You're the only one on RUclips that knows how to make hot dog chili. If you don't add the water it might as well be a sloppy joe on a hot dog. This is the way I make mine. Great recipe. And it goes a lot further. Have a good one
Thanks 🙏 I appreciate that.
I love that kind of chili on hot dogs! I'm going to make that the next time I serve them at church. Thanks!
Let me know how you and they like it
Love some homemade chili. That goes good on nachos as well. Football season is here. Looking forward to a good year, hopefully. Have a great week.
Yes that would be really good on fries or nachos. Yes I am super pumped for football man. I can't wait.
Wow I like how you make chili sauce and putting onions and garlic into the food processor. It looks amazing! I’m gonna copy it but I’m gonna add cinnamon and cocoa powder. Like a Cincinnati style chili.
Yeah give it a go! I like that Cincinnati style too. Always wanted to try it on spaghetti noodles!
That recipe is awesome!! Best I've seen so far! Can't wait to make this and thanks for sharing
Thanks so much! Thanks for your nice comment!
Look at that gorgeous kitchen! We also make a totally different chili for hot dogs, than our "regular" chili, but I love every kind of chili imaginable (and I make about 5 kinds!). That is one fine cast iron dutch oven full of chili Ronnie! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful and blessed day ---Stacy 😍❤
Thanks so much Stacy! I really like chili too. I love chili beans too but they don't like me haha. I got a recipe that I made called Chili Bean casolrole! I will have to share it soon. Have a good one.
Glad you got her done! Looks yummy!
Thanks so much. It was really good. Even had some leftover to free 😀
Yummy my kids love chili cheese dogs and I'll definitely be trying your recipe. Thanks
Thanks, let me know how you like it if you do!
Mighty fine looking chilli ya whooped up there Mr. Ronnie! Looked mighty tasty to me! Have a great week buddy!
Thanks CB, it was really good. Everyone seemed to really like it at our church function!
Great chili it works great with ground pork too. My wife can't eat beef.
Yes pork sounds good with it. Thanks for trying it out! Feel free to share it.
Oh my that looks good! Added to my food playlist 🙂👏
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that.
I think i have found my for ever recipe. Hoppefully I can canned it.
I hope you enjoyed it!
Ronnie, my wife was impressed with your hot dog sauce. Hot dogs are a big deal here in West Virginia and that is pretty much the same way we make our sauce other than a few different spices. Sauce in the south seems to be more like chili and beans style sauce than the kind you made. She told me to tell you great job!!!
I honestly didn't know that. All my life I tried to figure out how ppl got the chili so then. I thought about putting it in the food processor after it cooked but that would be a big mess. I just had the idea one day to put the meat in water and it made it think but still looked and tasted like chili lol. I didn't follow anyone else recipe or anything. I'm glad I was on to something lol. It's just how I always wanted my chili for hot dogs to be. Honestly, just regular chili is not big here. When we say chili in my house or family, we mean meat and seasoning and yes it's usually chunky. With beans we call that chili beans. It usually has stew tomatoes in that. That would be how we in our family separate the two. I'm glad your wife liked it. Thanks Pat. That made my day.
when im in WV i try to stop by hillbilly hotdogs in lesage wv, i think they have a huntington location as well but not as cool as the original place in lesage.
This is recipe I have been searching for.. thank you for posting this, I finally know I have a chili that will not be a “ hope this taste good this time”.
That is awesome! I am glad you like it so much. Please feel free to share it on your social media, it helps spread the word!
Interesting to mince the garlic and onion... bet that really spreads a real good flavor throughout the Chili.
Hope that Classic yellow really helped the flavor! Great recipe and execution Brother... Cheers
That classic mustard gives it a slight vinegar flavor and the bite from the mustard. Yeah, the mincing of the onion and garlic is really more about presentation so it is really fine in the sauce or that is my reason for doing it. You know I am not a professional haha. I just share what I do and what I know. I am sure it does help spread it around too.
