I agree, first day trim is to set it up to look better as it continues to grow in. Get someone to set it up and line it up so you keep those lines clean yourself at home. Second trim I call taking out the Amish, cleaning it up, giving it some shape. Taking out the fluffyness and uncontrolled shape it gives. Then third and there after is to give the shape once you have enough growth and keeping the shape.
I will be 11 weeks Monday, no trim. My beards looking really good, nice & full, I am holding out until I hit 3 months, then I will decide what I'm gonna do. Great video.
February 19th will be my 6 month mark. (3 days away) My barber is closed on Wednesday’s and I’m leaving to go out of town tomorrow night so I’m getting my first trim tomorrow before I leave. This is the longest I’ve ever let my beard grow so hopefully he doesn’t screw it up. Keeping the length but getting it cleaned up. Love the videos!
Drew's Obsessions have done some videos for Beardbrand and you can clearly see that he does not have genetics of a beard god. Still has insane beard because he gave it the time it required
Great info! I’m 7 months in on my Yeard and have had a couple of trims by a barber. The first time I wasn’t clear with him and got too much taken off the mustache. Lesson learned on always communicate clearly with what you want.
HeyAdamRuns question is, how DID you communicate the right way??? Last year my barbers constantly effed up my beard with each haircut session, so this year I've not allowed them to touch it at all. When the time comes, how do you tell them to not take anything off and just tidy it???
Nice! I’d love to see a video about when the beard leaves your face. That may be the most awkward phase! Which way should you comb the hair under your face? Forward or backwards?
Oh that will absolutely be a big topic for me to cover. The hair is just start to creep off my face and brushing/combing is starting to get really awkward really fast. - Jack
Jack, wanted to let you know you have become my Guru for growing my first beard. Thanks for all the awesome tips and walk throughs, also thanks for discussing and explaining many of my concerns and obstacles I have previously succumbed to many times before. I am into my second week, and feeling great, even pick up beard kit with some great organic oils and balm. I'm doing the growth timeline by week like you to document my progress. Hopefully, I can share out when I get to my destination. Keep up the great vids, and thanks for your help again.
When trying to grow it out for a whole year how many times a year should I trim within that 12 month period and what should the distance be between each trim ?
Ive always trimmed my own beard. They have cheap beard trimmers at walmart and I spent a good couple hours research tips and tricks to trimming my beard. Thats actually how I found beard brand, and been watching ever since. But for me personally I grew my beard out for a month and a half before I trimmed it. That month was really tough but i got through. I have one of those beards where I have 3 different patches that grows at three different rates. So i trim my beard down to the lowest length, which is my right cheek. Every once in a while I'll grow it out a month to get the length of my weakest part out but I mostly keep it short until my beard can grow at a single rate. Keep up with the great vids.
Oh for sure! Trimming your beard is totally fine! I've actually trimmed my own beard a few times before I grow this current one for the Yeard series. Glad you liked the video! - Jack
This is what I have been looking for. 3 months in with no trimming at all. I know now what to tell my stylist what I want to do. I have excepted the yeard challenge.
Hands down the best beard series I've seen. I'm almost two months into growing mine and last year when I first invested in my beard and beardbrand products, the local barbers convinced me (on every haircut trip) to "trim my beard cos it looked messy" and they would constantly trim my tache and beard too much, it was so aggravating as I couldn't understand how to make THEM understand I was trying to simple GROW MY BEARD out! All I wanted was a little trim but nope. Always going wild with the trimmers! Anyway, that's why this year I've completely avoided letting them near my beard, I just get my hair done and leave lol! But that's obviously left me wondering when and how to actually ask for the tidy up this time around (specially worried bout split ends etc.) So this video helped a buttload. Thank you Jack and beard on bruh!
Hey, thank you, man! I really appreciate the kind words! Based on what you've said, I totally understand why you're avoiding getting trimmed up at any shops. That really blows, finding the perfect barber for your beard is way tougher than most guys expect. Really glad you enjoyed the video, beard on, dude! - Jack
Here's a question with a bit of history. First and foremost, I have never grown a beard until now. I am about 5 weeks in. The problem that I am facing is that in spite of using a beard wash and a cream on a daily basis my beard still itches like crazy. I have really sensitive, dry skin. I don't like anything touching my face as it is. Am I wasting my time? I am about to shave it all off.
