- We've been excited to share this one with you for a while! Join astrophotographer Fergus Kennedy in the high mountains of Almeria, Spain and the Calar Alto Observatory, as he shares how to use the new Canon EOS Ra to capture stunning images from the Milky Way and the tricks of the astrophotography trade.
Far from light pollution, this is the largest astronomical complex in continental Europe - and the perfect viewpoint to capture the majesty of the night sky. A specialised version of the Canon EOS R, the Canon EOS Ra is a full-frame mirrorless camera for photographers eager to capture high-quality images of everything from distant galaxies to dazzling star trails.
"I've done wide-angle astrophotography - landscape shots of the Milky Way - for a number of years," says Fergus. "Canon EOS Ra brings it to the next level."

This is great! I have always wanted to try astrophotography but have been worried that you need a lot of equipment to be able to take a good shot. Watching this video has opened my eyes as to what is possible with minimal gear and what you need if you are going to take pictures of deep sky objects. Learning not just about the EOS Ra but also how to capture the night sky generally is what makes this video truly amazing. Love the visuals and I am definitely going to take a trip to Calar Alto soon!
Buddy you can do literally everything that he said in this video with a standard dslr or slr. heck you can even photograph the milkyway with your phone. the quality is of course not as great.
all I can say is, you dont nead the eosra for doing astrophotgraphy. I started out with my ten year old Nikon D3100 with it's kit lens and was able to shoot the milkyway galaxy. what the eosra does better than your standard dslrs are, that it doesn't have the infrared filter (which you can by the way remove from any camera) that lets you see fainter obejcts that are in only visible in the infrared specturm.
what I wanna say is, dont buy the eosra if you want to do astrophotography, start out with the camera and lens you have,
The EOS Ra is a fucking scam. In this video they were idiotic enough to showcase a broadband target (Andromeda) which doesn't require a camera sensitive to hydrogen-alpha light - which is the whole point of EOS Ra. For the price of this stupid camera you could almost buy an entire astrophotography setup with a proper GoTo equatorial mount and telescope. The camera lens used in this video is also TWELVE THOUSAND fucking dollars. You can buy a comparable telescope that will give better image quality for $800 USD (AT80EDT) and it has a longer focal length.
This entire video is so incredibly stupid, $2500 camera + $12000 camera lens???
There’s dedicated astrophotography cameras that perform way better and are way better for way less money... I please hope you didn’t purchase this...
Any camera can be modded to do astrophotography. Only remove infrared filter with some care and knowledge.
@@creeper360bill pls calm down
this video is so fascinating it's almost therapeutic
Ah yes, that 400 mm lens...on sale in the US for a mere $11,999.00.
Righhhttt....
This is honestly one of the most helpful videos on Milhy way shots I have seen. thank you. ill be trying this soon with my Eos R
400 euros budget squad where you at?
And all this time I've only been shooting the milky way. So much to explore out there, but lots of expensive glass and other equipment too.

When it comes to nebula like Great Orion Nebula that you imaged, it's not about "4 times more infrared light" like you mentioned, but rather more H-Alpha (hydrogen, 656nm) line that is not blocked by IR-block filter of stock normal Canon.
Yep. More infrared wouldnt be better since infrared is normally cut out due to it coming through the scope or lens unfocused.
Don't want to be harsh and in all respects to Mr. Kennedy, I'm doing better colored images with my 1300d, an IDAS LPS Filter and my Tracking mount then he does with equipment worth more then my Car. With the right passionated guy this camera could be beast. But as for this video all i'm seeing is a great camera, a-lot good lenses and a Orion nebula that is so awfully off.