Triumph Screen Printing Thanks for sending Ronnie that Mustard. Brandon your a hell of a guy.
Oh dang!!! That looks good Ronnie, I sure enough like a loose chili on my dogs!!! Good share brother definitely gonna get your recipe!! Dan
Thanks so much Dan! I like a loose chili also!
You ought to change the name to Home in the Dang Sticks hahaha. Just kidding but that would be funny!
Thanks Dan. I like loose meat chili as well! Glad you liked it, buddy. Give it a try sometime and let me know what you think.
Yep, gotta try this now! It looks delicious 😋!
Thanks. Let me know if you like it!
I’ve been looking for that very consistency in chili for hot dogs. Thanks
Let me know how you like it!
Dang, that looks awesome. I've been making (bowl) chili for years, but now I've gotta try this for my chili dogs. Awesome video, my man!
Let me know how you like it! Thanks for your comment.
Excellent hot dog chili, Thank You.

Nice! I was just talking to someone yesterday about chili cheese hotdogs... I like this chili sauce recipe a lot. Subscribed. I might try this on one of my upcoming videos.
Give it a shot and let me know how you like it! I'd love some feedback.
Awesome my friend. Thanks I shared it to DIYDarks Facebook channel so he will check it out. Great video thanks again your getting us food Junked!!!!
Thanks Calvin and thanks for thinking of me for this Dutch Oven Wars challenge. Maybe one day I can do it outside!
Love chili like that on my hotdogs. Yum. 😊👍
Yes me too. It turned out great, of course, I have been making it this way for many years. I just now got around to making a video on it haha.
Thank you for this video!! I grew up on chili like this for hot dogs but never learned how to make it. That water is key… making it now and I might use a little less water next time, but it smells incredible! I used jalapeño mustard for a little extra heat too 😋 Thanks, subscribed!
Thanks so much! Yes the water is the key to the texture. Yea feel free to play around with the ingredients and make it your own. I actually add a few more things in mine too.
haha hey now I dont live under rock and haven't met him yet! jk glad to see you back on the Tube! We love Chili, for sure going to try and make this and tag you!
I know it, I was just joking with Ole Calvin about that haha. Y'all and I do share a lot of the same friends though. Yeah try it and see what ya think👍
Now that looks good! Love that kind of chilli on my hotdogs. I bet you can tell by the smell that it’s not hormel haha👍🏻🇺🇸
Man if it was hormel you wouldn't make it far from your home hahahah. Thanks buddy!
Hello! Sent here by our Friend Calvin's Corner.
Thanks so much!
Yum! About how long did it take for the chili to cook to that consistency?
I'm sure it's different for everyone depending on what they like. Just wondering about a ballpark time.
I can't wait to try this! Thank you
Once you add the water in at the beginning, you stir it abs it breaks up to this texture at the beginning. Then I cook it down on a low simmer for about an hour and that evaporates the moisture which allows it to thicken up. If you want it even better, put it the refrigerator, then reheat it on the stove the next day or in a crockpot by adding a little water. It’s even better then!
@@SouthernFoodJunkie Thank you so much!
Anytime
So weird that I was literally thinking I think I want to make a chili sauce for some hot dogs soon but have never made it before so I was going to have to look up a recipe ! Now I know what I will try when I do it :) This is perfect !! Looks delicious. Thanks for sharing :)
You might could alter it to a instapot recipe? Lol worth s try. Give this one a try and let me know if you like it. I appreciate it Mel!
I like your video on chili dog sauce , it looks good. I don't care for the music in the background.
Thanks. I rarely use music anymore.
Subbed. Making this right now.
Thanks 🙏 I hope you enjoy it!
@@SouthernFoodJunkie It was fantastic on hotdogs! Had it on baked potatoes tonight. It was outstanding!

looks awesome!! just seen your channel and i love it!! new follower/supporter here and hit the bell!! i love to BBQ an cook!
