Chris Fleming | He Should Be Way More Popular | Mike Birbiglia's Working It Out Podcast

- In Chris Fleming’s recent Peacock stand-up special Hell, he calls out some audience members who are married and shouts, “This show is not for people who have wives. You have a wife?! Go see Mike Birbiglia!” Fleming is fearless about dragging the names of other comedians into his bits: from Bo Burham to Nikki Glaser to Bert Kreischer and more. Chris is a Massachusetts theater kid turned comedian and it manifests in stand-up comedy that is simultaneously avant-garde but also crowd-pleasing. Mike and Chris sit down for a truly productive session of working out new material and they break down why Massachusetts is so darn repressed. Plus, they do no-holds-barred impressions of each other in what is one of the most unhinged episodes of Working it Out of all time.

Chris, you continue to conquer your fear of talking to men! We are so proud
Chris does NOT have to feel bad about calling out Saint Vincent and Bo Burnham
Right
I am so glad you had Chris Fleming as a guest! I've always thought he should have a bigger audience. Hopefully this conversation will help more people see and appreciate his work.
This is one of the first times I’ve ever seen anyone try this hard to successfully pin Chris Fleming to the board. Great interview!
I still go back and watch every episode of Gayle now and then. Truly never gets old.
Iconic
By far the most chronically underrated comic around today. Without a doubt
"you're not a loser. you're a storyteller'" LOL
Is this a reference? I don't get it 😭
Showpig is my favorite hour of standup ever. So there.
Saaaame, everyone I’ve recommended it to has loved it, which never happens with other stuff. So cool
chris has such amazing comedic instincts, so amazing to see him in a more relaxed context
I cannot express my love for Chris Fleming. Thank you for this.
"You don't really want to strip for your family it's just not where it's at," made my morning.
I swear I see dipiglio out of the corner of my eye at night
Hearing the doctor joke draft now that Chris has posted the whole bit is so fun omg
This was so freakin’ great to see! I mean, literally, when I saw Chris was the guest, I knew I needed to watch the RUclips, not just listen - and this was the most calm I’ve ever seen him! I’m so happy to have gotten this tiny peek into the inner workings of Chris Fleming (good name for their next special), I appreciate him so very much.
For the past couple of years, if anyone’s inquired about my sexual identity or preference, I’ve said “Chris Fleming”, and I’m so happy to hear Chris’ is ephemeral & undefinable; I feel seen.
OK, I get anxious about what I write, and I just went & thesaurused “ephemeral” to make sure that it meant what I was envisioning, which is… flowy & ghostlike, you can feel the presence but not see it, and yes, it does mean that, BUT it can also mean “microscopic, infinitesimal”… and, for myself, yep, that tracks.
@@CarenKH1 your reflections in your reply to yourself really made me laugh. In my mind you meant ethereal maybe? I totally agree with you in all that you said, god I love Chris on podcasts. If you haven’t already seen it you should totally go watch him on the So True pod with Caleb Hearon.. I’m not a huge fan of that pod for the most part but the Chris episode is truly a feast, I think you’d really dig it
I love Chris! It's interesting to hear how he wants to keep his sexuality/gender feelings ambiguous. I can understand the flattening thing, like if it's all condensed into labels based on who he's been into or his relationship with masculinity, depending on which labels they are, the way he presents himself could come across to some people as possibly queerbaiting or appropriative instead of what it should be, fun and liberating.
Chris feeling very serious and protective of people with disabilities 🥺🥺
SICK JAN we don't have to claim a home office if it means we'll both go to jail (for a long time!!!)
Two of my favorite people for over a decade having a conversation! Riffing! Pinch me
I’m in this part of the vent diagram as well!
im more invested in this supposed fleming x burnham beef than kendrick and drake........
saw Chris and clicked immediately!!
Me too!
I’ve been waiting my entire life for this collab
SAME
"A trickster you would see in a clearing" 😂
Chris is so damn funny and deserves a huge audience. Glad to see him on this pod.
I didn’t know Mike had a podcast til I saw Chris put clips on ig - two of my absolute favourite comedians together. I’m so HAPPY
So proud to have been a fan since the car rant days, Chris Fleming is a TREASURE
Was Chris chewing went he took a sip while talking about St Vincent? Is that.. boba? In a mug? Man truly has a problem
He really should, but I’m thrilled that Peacock picked up his special a few months ago. Hopefully the first of many.