I'm not doing the yeard thing, I'm just growing my beard. I haven't had it trimmed before, just done the neck line and cheek lines. Should i get it trimmed? I would say it's about the athletic beard length but not trimmed at all.
I'm 19 ,and my beard is pretty dense but now I'm facing issues like beard fall, i have not shaved yet any tips . You guys are awesome and a inspiration to all Young guys who wants to grow beard . Thank u
I trimmed mine really short 2 weeks before Christmas... big mistake, and took that day as the 1 week mark. Currently in the 8th week and made the mistake of not communicating well with my barber and ended up cuting the mustache too high and also "cleaning" the lower lip. Won't start over again, but that will take a couple weeks to catch up. Thanks for the vids and keep em coming! Seen some pics of my journey and it's amazing how the face changes. Already looking forward hitting the 13 weeks mark
Thanks a lot, man. Just trimmed up my jaw line and was sweating bullets while doing so. It's been about 3/4 months that I've been growing it out and under the jawline it was sticking out all awkwardly. Also my chin was a bit uneven. By my logic, I figured that if I let my cheek hairs catch up with my trimmed jawline that my beard would look better after the year. Needed some some opinions from the experts and I got them, thanks for posting this. Always staying subscribed and informed.
"You can't trim your way to a big beard". I understand the temptation to trim, but if your goal is a big beard, my opinion is that you should abstain from trimming as much as possible, at least until you reach your goal length. If you are going big, it's better to leave the neck and sides imo. The neck will be covered anyway and letting it grow adds more density. The sides will be weighed down by length if you give them time to get past the scruffy look. Like you say with trimming the neckline too high, it might look better at first but if your goal is a big beard, it will ultimately remove density.
Brandon Lee I've let my beard grow long only once and I trimmed my neck. Past a certain point it starts to feel ridiculous to lift up hair to shave hair off that's not even visible. Next time I grow (probably sometime this year) I'll be leaving the neck and only carving a cheekline and shaping below the ear. I'm never satisfied with the job I (or barbers for that matter) do carving the neck plus I wanted more density with my last beard but I kept trimming the neck, and I can now see how dumb that was.
I did the same thing with my mustache and my barber! I regret it but I’m just going to let it grow back. I’m almost at my 6 month mark with no trimming of the beard at all. I just want the athletic beard but it’s still way too patchy I think.
Great as always, I'm growing with you and my beard seems to grow at the same pace, so the tips are as timed as a ducks hatching routines! Keep it up Jack!
I’m at 6 months going strong, only trimming I’ve needed to do was along the neck line and the sides of my face to prevent my beard from growing outwards and wide instead of just down
ThaJoka98FTW hey bro how do u know how much to take off? I'm about 2 months in and haven't trimmed anything off the beard, solely lining up the cheeks and neck and that's been it. But I'm worried about split ends, any idea as to what I should do? Should I just take off odd hairs with the scissors or go all around with a trimmer?
All I really do for a trim is the cheek lines, neck lines, and taking off split ends or just odd pieces of hair coming out. You don't want to take a whole lot off from the actual beard, just enough that it looks dense and not whispy. When I line up the sides, thats really more of a personal preference and I make sure it is almost a straight line connecting from my sideburns.
I appreciate your thoughts and video. I'm looking to start growing out my beard although I'm very hesitant about letting it go and not touching it. I've had a mustache and a semi chinstrap style beard for a few years now with thin, wispy, patchy spots around my upper cheeks. I would like to go for a pointed, duckbill, or whatever god of war style beard is called. Where do I find tips, videos, or instruction to accomplish this? Or should I just let it go for awhile? I just don't want to look unkempt or strangled. Thanks
The mystic 13 weeks milestone, congratulations, interesting see the mustache growing on top of the lips and the two patch sides of the chin slowly filling up. Btw, did your know anything about dermaroller to stimulate beard growth on patch areas?
Hey jack one honest answer from your side do you really go for a professional beard parlour before every Video cause it looks so damn perfect everytime..!! Reply would be appreciated 😀
I want to grow my mustache out but like yours it is going onto my lips. I tried using some of beardbrand 's mustache wax to push my mustache hairs to the sides but there isn't enough hold. Is there a mustache wax that anyone can recommend to hold my stubborn mustache out of my mouth while it grows out?