Thanks for stopping by! I really appreciate it.
Great!
Thanks
Yes sir this is the way I like my chili. I don't care for cumin. So could you replace that with more chili powder or what do you suggest? I'm going to make this. I appreciate you sharing.
To be honest, many people believe chili powder to be just ground up chili's but it is actually a mixture of spices which includes cumin. It doesn't have enough cumin for me so that is why I add the extra. I think the cumin is a vital part of the chili flavor but everyone's taste is different. You could certainly delete the extra though and add in more chili powder and you wouldn't taste it as much. In this video, I actually added a lot more chili powder than my recipe calls for. One was because of me trippling the recipe, the other was because I read my own dang recipe wrong haha. It turned out really good though. Give it a try and see what you think. Feel free to make the adjustments like you want.
A lot of my family likes chili on their hotdogs. I can take it or leave it. That sure looks just like the hotdog chili mom buys in the grocery store sometimes. Maybe I should print out that recipe and let mom try it sometime instead of buying from the store.
It sure is good and way better than store bought. Tell her to give it a try!
Oh yeah looks yummy nummy goodness
Haha thanks buddy!
Your Recipe for Hot Dog Chili is delicious! The texture is perfect, for ladling over a couple of grilled Hot Dogs...
Thank you!
Hey thanks for taking the time to come back and comment! I’m glad you liked it. Please share with your friends and on your social media networks!! Thanks again.
Yummm.... Ok so now I have to go home and eat plain ol store bought hot dog chili on mine tonight and it won't be the same after seeing this. Lol. Gonna have to check out recipe. ~Dawn
Try it out and let me know how you like it!
Hey Ronnie!!! How are you? I follow you on instagram but I stay off social media as much as possible these days. I was looking for a hotdog chili recipe and found yours. Made it yesterday and it's very good. It will be a keeper recipe. Hope all is well and look forward to watching more of your videos. Take care!!
Hey I really appreciate that. I really like it myself too. Thanks for the awesome comment!
Hey Ronnie. How are yall doing? Just wanted to tell you that I have made this recipe two more times since I tried it first. I did try another recipe also but it wasn't as good as your's. Wanted you to know that we are still enjoying your recipe. Thanks again for it. Take care and be safe.
Thanks so much. I truly appreciate it! I am glad you are enjoying it and it makes me happy to know someone likes it! Stay safe and have a great weekend.
The best part of the video is the Gamecock water cup.
Heck yeah! Go Gamecocks 🤙
That looks hella good Ronnie I can just taste it now... mmm
Thanks Spongie, it pretty dang good lol.
😋👍🏾
Thanks
Saw your gamecock cup and after this passed weekend. How Was Them GAMECOCKS
Heck yeah! I was screaming like a little girl lol! Thanks
I really do like this easy recipe ..thank you ...... (Plz lower the background music a bit)
Thanks so much and I will try to lower the music too. Thanks
Simmer Down.
😎
Summer Donna...😎
Water is also the secret ingredient in my sloppy joe recipe.
I can see where that would make a great Sloppy Joe!
Our favorite hot dog chili is Cincinnati style, but instead of gathering dozens of ingredients, I buy a prepared spice mix at the grocery. 1.5 lbs if lean ground beef, a 6 oz. can of tomato paste, and 5 cups of water. Like your recipe you just dump it all in the pot, beat it with a fork to separate the meat, then a low simmer for a couple of hours.
I've never tried the Cincinnati style. I saw it eaten over spaghetti noodles. Sounds good. I think it has clove in it? I would like to try it. Thanks.
Southern Food Junkie Clove, cinnamon, and some recipes have a tiny bit of bittersweet chocolate. We used to live just across the river from Cincy and learned to love the stuff. Put it over spaghetti for chili mac, add fine shredded cheddar for chili 3-ways, and some minced onion makes it a 4-way. There are plenty of recipes around for those who want to make it from scratch, but I’m old and lazy.😆
@@LandNfan Yes! That sounds good. I need to make it because I don't know anyone that serves it around here. Thanks for sharing.
