A WWI epic filmed to appear as 1 shot, about a couple of soldiers tasked with traveling deep behind enemy lines to deliver orders that will save 1600 lives. Here's my review of 1917!

That British Bloke that's one of the greatest achievements. The other would be the camerawork and the sense of danger and authenticity (which most movies don't have these days.)

Part of that shock and tension comes from the sound design. I sometimes get annoyed with how films portrays guns or explosions. They are powerful and loud. Really fucking loud. Ramim Ahbab Shabab Aside from the book “All Quiet on the Western Front”, both the Great War and WW2 were dominated by the dualism of the Western and Eastern Fronts, and the idea of opening up a new front in order to divide enemy forces to give your side an advantage was a well used if not risky strategy. So yeah, mentioning fronts in relation to either world war can be taken as a pun.

@@amateurwave3593 That is more than a tad ridiculous to make such a comparison, as though one is an improvement over the other. Soldiers who fought in both wars made similar comparisons as a joke to get through hard times, but the epic scale in which WWI influenced humanity is arguably more significant; WWII looms larger in the minds of much of the world because it is chronologically closer and what the order and mentality of the world was shaped around, but it was coursed and fought over the unresolved issues of WWI. The first conflict is the explosion, the second conflict is the echo that rings the loudest mistaken for the explosion itself.

Like even after 1918, there were still lots of conflicts, wars and civil war (Russian one was major) were going on and nobody can agree on who the real good guys in these conflicts were. So that's why Hollywood isn't keen on making movies of WW1.

This was the best movie I've seen in a long time. It had some of the best camera work I've ever seen. The acting, costumes, and setting made everything feel authentic. I actually felt like it was 1917 and it never felt modern or like Hollywood. The twists were shocking. I grieved when the protagonist grieved, I was shocked when he was shocked, scared when he was scared. The protagonist was never safe, I felt like he was in actual danger and did not expect him to succeed like I do with superhero movies. I haven't been on an emotional journey in a movie in a long time. This was Godfather level good. The movie had actual stakes. I felt like I was there with the protagonist and did not feel like I was watching a movie. I haven't gotten that into a movie in a long time. It was brilliant. It is hands down my favorite war movie! It deserves to win oscars for the writing, directing, and acting. I highly recommend it.

And the gun fights that did exist were realistic and had actual weight to then which other war movies do not. For example, when Schofield was running from the drunk German I was on the edge of my seat because I wasn't sure if he would make it. This movie also did something that many war movies fail to do and that is make me jump at the gun shots. Schofield did not go in guns blazing towards the German but he realistically retreated. I loved this movie, the first thing I wanna talk about is the gorgeous cinematography, Roger Deakins’ camerawork is once again a thing of absolute beauty, every shot in this movie is incredible and the technique of making it look like 1 continuous shot is very well done, the best aspect however is undoubtedly the suspense, this movie is absolutely terrifying in the way it’s put together, much like actual war the action scenes in this movie are very sudden and can be very startling, and when they’re not going on you feel tense cause you’re just thinking “Oh god when’s it gonna happen again” it’s like standing across from someone who’s holding a pin up to a balloon and you not knowing if he’s gonna pop it or not, this movie frightened me on a level no horror movie in the past few years did, the action is also very exciting, it’s not the most violent war movie I’ve ever seen or anything, in fact there’s barely any blood at all, but those scenes are still very effective, there’s not a *ton* of action in this movie but that didn’t really bother me, I was still invested in what was going on, I guess my main issue with it is kinda the same one I had with Dunkirk, there’s not really any character’s to latch onto, it’s not like a huge detriment to the movie or anything but it is something I think could’ve been done better, in the end this movie was fantastic, what it lacks in character or more than makes up for in its other aspects, the cinematography is amazing, the action is great, it’s filled with terrifying suspense and I was glued to my seat from beginning to end. 9/10

Ricky Collins yep, that last scene was pretty memorable. I heard how a lot of people in a film crew detest very long takes like that as its a nightmare to set up, but Alfonso Cuarón was like, fuck it, this is happening. I absolutely love Children of Men for ending like that.