Just keep letting it grow if you are growing it out for a year. I have heard of many bad stories of barbers cutting too much and basically taking months of growth off. If you don't mind that then a skilled barber would be best but ultimately you should be able to trim your own beard.
I have taken up the yeard challenge (Just crossed 6 months). But since I wear a formal shirt everyday due to work my beard tends to curl where it meets the collar. I have started buttoning up all the way up to the collar which kinda helps but is a very unorthodox look when not wearing a tie. Just wanted to know if you have any thoughts or suggestions on that.
Hardest thing ever was/is finding a barbershop they can handle beards . Wish you guys did like a list of recommended barber shops. They all say they can handle them but you will end up with a chopped up beard. Thanks
Jealous of that beard, friend Still sticking with my own yeard, I'm around the week 5 stage and starting to get disenfranchised with it like you said about the 30 day mark (I started on Christmas Eve actually) What's your best advice, just letting it grow now? My moustache is similar to yours, but with less cheek growth and larger chin patches...
Heathen of the Old Gods, I think if anyone is going to grow a beard that that need to make at least a 90 day commitment. 90 days give you a real good idea of what you’re gonna look like with a beard. Anything short of that and you’re waisting your time.
We're actually based in Austin, Texas. Carlos Costa who is part of the team lives in England though and he handles the filming of the barbershop series, so that's why the barbershop videos are mostly English. BUT, if you want to have a beard consolation, send some photos over to style@beardbrand.com, we'll give you some tips and advice - Jack
Hey man great tips! Im actually about a month behind you but I think Im gonna try the years now! Haven’t cut anything off so might as well give it a shot!
I’ll be at the 6 month mark on February 19th and I haven’t had a trim yet. I’ll definitely have to swing by my barber in a few weeks! He probably thinks I’m dead seeing as though I haven’t had a haircut in quite awhile either! Hahaha
Dude i watched your other vid on how to grow out thr hair on your neck and use the two fingers above the adams apple and thats exactly what ive been missing out on all these years ive kinda had a face beard and soon as it started looking bad id trim it.your beard in this vid is awesome and exactly what im wanting to do.my only question is an issue with my hair on my neck grows crazy.like in several different directions.is that normal?will it look crazy like that when it gets long?or will it tame some with length?thanks
I am now in my 8th week still did not trim anything. I have some thin hairs on cheek but not so bad. Do you recommend to leave it still several weeks before trim. Will it cheek beard get thicker?
Hey man the best thing you can do is just leave it and let it grow out. Sometimes time will fill in those spots that are a little thinner. After a few more weeks you will have a better idea on how you can style your beard to get the most out of it. -Mack
@@Beardbrand Thank you for comment! Do you have email or something where I can contact you, maybe send you some photos of my beard so you can give me opinion about my beard or any suggestion? I would really appreciate it! :)
Beardbrand and this is why you (jack) are my favorite from bear brand because not only are you 2 years older than me but you also reply to comments , have a nice day and thanks for the reply
Definitely! I base my search for a great barber on what Eric Bandholz says: A great barber should: 1. Be passionate about their work 2. Be able to communicate well with you 3. Provide a good experience 4. Push your limits (so that you're not afraid to try new styles) - Jack
My chin and mustache come in really fast and thick but my sides arnt quite as thick as I'd like. However I do realize waiting for it to fill out will help hide that. I'm at 13 weeks also and have been considering a shaping and getting the split ends clipped. I'm just worried if they go for a shape the sides of my face will look patchy
I disagree with everyone saying not to even trim/shape the beard. I don't see the point in even making a video series out of that. I'm gonna get way more out of this to see how you upkeep a beard with a lot of growth to help me out with my beard.
@beardbrand can you show how to avoid the ugly chin wave?? I have that wave that follow my chin line and than the wave change line and goes up...terrible! I hope in some tips by you! Thanks and BEARD ON from Italy!!
I envy you dude!! We have the same time growing the beard and mine doesn't look half as full or thick as yours... i love your videos btw. Keep it going!