A man that can cook ummm omg
Well thanks 👍
Nice seasoned CI DO.
Thanks
I made your recipe as per the directions on your website. I found that there was very LITTLE"chili" flavour, in fact the mustard in the sauce comes through (very predominant). The taste of the recipe was more along the lines of a sloppy joe than that of a chili, is very flavourful otherwise. Thank you for a very good method and starting point. My changes will be, 1 TBSP chili powder vice 2 tsp. 1 tsp cumin vice 1/2 tsp, -1 TBSP mustard. I think that that will bring out the "chili" flavour much more.
Thanks for your honesty. I truly appreciate it. I will try that next time. I feel that recipe should evolve over time till you get exactly like you want it. I will try that too next time to see if I like it. Thanks.
@@SouthernFoodJunkie , thanks for understanding i wasnt criticizing. And for the record, i made the sauce 2 days ago (always better when they sit) made the Hot dogs today the way you prescribed, fantastic!!!!
I agree. It's always better the next day. I will take any leftover and freeze it for a quick meal later on.
Hey! that looks really delicious! I want to try it! Its not spicy is it?... Nevermind, i just read the ingredients, lol😁
Honestly, it's not real spicy. I do add cayenne to it but you could omit that. My kids eat it and only one of them will eat spicy stuff. Give it a try!
Looks great. Up north we call it ours coney sauce, difference is we don't use a roux in chili. Just glad you didn't try to call it Detroit Style like the rest of these fools on youtube, though you executed it better. I like to soak my meat in cold water and break it up underwater before cooking for the texture.
I will have to try the cold water technique. Thanks for the comments 👍
You know every Detroiter makes their version of Detroit hot dog sauce differently, right? How about this? I am not from Detroit, but years ago I worked there and lived there for about five years. During those five years I never, ever heard a word about a Detroit coney dog. If I had I would certainly have looked for one. I also worked in Chicago for a few months. I heard about the Chicago Dog a few days after getting to Chicago and ate a lot of them before I left. ????
@@charleswilson4598 You didn't hear about it because detroiters aren't boisterous cunts like those people in that other midwestern city. We don't feel need to tell you it's a detroit coney, we figure you can work that out for yourself. I am a Detroiter, a real one, not one of these phonies from they suburbs that for many years refused to visit the city proper.
So this is actually what a Coney Island Dog is which was created in Detroit like 100+ years ago so yeah it’s not necessarily Detroit style because that style is what a Coney Island Dog is from Detroit !!!
Thanks for sharing!
You got a 'Like" when you added water to the ground beef.
Thanks 🙏
I was enjoying the video up until the point i saw the Shamecocks cup. Go Tigers!
Haha, sorry to disappoint you. Thanks for watching 😊 and Go Gamecocks 🤙

Good video Brother!! That's how I like to start my Coney Sauce (hot dog chili) by cooking it in the water to completely break up that meat. I'm surprised more people don't do that.
Anyways, turned out looking great!
Hey thanks for the vote! I’m surprised too. It makes it really smooth!
Did you wash your hands after you whipped your nose?
Thanks for asking Tim. Actually I didn’t wipe my nose buddy It was itching so I just touched it. Thanks for the concern.God Bless.
Why not put it on your page ????
You mean my website? I have this recipe on my website if that’s what you mean.
I have searched every where and can’t find the full recipe. If you post a video you sho7ld post the entire recipe, I need the lit of spices.
If you look in the description box, all the ingredients are listed for you there. I also have a link to a printable recipe that I have online on my website. Also, if you Google southern food junkie chili it should pop up!
I think I could have heard you and understood you better without the music. Enjoyed the cooking but just couldn't hear all of it .
Thanks for the suggestion. I know people don't like the music in the videos but I feel they are more boring without it. Thanks so much for stopping by. I really appreciate it.
