frame rate before you start editing because it can't be changed after you start and if you do get it wrong the end product will have image stagger due to frames being dropped. In other words, shoot in NTSC at 23.97 frames per second (or PAL at 25fps or NTSC at 29.97fps) and ensure the Davinci Resolve file is set to the same frame rate before doing anything. John.

It was a terrible time for cinema and it wasn't helped by all the low quality computer effects being added to films. The Dark Knight was an obsession of mine in the summer 2008. I went to an IMAX preview about 6 months earlier which contained the heist sequence and it blew my mind. Once I watched the film in it’s entirety, I couldn’t believe a performance could be given as good as Heath Ledger’s Joker - and I went to see a further 8 or 9 times - and probably around 4 times on imax at Printworks, Manchester... Absolutely The Dark Knight Rises is the best of the three - the main problem with it I think are the poorly directed crowd fight scenes (though all of the cops being out of action should have had a better set up too). A lot of comic fans had a hard time with Bruce Wayne becoming a recluse and other behaviour they deemed un-Batmanlike (and disappointed that Bane wasn't as cartoonish as he is in the comic), but they forget that Nolan's Batman was one that, if not exactly grounded in reality, had at least a couple of toes on the ground (what's that? you don't believe a city would accept being locked down for a mere 5 months?). I do not currently own any super 8 films but I am keeping my eyes open on ebay for a good super 8 gem, like I said I saw the first couple reels of the exorcist and the other day I saw a original 1989 batman trailer on super 8. they both sold out in the first 3 days, so now that I have the main asset to project the film, all I need is an actual film. Chinon produced some really good Super 8 projectors. I have an SS1200 but I used it to death and although it still runs there are one or two issues with it so it's not one I use any longer except for the odd bit of nostalgia.
      Shame you didn't get that Batman trailer because I think that is the Derann Film Services print and that is where I got my 35mm Batman trailer of identical content from. It is therefore highly likely that my 35mm trailer was the master for the Super 8 release and I just happened to be there and spot it on the day they sold it off.... for £2.
      All Super 8 projectors are auto thread as far as I know. I've not seen one that isn't anyway. They have to be really because it's such a small gauge and would be a bit fiddly to manually thread up. Having said that, I have a standard 8mm projector that has to be threaded manually and it's all set up rather easily.
      Thanks to your input I think I've worked out the ending of The Shining so I might do a 'spoiler alert' at the end of the video and advise people to turn off now if they don't want to know before I discuss my/our interpretation of the ending.

    Great review John. I myself also prefer The Dark Knight Rises over TDK.. it combines all three films and ends nicely. TDK is a great film but it always feels like two or three films morphed into one in my opinion. So?. What's your theory of the end?. Does Alfred just picture Bruce Wayne outside in the cafe at the end or has Bruce finally found solice and killed off his alter ego so he could live his own life?.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 года назад

      Well I do shoot the videos in 4K but there's more to it than compiling the finished product in 4K and slapping it up. The general rule of thumb is that there is no point in uploading a video in 4K unless it has HDR applied. There are exceptions where professional film makers have the best equipment and ensure the best image quality at the end of the process but with me just sitting in front of a camera and talking there really is no point as there would be no discernible difference between 2K and 4K. Where there will be a discernible difference is in the time it takes to upload the same video in 4K because I would have to compile it at a much higher bit rate to preserve the image quality. As it is on my fibre connection this one took about an hour to upload. In 4K it would take around 3 hours.
      The video projector I use is over 3 years old now but if you can find a second hand one that's got low hours then it's worth considering. It's an Optoma UHD550X and it was amazingly good value. I purchased it on the basis of the model that cost twice as much but I soon had this one set up to look even better than the demonstration we had with the more expensive machine. Optoma do offer a sub-£1k projector now and that would be worth looking at if my own is anything to go by. Amazing image quality... if you know how to set one up!!! John.

      By the way, I saw when you said you were using sound out of your television and I realize funds aren't easy to come by but you don't have to spend a fortune on a good surround sound system these days. A stereo setup can work wonders but if you save up and get a fairly basic home cinema sound amplifier you can add speakers over a period of time. Richer sounds tend to start the amps at about £100 and speakers about £50 a pair.
      Tonight I expect we'll be watching one of the Jurassic World films which I don't expect much of but I got a double disc pack of both the films in 4K for £8.95 so I don't think I'll be too disappointed.

    I agree with you Batman begins is my favorite movie, with Dark Knight being my least favorite. For me nothing beats an origin story and a story about somebody being down at their lowest and rising up, facing, and beating their challenges, a la Rocky.

    • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 года назад

      Aspect ratios do tend to drive people crackers at home but they are historical from the various cinema formats over the years. That is why cinemas have motorized masking to frame the relevant ratio about to his the screen. The masking changes should take place behind curtains but sadly curtains cost money and as few of us care much for showmanship any longer, curtains/tabs are going the way of the Dodo. I still set the masking to frame all the different aspect ratios, particularly when I'm screening a film print.
      It's a very short teaser trailer to Anna and the King which is on the front of the theatrical release print for Star Wars Episode 1 The Phantom Menace. Another one on there that shows up I think is The Beach. These were two of a bunch of coming soon films that hadn't then seen the light of day... only the light of a projector!