Went for my first beard shaping/trim in six months and I’m so disappointed. I made it clear that I don’t want any length taken off, just “cleaned up” and the lady took so much length off, and the sides are so uneven. Very discouraging
Hey Jack, I think you might have missed the point of the "athletic" beard from Jeff. I think his point was to create a highly trimmed beard to your preference and strengths. Anyway, no matter. Your beards looking nice man. Keep on growing.
Ugh, fine. I’ll stop trimming it down and just let it grow past the awkward phase in between a good short beard and a beard with enough length to weigh down the sides. Damnit, I’m gonna look weird for a little bit haha
With a square shaped face, you may want to wear a more rounded beard. It can be long. but to have a square shaped beard and a square shaped face, it can end up looking a bit weird. - Jack
I like your videos and seeing videos like these keeps me on the journey. I am going for a yeard, but I had some early trims even by a barber, and I regret it. I even did a chin curtain for a while. I regret it. Some of my beard areas were really slow growing and I trimmed these areas thinking there were patches, when actually hair would grow there. You can't trim your way to a big beard.
First of all, thanks for watching man, your awesome comments seriously do mean a lot to me. It's nice to know that there are other guys going through the yeard journey right now! - Jack
That's definitely the official rules, but to keep the series entertaining and informative as possible, I'm gonna try to do at least 2 trims (NOT for length) but to just get the dead ends cut off to encourage healthy continued growth. - Jack
Funny how I watched this 2 years ago now my beard doubled in density from age 22-24 and is down to my chest. Thanks Jack!!
Must be nice. I couldn't grow a beard until 30.
When do you think is the best time to get a beard trim?after washing it.. First day beard, second, doesn't matter?
I agree, first day trim is to set it up to look better as it continues to grow in. Get someone to set it up and line it up so you keep those lines clean yourself at home. Second trim I call taking out the Amish, cleaning it up, giving it some shape. Taking out the fluffyness and uncontrolled shape it gives. Then third and there after is to give the shape once you have enough growth and keeping the shape.

I don't believe we've ever done a video on derma rolling.
Maybe we'll have to make one soon!
- Jack
Would it be possible to come in for a beard consultation? How far are you guys from Ilford (East London) 🤔
We're actually based in Austin, Texas. Carlos Costa who is part of the team lives in England though and he handles the filming of the barbershop series, so that's why the barbershop videos are mostly English. BUT, if you want to have a beard consolation, send some photos over to style@beardbrand.com, we'll give you some tips and advice
- Jack
Beardbrand thanks so much Jack, I'll send some through now, loving your videos btw good and honest stuff 👌🏼
Hahaha
I love this guys hair cut. What would I ask for at the barbers?
Hastings He did an episode on it a few weeks ago.
Ask for the super sexy jack milicho
Dude i watched your other vid on how to grow out thr hair on your neck and use the two fingers above the adams apple and thats exactly what ive been missing out on all these years ive kinda had a face beard and soon as it started looking bad id trim it.your beard in this vid is awesome and exactly what im wanting to do.my only question is an issue with my hair on my neck grows crazy.like in several different directions.is that normal?will it look crazy like that when it gets long?or will it tame some with length?thanks
I like your Mario and Yoshi sweater
Oh snap....the beard's looking great! Good info, Jack, and entertaining, too. You're a natural in front of a camera. Keep it up!
Thanks Fleotus! I really appreciate the kind words, I definitely feel less awkward with each new video I film.

When I need to start using beard oil or balm?
I'd say at least 2 weeks into growing the hair
- Jack
I haven't done anything to my beard or change any thing in my diet and my beards almost filled in after 2 months of growing I'm almost 18
Great vid Jack keep it up
Will do!
- Jack
I am now in my 8th week still did not trim anything. I have some thin hairs on cheek but not so bad. Do you recommend to leave it still several weeks before trim. Will it cheek beard get thicker?
Hey man the best thing you can do is just leave it and let it grow out. Sometimes time will fill in those spots that are a little thinner. After a few more weeks you will have a better idea on how you can style your beard to get the most out of it.