I’ve already watched every single thing Chris has seen, my absolute favorite comedian. I’ve also listened to every single episode of working it out and adore Mike so this was a dream come true!
so glad to see both of my favs in the same room :,)
Brilliant, so excited to see him in manchester soon
Chris Fleming has big Morlock energy and I say that with love as a fellow sewer-dweller!!!!!!! Saw Chris live once at the Troc in Philadelphia and it was so funny and FUN and I was more energized than anxious when he heckled every part of the audience
Oh lord, I have SCREAM-laughed my way through this. I love love love.
this has the same energy, to me, as like. anderson cooper earnestly interviewing gonzo. ive never felt more like i was watching a human man treating a muppet as a longtime friend
This was the most like casual/straightforward I’ve ever seen Chris! Loved it what a fun combo
I love Chris so much
Finding out y’all are both from Mass makes me so happy
When he said who do you pray to? I wanted the answer to be DiPiglio so bad.
Gayle is still the greatest thing ever put on the Internet.
My favorite comedian hands down (sorry Mike!) - Absolutely should be way more popular. A true avant-garde as you say!
Im obsessed with alt cit het comedians obsession with punk rock
Okay but if St. Vincent thinks she was the focal point of that story instead of the TRUE protagonists (Crazy Pete and Kevin McGee) then that's a her problem
Here to support. I missed the Philly show this year but really excited to go back into my room and wait and rot until Chris comes back to my city
Specifically need to mention how he hits the sufjan vein of society, such delicate buffoonery. love u chris
Chris is so fucking funny. I was at the Boston show where he's in that orange jump suit and all i can say is he's even funnier live. My sides hurt from laughing so hard for like a solid hour.
This is unbelievable! Thank you for having him on
Did anyone notice the delay between Mike saying “I’m sure you like Bo’s comedy” and Chris saying “…sure…”?
Him mentioning Shrewsbury is low key kind of funny
I love Chris Fleming 🥰
this is such a thoughtful interview
their chemistry is insane. I mean this in the most respectful way possible as a person who has been a huge chris fleming fan for years: they should kiss
The collab we didnt know we needed
dreams do come true
Literally
Looooooove Chris!!
Chris Fleming is like a face-hugger, creep came outta no where and now I can't get away. so fuckin funny
Obsessed with this !!!
I’ve absolutely loved Chris since Gayle ❤
Yessss! Nobody better than Chris Fleming. I'm so excited for this one.
This interview gave me more reason to live Chris. Not least of which is finding out about Best Buddies.
I have that same shirt, Mike. Every time I see you in a talk show I’m oddly comforted that we have similar style choices
I love the thrusting upon that Chris Fleming likes Bo Burnham…. And the squeal falsetto response
“Do you picture white jesus?” I am obsessed
DiPigilio still kills me. Everything is you do whackly gold.
love ya chris
chris isnt religious he’s traumatised why is mike not understanding it
Catholic brain damage
When he said OCD i understood immediately lol
chris is so interesting! love to see him on nmomre podcasts these days
"Do you picture White Jesus?" What a great question to disarm Chris lmao
I love Chris so much and it may be partly a result of my eternal childhood memories of my deep-seated bone-crushing akwardness
Chris rules!
I don't know why Mike gets nervous for interviews. He's so easy to talk to! He puts everyone at ease, it's really quite impressive. You just want to be his best buddy!
I love this interview very much, but can everyone please stop asking Chris about his gender and sexual orientation? Isn't that kind of gauche at this point?
Right? Feels like we should just let people bring it up if they want to talk about it
longhander - there can be only one.
As a transplant to Massachusetts from Pennsylvania, i completely agree with the hot takes about how Massachusans don't know how to love. I've been here 5 years and STILL haven't made a friend who grew up in Massachusetts, just other transplants.
It's like little who grew up here pride themselves on needing no one and nothing other than their own stubbornness.
i'd just like to point out that Mike said, "Romey's very Muslim" and that's amazing.
Hey Mike... I listened your standups looong looong ago and I find you really funny. Few weeks ago I found out that you have a Podcast, subscribed but I cant find the courage to start listening... Im afraid that you are not that funny as I remembered
These are my two favorite comics of all time and I need a moment to recover from the power of this episode 🫡
