      Hey I've got the names of two youtube musicians who might be able to help you. Granted they are both bass players, they still have the knowledge and ability to convey these concepts nicely.
      Even though they are not playing the same instrument that we do, their perspective really does help how you think of your left hand role. Adam Neely and Scott' Devine are the two bass players I think do a great job with theory videos.
      If you want to become a good soloist I suggest listening to people that you might like to emulate. Idk who is on your list but if you're still interested comment back and I can give you a short list of jazz artists with well defined improv voices.

    You are playing blues riffs above a chord progression, it sounds nice, but the essence of the montuno is the clave. There two:3/2 and 2/3, you are playing in 2/3 clave. That blues riff works well, but I invite you to hear Eddie Palmierie, Papo Lucca, Oscar Hernandez, Larry Harlow, Luis Marin, and other portorrican master.

    • @JonnyMay
      @JonnyMay  9 лет назад

      +Daniela Gonzalez You can play them on a 61-key keyboard but you may have to play low parts one octave higher, or high parts one octave lower. Ideally it would be best to have 88 keys so that you get the full range of the instrument.

    You are a great musician and a excelente piano player...Ive learned many many tricks from you..but the way you play latin music its not the best..you have to know how the clave works,and knows the basics of "tumbaos" and "guajeos".and how to apply chords in both hands:you are playing something like "boogaloo".and the improvisation in latin music goes beyond from pentatonic and blue scales.anyway, its a good job for Musicians from USA whom wants to learn about it...My respect for you,best regards.

    good video, but I dont think you should be playing a heavy one in the left hand accompaniment.... the heavy beats in cuban jazz are 2+ and 4.
    ...or rahter: you´re mixing at least twodifferent styles; when you do the " stride-ish" left hand accompaniment it is applieable for cha cha cha ( at least thats what i hear) and the walking bass sounds like tumbao cuban jazz

    I admire all your work and talent with jazz but in this case i have to say that you don't manage latin jazz very well, it sounds rigid, it has not latin flavor, it has not "tumbao". Is a matter of expresivennes, not technique or musical knowledge. But it doesn't matter, is imposible to domain all jazz styles and i like a lot your 30s to 50s style.

    • @YoenValeria
      @YoenValeria 8 лет назад

      Exactly, although it's a nice job!

    • @tropicvibe
      @tropicvibe 8 лет назад +4

      In all fairness, it was pretty good...I've played latin piano for the past 20 years as an on-call replacement for dozens of bands when their own keyboardists can't make gigs here in NYC. The problem is not so much in the tumbao as you point out, but in the placement of downbeats and upbeats. When he first begins, he's obviously playing an Am7-D7 to Bm7b5-E7 progression in 2-3 clave. The 1st bar is fine and by the book but in the 2nd bar which is the 3 side of the clave, he accents the 3rd downbeat which throws off the clave and makes it sound as if he were playing the 2 side again. The solution is quite simple; omit that 3rd downbeat in the 2nd bar and make them all syncopated upbeats. Or omit all downbeats in the 1st bar and leave the 2nd bar as is, effectively turning the tumbao into 3-2 clave. Of course this is not written in stone and we're not taking into account the dozens of variations using arpeggiation, off time figures, cycling, unison playing, harmonized playing, etc. I liked the bass line very much, it was swinging but not common in straight ahead latin music...yet it could've also been played in clave, strengthening the tumbao. I must say though, the gentleman is quite talented and probably has a better technical command of the keyboard than I do.