@@Beardbrand Thank you for comment! Do you have email or something where I can contact you, maybe send you some photos of my beard so you can give me opinion about my beard or any suggestion? I would really appreciate it! :)
I am at a month and looks like my cheeks are coming in better than ever before, although still SUPER weak
Honestly this the best length of your beard in your whole year , it looks the best and you look like Superman when he had a beard
After the series, I'll probably go back to something like this (after I shave everything off, of course)
- Jack
Beardbrand and this is why you (jack) are my favorite from bear brand because not only are you 2 years older than me but you also reply to comments , have a nice day and thanks for the reply
It’s not hard to put a guard on a trimmer and trim it down
Any tips on how to find a barber ??
Definitely! I base my search for a great barber on what Eric Bandholz says:
A great barber should:
1. Be passionate about their work
2. Be able to communicate well with you
3. Provide a good experience
4. Push your limits (so that you're not afraid to try new styles)

This dude could easy be the host for a new generation of “The Twighlight Zone”
I disagree with everyone saying not to even trim/shape the beard. I don't see the point in even making a video series out of that. I'm gonna get way more out of this to see how you upkeep a beard with a lot of growth to help me out with my beard.
Beard is looking awesome Jack. 👍👍
Thanks, man!
- Jack
@beardbrand can you show how to avoid the ugly chin wave?? I have that wave that follow my chin line and than the wave change line and goes up...terrible! I hope in some tips by you! Thanks and BEARD ON from Italy!!
I envy you dude!! We have the same time growing the beard and mine doesn't look half as full or thick as yours... i love your videos btw. Keep it going!
Dope shirt Sir!
Thank ya! Love me some Super Mario World.
- Jack
Went for my first beard shaping/trim in six months and I’m so disappointed. I made it clear that I don’t want any length taken off, just “cleaned up” and the lady took so much length off, and the sides are so uneven. Very discouraging
Mah dute is back again... Beard looks on point 👌 oh! By the way I would love to see that video of you getting a beard trim!
Rafail_ Nikou aye mah dute you also look on ponit
Do u always get your moustache cut short all the time or that is just your terminal lengh
It's actually turning out to not be terminal, it's just growing very very slow.
- Jack
Beardbrand oh ok thx
Great job dude, I’m following along closely coming in nice👍
This guy was so bothered about his beard he completely disregarded his damn eyebrows
Hey Jack, I think you might have missed the point of the "athletic" beard from Jeff. I think his point was to create a highly trimmed beard to your preference and strengths. Anyway, no matter. Your beards looking nice man. Keep on growing.
Oh definitely! I was should've clarified that I meant more in terms of Jeff's "athletic" beard visually. No worries!
- Jack
Man, you've got a glorious beard
I'm on week 12. No trim til yeard, not with the butchers they call barbers around here :)
Beards looking good!!
Thanks, man!
- Jack
Can ANYONE please recommend a good barber in the Atlanta area that can trim and help me maintain my beard? Been growing since October
Hy,what model of beard i coose?
That’s your week 13 nice 👍, I’m on week two feeling pretty hopeful
Ugh, fine. I’ll stop trimming it down and just let it grow past the awkward phase in between a good short beard and a beard with enough length to weigh down the sides. Damnit, I’m gonna look weird for a little bit haha
Shane Jampole haha I feel you on that
Nice sweater
Is long beard ( faded side burns) for a square shaped face good to go or not ???
pls help me, thnxxxx
With a square shaped face, you may want to wear a more rounded beard. It can be long. but to have a square shaped beard and a square shaped face, it can end up looking a bit weird.
- Jack
thnx a lot 👍
How can you go a full year without a trim? I’m guessing you like eating your mustache hair. Looking good Jack!
I want that 13 week beard!
I do miss this length
- Jack
Jack it's getting amazing 👍👍
Hey Gandalf, liked ur yeard .keep on growing .love u .....
Thanks man!
- Jack
Jack my beard has 2 patches on my lower lip that just don’t grow in. The longest I’ve grown it for is 3 months. Any tips for filling in this part?
If you're going for a yeard, do not trim at all. By definition, a yeard is untrimmed for a year.
That's definitely the official rules, but to keep the series entertaining and informative as possible, I'm gonna try to do at least 2 trims (NOT for length) but to just get the dead ends cut off to encourage healthy continued growth.