I can't believe i just watch full 30 min ad and some how feel inspired ! Would love see more ad like this one
That 15-35mm lens is amazing. It's sad that I'll never have enough money to be able to afford it 😞😢
A Dream which I always dreamed of ( astrophotography) ... Wish i could get my own Dslr some day 🙂
I can make like this for canon 90D I want like photos by camera canon 90D
hey there, awesome video and amazing photography! well done!
Can you let us know which app you used to check the milky way?
Thank you!
Fergus used Star Walk 2
@@CanonEurope Thank you!
The only thing preventing me is the price of all the equipment :( .....
Can we do normal photography with this. Because almost all dslr or mirrorless cameras have an infrared filters, this doesn't have that, good for astrophotography but what about normal photography?
It would be cool if this camera could be undiscontinued.
90s exposure with no star-trails????
IQ G this my question too
His Camera is rotating bruh
I am selling my house to buy all these gears.
Please re-release a new version of this camera! i want one!!
What app is that?
Looks like a brilliant camera!
Might have to chat with my bank manager for all that equipment...probably a second mortgage. Fantastic stuff though..
Canon is used mostly by us astrophotographers. I use a modified 600D myself. When the Ra was announced there was a few people in the community scratching their heads by this product. Though the more I think about it, the more I kind of get excited by it and want to try it myself one day.
Or you could buy a used D5300 for 200€, modify it yourself and have better images than you could ever dream about with a 600D ^^
I will be ordering my EOS Ra next week. I have the EOS 60Da but this new camera is full frame. I can’t wait.
An old 6d modified will be far better and far cheaper
Lucky you
absolutely loved this!!!
0:10 Celestron AVX for sure, my little beast to tracking stars :)
Why not just make full spectrum camera with switchable filter? Graphene enhanced CMOS is badly needed to increase sensitivity and it can detect deep infared even SWIR and MWIR.
I like the 10 second timer comment, and then you were like 4oo meters away lmao...So when you take these nice photos are they all 10 seconds or are you stacking multiple photo shots? Do you still use the Canon Ra? or is there a newer model? Keep up the grate work?
I have a 14yr old nikon d40 and still can get awesome milkyway shots.
The great advantage is on H alpha for the EOS Ra... H alpha wavelength is before the infrared light and is the strongest emission in emission nebula.... indeed infrared ligth is not well allowed because in many optical systems infrared light is not well focused as visible wavelengths causing bloated stars. Nice video.
Good combo of camera ad and instructional entertaining video! Loved it.
i always wanted to capture the milkway or the stars but my 1200d and its default 18-55 lens are not able do that :/
Dude just try it and dont cry that you have "bad" equipment
I’m really surprised he was able to use a white light there near the observatories. Usually they’re pretty particular about being sure you use red light.
Can anyone tell me which application was he using to track the galaxy on his phone ??
Try the star walk app
Photopills. I've been using it for a year now and it's pretty awesome.
Kevin Villapando its a paid app 🤦🏻♂️😫
Can you do this with an EOS R?
Great video Fergus. You've made me consider getting the Ra as soon as Xmas is out the way.
@Christiaan Baron Dude, can you shut up? There's a way of removing satellites from pictures, stop destroying the inspiration of people with overexaggerated statements.
@Christiaan Baron what?
Absolutely cracking video. One of Canons best in my opinion..
I love the part where we travel to Spain, hook up the equatorial mount, $14k lens and capture wonderful shots.
Joking aside, these astro version bodies should just be available to buy, I’d like to buy one for this photography
EOS R with a different filter stack from the looks of it but if you remove the filter stack of any modern full-frame you get 20-35 percentile more light and simply use whatever filter you need for application and or spectrum that you wish to capture.
I like the concept of the EOS Ra, but it is way too expensive in my opinion. It is essentially a dedicated astrophotography camera, so it is probably more cost effective to get a dedicated CMOS or CCD camera such as the ZWO cameras which are about half the price. Admittedly, you need a computer for these, but you can get wifi devices that enable you to use your phone or a tablet. Or if you have an old DSLR lying around, modify it yourself or have it done professionally. Modifying it yourself can be a bit tricky, but there are YT videos showing you how to do it. Having said all of this, you don't need a modified camera to do astrophotography. There are a lot of deep space objects that are not in the IR wavelength range, so if you are just starting out, a stock DSLR is probably the way to go, then upgrade to a dedicated astrophotography camera if you decide to get more serious.
Great video and those Andromeda and Nebulae shots were awesome :)
No built-in intervalometer? WTF, Canon?
i thought he used a built in one in the video
@@redetail yeah he did, this guy and the 18 people who gave him a thumbs up didn't watch the video apparently.
@@trceb the EOS R doesn't have a true intervalometer for photo stills. It will record a video clip with frames taken at a rate you can set, which is what this gentleman is doing.
I can't find info in the manual to tell the camera to take a series of exposures by itself. Where have I missed this info? Ideally a few minutes sub-frames.
Thank you sir this is video awesome
Damn.. So beautiful... But, when a new astro camera??? 😅
Is the EOS Ra exclusively an astrophotography camera?
Another point is knowing the wildlife. Like sounds they make and behavior. Fear not knowing what’s out there can cut short a night session if you start hearing noises you don’t know what they come from.
wow, how can you not get more views, this is sooo amazing. I do star photos also and let me tell you, it is not easy, I make videos also, you can check my channel and maybe find something you like. Thank you
Looks like I found my favorite, excellent.
Awesome video. Crystal clear explanation. Enjoyed watching every bit. You have got a new fan of yours. Keep it going. 😊
If he censored his license plate, why didn't he censor his face as well?
First i thought advertisement of Celestron. But then i saw the channel. 😂😂
Funny how the Volkswagen logo is blurred but not the Celestron one, lol
which app did you used to find milky way on your phone??
Fergus used Star Walk 2
I am now inspired to get into astrophotography
@Christiaan Baron that's what kappa sigma is for :)
@@julianshroff1 ikr
it has an average of 2500 satellites..why no photos?no video?we see the depths of space..We can't see 300 km...very interesting!..
you can see the moon with naked eye at 300 000 km, you can see orion nebula, at 1500 years light distance. you can see andromeda galaxies at 2.5 millions light years with naked eyes. but you can t see a small rock at 100 meters, you can t see a fly at 20 meters, you cant see a dust particule on your shoes. same for satellites. they are far too small to be pictured. But you can see the starlink satellites now. there is tons of videos and pictures on internet.
I would love to get my hands on this camera, currently running an 80D as I learn more about photography and slowly get into the field of astrophotography. My biggest question is how this camera, for such a large investment, handles regular photography scenarios with the heightened Ha sensitivity? Does it show on regular photos? Is it detrimental to non-astrophotography?
Hi @Xcron, the Canon EOS Ra can be used like an ordinary camera. However, as a consequence of its higher sensitivity to some infrared frequencies, some colours will look strange as it will capture colours in flowers and some man-made fibres, for example, that the unaided eye doesn't detect. Learn more about the EOS Ra's advanced features with our Canon astro photography expert Matteo La Torre: www.canon-europe.com/pro/stories/how-eos-ra-supercharges-astrophotography/
@@CanonEurope Okay, so it's not entirely recommended, as the extra income of red can throw off the natural colour balance a bit.
Thank you very much.
I'll do some more digging, I'd really like to see how much of a difference it makes in regular photography.
@@CanonEurope Can this extra spectrum of light be removed in post-processing? Or even an in-camera option for this?
Let's have a look.... Photo looks kinda meh... Then he shows an edited version
How is this camera in video mode to record live stars and ISS moving across the sky?
how do you search without a "finder telescope" for the objects to be observed?
as if this hobby was not expensive enough :x
How to drain your bank account with a overpriced camera
Beautiful.. stunning photos :)
So jealous of your Andromeda picture!!
I do something small astro photography with my powershot camera . Now I got an idea how professionally people are getting into this field with these gears.

