Nothing comes close to this game's feel...the attachment, the memories, the guilt and the helplessness watching a swarm of Shivans hunt down and destroy a squadron member as you weave in and out dodging the searing deathly beam cannons of two capital ships locked in hellish battle
I was a wee kid who didn't speak nor understood a word in English. This intro gave me creeps just solely from the atmosphere and the voice actor. It was amazing.
"Sir, it's going to be fine." "No it isn't!! You don't understand.. you weren't there!" The delivery of that gave me chills the first few times. Great voice acting, especially considering the time it was made.
I agree with Max Payne. This intro has the best voice acting I've heard in a video game - ever. It beats most top tier movie productions. I remember when I first got the game. This intro instantly sold me.
Years later this intro still gives me the chills and a sense of fear and trepidation. That NO other succeeding space games ever manage to, except for Freespace 2.
you are a rank and file pilot you are not the saviour of humanity you are not the chosen one you are not the one who changes destiny you are alone against a cosmic horror with the rest of humanity (and their friendly alien rivals) this game is living proof you do not need to be a special snowflake to experience one of the greatest stories ever told you are a simple speck of dust in such a galactic scale they do not make stories like this anymore
Descent: Freespace was the first game I bought myself (admittedly on recommendation from my stepfather), and I had ordered it when online ordering was a super awkward process. But it arrived a week later along with the cheap joystick I had also ordered. I will never forget this game nor its sequel, both were phenomenal for me at the time and absolutely defined my joy for Sci-fi for decades to come.
This was the first game that I finished in my whole life... It just amazing to watch again the intro, It makes me to remember when I just was 10 years old... I have never found another spaceship game like Freespace for computer or other consoles... It was a real air combat simulation...
I still love this intro, I remember playing it in my old celeron PC back in the 2000's when I was a teenager. I would love to see a CGI remake of this scene. Just jumping to the current FS2 scene.
many years ago i'll played FS1 and 2, and i'll can say than this game is one of the best game ever played, Wing commander and Xwing vs Tie fighter can match this game, but not in the epicness of FS, this game deservers to be redone, remastered and properly finished with Freespace 3, heck even Homeworld formerly are getting the third and final game, FS deserves to return to life.
...It's been possible for almost two decades with Freespace Open, which is still being updated to this day. It's been a long time since I played FSO, but to play the first one, I think you'll need the game assets from your original discs or from the Freespace Battlepack on GOG.
Not really. This was made by Volition, Descent was made by Parallax Software. Both were published by Interplay though. The official story was that they had to call it something other than just "Freespace" because there was an existing piece of software with the same name. No doubt Interplay, which published both games, was happy to put the name of an existing IP on the new franchise. After all, they were both sci-fi games about flying ships. An early story concept involved tracking down the protagonist of Descent so that he could help fight the Shivans but this was dropped. Freespace is entirely its own thing.
Why it’s called “Descent: Freespace”? I never understood what “Descent" stood for in title, because as far as I know, Freespace is no way connected with “Descent” games Trilogy
You're right, it doesn't. Apparently, there was some legal trouble with just calling the game, "Freespace." They tossed "Descent" in there just to avoid getting pooch screwed by lawyers.
Answer: There was a disk utility program also out around the same time called "Freespace" ... I know, it wasn't even a game! Nobody on the Volition development team wanted that, I assure you. It was purely an Interplay thing.
Also, if you can believe it - someone tried suing Mike over the company name Volition! All because they had the domain name registered which was why the website was volition-inccom. And all this was long before the internet was saturated! Crazy, I know!
Freespace was originally supposed to be part of the Descent Trilogy, being set in the same universe, but rather than being that One Special Pilot with a special craft, in Freespace, you were a random fighter pilot that was part of the military. The idea of it being part of the Descent Universe was scrapped, but the tag "Descent" was retained both as a marketing tactic (Descent was rather popular at the time), and because of a Utility program called "Freespace". Notably, once Freespace 2 came out, Volition was able to drop the "Descent" tag, so it was just "Freespace 2".
Except the ME story didn't suck, only the ending and final motivation for the reapers sucked. Freespace never got to explain the motivation of the Shivans.
@@crowsbridge It does explain their motivation at the end of FS1. Shivans make sure no crazy genocidal race goes around wiping out everything. Mass Effect started off nice but the entire 3rd game is just a massive clusterfuck with the ending honestly being one of its lesser problems.
what kind of soldier loses his shit like that. You don't hear astronauts ever raising their voice or breaking protocol no matter how stressful things get.
Astronauts don't generally encounter cosmic horrors that treat your best fighters like insects. Also as a former 911 dispatcher, I can tell you even the strongest people can break in life or death situations. It's not ideal but it's human.
By the time the video ended, I realized my hair was raised and I felt cold, just like I did in '98.

The BEST VOICE acting EVER no contest:))))

Man soooooo many memories playing that epic game.

Absolutely! Your an every-man going up against mysterious, xenophobic reapers in space practically. You're no saviour, you fight or die trying
10/10

I avenged you... Pilot.
It's a delivery that simply never loses it's edge.
I just hope we will see a UE5 version of Freespace & BattleZone !
*THAT* truly would be *GLORIOUS* !
How awesome these two games were. Still got goosebumps like back then :) Still hoping for a sequel and a series or film :)

If it's any consolidation for the fallen pilot, the Galactic Terran Alliance got some pretty righteous payback

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE BRING BACK THIS GAME IN A CURRENT PLATFORM!
@@makemebetter9977OMG! Thanks!
That blood curdling screen echoes in my child hood, the only things I remember from this trailer was the logo of a face and the pilot screaming.
I would love to get the original Freespace working on the newer OS. Such an epic game!

still sooooo good.
awesome

So... One thing that was never clear to me: despite sharing the name, did this game have any connection to the Descent series with MD1032?
Not really. This was made by Volition, Descent was made by Parallax Software. Both were published by Interplay though.

Damn..... what a story

It kills me that mass effect straight up copied the plot from this game and nobody noticed lol
I noticed
No they didn't because if they did the story in Mass Effect wouldn't suck so bad. FreeSpace's story is vastly superior in every sense of the word.
Except the ME story didn't suck, only the ending and final motivation for the reapers sucked. Freespace never got to explain the motivation of the Shivans.

Unless some shivans showed up and massacred the rest of your unit
Say you have never met or seen a soldier, without saying it
It's more entertaining this way, relax