Both look great, but I struggled telling the difference on many shots (on a 55" OLED at close distance). This really surprised me since I know it was shot on very high quality film and it is one of your favorite UHD movies when it comes to image quality. • @moviecollector5920
      @moviecollector5920  3 года назад

      A few people have found that Murder on the Orient Express does not look as good as it should on their systems. I don't know if there's a single answer to this but I really need to give our regular advice in the videos to ensure that players and displays have any digital 'enhancements' switched off or minimized with 'Sharpen' being the prime candidate for messing up an image. Orient Express has exceptional HDR so maybe something is going wrong there. Often on my system the HDR is overblown and the picture is destroyed but if your Blu-ray looks almost identical to the 4K then HDR is not doing its job well at all.
      It was shot on 65mm film stock for 70mm release and as you can imagine, modern film stock means that this release is very fine grain and almost perfect to look at. I haven't yet seen another than can match it but maybe it just needs a bigger picture to fully capture how good it is. Any chance of getting a 4K projector demonstration nearby and taking that disc with you? I'd love to get to the bottom of this one Andreas.

I expected it to be considerably sharper than the Blue-ray. I have a 55" quite modern OLED (a year old). I have it in Filmmaker mode so it has no extra sharpness added, no motion processing etc. I think both the Blue-ray and the UHD looks great, its just that they look very similar. I have been surprised by other movies like the 5th Element and Jurrassic Park looking good. Basically I thought the UHD version looked a bit less good than I expected and the Blue-ray looked much better than expected.

    • @andreasoberg2021
      @andreasoberg2021 3 года назад

      @@moviecollector5920 Another note. On my system HDR has never been overblown, however several movies I play are very dark. Mostly it is old Blu-rays so I need to fiddle a lot with the settings. I use Xbox X as my UHD player so maybe that has something to do with it. It almost seems as if the Blu-ray is interprered as HDR when its not so the brightest spot will be say 30% of the brightness that the TV can be displayed. With a few minutes of testing this can be fixed, but of course would be better if one did not have to do it. For this reason I actually try to replace most of my Blu-rays with UHD so that the luminance will be stable in the images. It seems like the players and TV struggle with dealing with both HDR and non-HDR material.

      The 4K discs in this Dark Knight set are perceptibly better than the Blu-rays but all our systems vary. I really need to start including a recommendation for everyone to ensure every digital 'enhancement' on their systems is off as these things can really mess with the image quality. 'Sharpen' is the worst offender but even so, all displays and player combinations are different and what looks good on one may only look average on another. The three films all looked first class on my system and got better with each film. Astounding quality. I'm sure I replied to your comment before but it's just reappeared in my list of comments I haven't responded to so I thought I ought to respond again just in case my previous reply didn't get through. Thank you for your kind words. Young Clark has done a 4K review of The Shining and I'm doing one too so maybe his channel will get a bit of a boost when we both finally upload them. John.

    You know, I find it difficult to pick a favourite from the three films. They are each tonally different and bring their own differences to the story. This boxset is a delight and I simply treat the three films as one 7 and a half hour movie 👍🏽

      I think that's perfect summing up Coyley... they are one long movie. We watched one per night over three nights and after the first film we were really looking forward to getting into the cinema over the next two evenings. That's a blooming good sign if you ask me. John.

      @@trevorml1362 It seems to be the most popular from the people who have commented on here. It has the biggest scale of the three films and has the best ending so that probably has a bearing. But next time a lot of us watch the trio we might have a different opinion. Although having said that, the IMAX 70mm ensures that last film is always going to be a little extra special even on our 4K home videos. John.

      I ran the film yesterday and I need to check the disc on my other player as about 40 minutes in the image started to break up, the sound shortly after went off and finally the disc froze completely. A bit of a concern given how many 4K discs I've purchased in the past 18 months. I'll probably be a few days before I can record anything or have a review ready so don't wait for me. When I do get one done and up I'll include a link to your own and mention it and how mine came about as a result of you mentioning that you were about to review The Shining. First time I watched it I thought there were too many holes in it and I haven't changed my mind this time. Neither my wife nor I can fathom the ending exactly but perhaps we're not supposed to. My take on it is that Jack is a ghost and he's going through a loop whereby he experiences more or less the same thing over and over again but it still doesn't really make sense. John.

      @@moviecollector5920 oh don't worry, a lot of 4K discs have a little screw-up every now and again. Arrow video makes a lot of mistakes. my theory about the end of the shining is that the hotel has eaten jack up and now jack is apart of the hotel now, the other people in the 4th of july picture are the other people who have been sucked up by the hotel. as funny as my theory sounds, thats what I think. the end of clockwork orange also has one of those twist endings. Both those 35mm films should be good on 4K because, let's face it, they always are. But if you want the best then keep an eye out for films released on 70mm or even IMAX 70mm (15/70). Even some Blu-ray discs if from a 65mm negative will look better than most 4K releases and a great example of this is 'Grand Prix' and 'How The West Was Won' with that second film being only one of two genuine Cinerama feature film releases. Thank you Brandon. I think the compression used is amazing. To go from over 1Gb per second to a 50Gb Blu-ray disc is quite unbelievable, particularly when you consider how good the finished products actually look. However, I believe 35mm film should be scanned at almost 6K to ensure every detail is fully captured so what would that mean for IMAX? 45K perhaps? Film - it's incredible. John.