Such a wonderful and informative video! Thank you for sharing

@@wesleyanismlucas8816 thanks
Great video, really enjoyed the delivery. But please can you explain why the Ra is so expensive when compared to the R?
Glad you enjoyed the video :). Very good question. The EOS Ra and the EOS R do share similar specs, however, the EOS Ra has a modified infrared sensor, so that you can bring out the reddish colour in Nebula. For astrophotography, it means the EOS Ra sensor will perform better than the EOS R.
stunning set of photos
Can you tell us which Celestron equatorial mount you're using?
Thanks!
All Celestron equatorial mounts are working perfect. They different with the load they can hold. I think he was using CGX.
He was using a AVX mount.
@@kas19932 The CGX is wayyyyyy bigger than the AVX
Any insights into which equitorial tracking mount is used in this video? I'm very much interested in pairing that up with my Canon 6D Mii

Love it Can you share how you mounted you canon gear to your Mount Please? I have a Canon EOS R3 with lenses from 15mm to500MM and a Sky Watcher EQM-35 Equatorial Mount and having issues mounting my camera to it. Thank you
Hi Bruce - we would suggest going to the @SkyWatcherTelescope team for help, but if you let us know what kind of problems you're facing we'll see if we can offer any useful suggestions based on our experience 👍
Thanks for sharing. I had the chance to see a rocket launch in 2018. Amazing experience. I shared a pretty fun video of the trip to my page.
Why is it unavailable to buy?
Im Just Wondering To Have Like That Camera Im Only Using My Phone For Astrophotography
Im Hoping Someone Give A Camera To Me☄️♥️
Over 1000$ extra for different filter setup and a minor firmware change? No thanks. Canon you can do better, much better. Easily. I don't know give me open source protocol how to control camera remotely, not some silly SDK, give me built-in advanced sequencer, give me FITS output maybe, give me more information, like sensor temperature, give me ability to name files automatically based on a time of acquisition or object I am capturing, not just random sequential numbers, maybe put them in separate directories, etc. etc. Make my life easier.
Meraviglioso bravissimo
I got the Ra, excellent camera indeed. Found out the timelapse mode with this video >< now I'm going to try it ASAP
Tag us if you post any of your pictures online!
Not surprised at this new model since Canon is the preferred DSLR of most Astrphotographers, myself included.
Love it
Great video
Nice, love the night sky.;
What rail did you attach to your big lens? I've been looking for a rail to attach to my 300mm 2.8
5:20 lol there's no raw capture when shooting without intervalometer?
Seriously amazing!
Awesome video! May I ask what the name of the music tracks on the video is?
Especially the track after 2:40

Amazing. I didn't know it was possible to have long exposures of 120s.
Joel G yup! There are people that can get 10 min single exposures, but they are using equatorial mounts and auto guiding.
There are cameras specially designed for astrophotograpy with exposures of 30min to hours.