@@SouthernFoodJunkie It's not boring if we're learning what we tuned in to learn! If we can't hear you, we can't learn.
Thank god for no beans.
That's right lol. When we put beans in it we call that chili beans around here and we mostly eat that in the winter time. Chili = no beans. Chili beans = beans.
Southern Food Junkie thanks, my father thinks beans belong in everything. It’s quite annoying. Though this is someone who eats anything that is cooked to his definition of properly.
@@tomhardware2254 Haha I got ya!
Edit!
Reverse, reverse.
Rule #1 Make your own chili! DO NOT BUY DOG FOOD CHILI> Like WOLF BRAND CHILI ECT YUCK
I agree ☝️
@@SouthernFoodJunkie Thanks for making your own ! I found that your taco meat make a good chili to! Not as messy! More meat less juice Enjoy cheers
"So we can port it"????
To where?
Great recipe, but lose that annoying as heck music.
Thanks but I like the music. I appreciate you watching.
was really liking your video until the loud music came on ~ cant turn the music down because then I miss your talking ~ sorry, leaving :'(
I'm sorry. I appreciate the comment. I feel it makes the video less boring to have the music. I will consider removing it in the future.
You touched your nose twice before you started cooking and you did not wash your hands or wear gloves preparing food for other people. I’m glad I’m not eating your food. It may taste good but touching your nose is gross and with this virus going around that could kill people. Rethink your technique.
I sure did and it was delicious 😋. This was done way before a virus ( this is from 3 years ago) and if you have ever eaten at a restaurant I am positive you have had worse. All I did was scratch my nose. I don’t know if a home cook ( cooking for my family) who wears gloves? How silly is that? I see no problem with what I did but thanks for watching.
Plus, you don’t know if I paused it and washed my hands or not. Such a silly comment lol.
Southern Food Junkie It’s not silly you still touched your nose twice and that is disgusting. You said in your video that you were making the chili sauce for a church group coming over it was not just for your family it was for others. Right isn’t that what you said? Most places that do handle food for others do wear sanitary covers on hands and hair and wear special clothing. I don’t go to greasy spoons with guys cooking with a cigarette butt hanging out of their mouth with filthy aprons and unshaven like you were. I’ve gone to places that require beard covers also. In my kitchen I have an automatic soap dispenser and paper towels and I wash my hands before I cook and after I touch meat and I don’t cut meat up on a cutting board and then use the same cutting board to cut up vegetables, I always use plastic or glass cutting boards, never wood and always different cutting boards because you can make your own family sick if you aren’t careful. My cutting boards always go in the dishwasher. We had a rip roaring flu epidemic both type A & type B for months all fall and winter. One little boy in my granddaughter’s school was hospitalized and tested positive for both types at the same time. So even if this video was made before corona virus you don’t touch your nose and cook for other people. You are gross and you don’t like being called out for it. Most men go to the bathroom and don’t wash there hands either. Are you one of those?
Thanks for your comment. Like I said, You don’t know how many times the video start and stopped. I am Avery clean person, more than most ppl. I wash my hands constantly. Before handling meat and after. The outside of someone’s nose is not dirty. It would be different if I was digging in my nose. No being called out is not a issue but if something bothers you, why even leave a ugly comment like this? You are the type of person that complains about everything. I bet you complain so you can get meals free too. Have a nice day Mrs.
Stop touching your face. Wash your hands.
Thanks for the suggestion but I think I’ll pass 😀
The annoying music ruined the entire video.
Thanks for your kind and generous comment. Some like it and some don’t. I prefer it myself so that’s why Use it.
This is just a bunch of SLOP on a hot dog. I haven't seen a good chili sauce to put on a hot dog. EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Roger. I truly appreciate your feedback.
Just cook the food, and leave that annoying music out of it.
Thanks for your comments 👍
looks kind of bland
You should give it a try! It’s packed with flavor and is anything but bland!
Looks like poop. Nada.
Thanks 😊
