    On small jobs like that with any tile... Put a sheet over the countertop to put the tile flat... Layout all your tiles directly onto the flat surface and precut all your tiles, including the outlets using an outlet box for those cuts... Apply your thinset and transfer your prefabricated tile directly... No scraping off, no citing and fitting all tiles and you get a preview of how it's gonna look without slivers of tile to cut because you can see where your problem areas are and adjust accordingly... I also use a bent or folded look in the corners measuring the tile on the one side and continuing it to the next wall so it looks bent or folded around the corner...

    • @haroldped
      @haroldped 2 года назад +2

      Smartass is no smartass. I like the detail of folding around inside corners. Depending on the kitchen layout, it may be best to start at inside corners. It is a bugger to start at an end and realize you have a 1/2" wide tile in one of these corners.

    Very nice job. When cutting small or big tiles push it with a comfortable size sacrificial tile. This will prevent chipping at the end.

    Nice job. One thing I might have done differently would have been on the inside corner. Whenever I have a short tile going into an inside corner, I will have another short or cut tile coming out of the inside corner. Think of it as if you were folding the tile into the corner. If you have 6" long tiles and there is 3" going in to the corner, have 3" coming out of the corner. If a full tile goes in, then a full tile goes out.

    Excellent video. I would use painter's tape at the top of the first course as a guide in setting tile, as sometimes laminate countertop have dips in them. Also, it may be easier to remove outlets - or at least tape the contacts - to not have to work around them.

    I've been researching a lot and mastic should only be used for porcelain or ceramic tile in non wet area. The mastic is pretty much like a glue. You shouldn't use it on glass because it turns yellow and can be seen through the translucent glass tiles.
    Mapei has the type 1 adhesive mastic but for glass tiles they have a bag specially for glass tiles you have to mix.

    • @tspfull
      @tspfull 3 года назад +1

      Too correct. Additionally non porous tiles like glass won’t let the adhesive dry properly unless it’s designed for glass and porcelain which the premixed aren’t.

    I’ve ripped out so many tiles in my life where the DIY homeowner did it and didn’t think about the big picture. Like you have a laser and a great saw and are smart enough to use an efficient blade for cutting glass. Lay out, material usage. Etc etc. People don’t think about all this, even more so they always forget about understanding products they are using. There is more to every trade than just “putting tiles on a wall”

      If you try to take the tile off & start over, you will probably destroy your drywall or backerboard. The best case scenario is tile will come off clean, but your mastic will have to be chipped off which will end up as drywall replacement.
      Expensive lesson to learn. Would've been cheaper to hire, sad to say.

    Don't think I'm crazy however I'm on a budget but I want to have a nice house too and a nice kitchen can I use different tiles that match that were on sale at home Depot? And how far does the tile have to go up to the rule of thumb! I want to rip out at least three cabinets paint my laminate counter and paint three cabinets that I want to keep. I'm getting rid of everything less is best for me I hate clutter however, I'm a bit messy! I live in a very tiny house you so suck in the living room it looks like a tornado hit it! I don't even want to get the table in the kitchen I'm just going to make a kitchen island from my 30-year-old couch. I took it apart it's Birchwood! The tile that I got on sale is a glass subway tile I guess you call it! I want to paint my kitchen floor too! However I really don't have to which I don't think I am I think I'm going to bring it up rip it up and put vinyl floor down in the kitchen. The college scheme will be blue baby blue a darker blue a grayish a silver however a shabby Chic French farmhouse! I had to talk with myself I know it sounds crazy but we all agreed that I could do it on a budget! I am very creative and an artist I just need someone to encourage me! Especially when I take the cabinets down I know my boyfriend's going to start screaming at me he doesn't live with me, so I have to go undercover but I know it's the best way to do it is to move some of these cabinets plus I hate that they don't go to the ceiling and the dust increase that gets up there drives me insane! Thanks for listening and anyone give me any advice and please be nice! I want to do it! Thank you and if anybody lives in New Jersey we perhaps we can borrow! ✌️🤟

    Great work. But will be cheaper to hire someone to do it. Your one is not not like those stupid DIYs from professionals who claimed as DIY and use super expensive tools to do simple things. For one time job like this purchasing tools like the saw and that expensive laser level are just waste of money for homeowners and you could simply mention that to make it real DIY.

    • @ColossalMcBuzz
      @ColossalMcBuzz 2 года назад

      It depends on which tools you buy. You don't need a $500+ tile saw if you're planning on one or two projects. A cheap sub $100 saw will work fine, or rent one. I bought a laser level years ago and have used it for numerous things. It's indispensable for hanging shelves. If you use the tools over the years, the cost becomes more justifiable.

    You provide description of how to do a decent job and you may be a DIYer Im not sure. This is no way a professional job and it shows by many unevenly spaced joints. You could see as you were installing and then with white grout you cant get away with it. I may have missed where you say you were doing your own home and if I did Im sorry but maybe watch some of the pros do a nice backsplash install and it will greatly help yours.
