With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto now included on all but the base trim, the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander combines valuable and popular infotainment technology with a compelling array of safety features. But despite a 2016 update, the latest model still struggles to compete alongside competitors from larger brands, like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. That said, George Kennedy did note that neither those rivals can offer three rows of seating-which the Outlander does with a competitive price tag, to boot.
One of the Outlander’s most pressing needs can be found under the hood. The 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine found on nearly every trim delivers a modest 166 horsepower, regardless of whether you order your car with front-wheel drive or one of Mitsubishi’s all-wheel-drive systems: All-Wheel Control (AWC) and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC). The Outlander GT is graced with a more powerful 3.0-liter V6, good for 224 horsepower, but even this engine struggles to compete with more powerful (and efficient) competition.
The benefit of an Outlander, however, comes down to price. Starting at $23,945, there aren’t many options in its price range that can seat 7 passengers. And if an automaker needs to devote scarce resources to a product, safety and infotainment are good places to start. We rented one for 2 weeks on vacation and promptly went and bought a 2018 with 22,000 miles for 16,000 dollars. We loved everything about it. I'm 6'6" tall 330lbs and fit with room to spare. Drove great and had more than enough power for an i4. 16,000 miles later we have 2. Love it.

Down under in Australia we do not get all the models like you in the US. However it is still one of the most popular SUV's on the road. Pricing starts at $29,000.00 Australian up to $46,000.00. Many of these Outlanders are found in family homes and outback on the property. Mitsubishi has a the main stay of being Reliable and well built. Loved your video and I love Mitsubishi.

I test drove one of these, taking it on suburban streets and interstate. The cloth seat was the perfect blend of support and comfort. The ride was smooth. The interior was very quiet. I like the styling inside and out. That old interior design is aging very well, IMO. My only real complaint was the throttle calibration. It's insanely jumpy off the line. I suspect they calibrated it to be like this to give the impression it's more powerful than it really is. The engine felt adequate. The transmission was buttery smooth. Factor in the great gas mileage, the extensive warranty, and the insanely low real world purchase prices, it seems like an SUV bargain of the decade.

I am using outlander since 2009, I don't have any issue, original all japan parts, only changed tires, brakes and Battery once. I trust this car. I would believe on what I am experiencing.
Same I even replaced my 2008 with a 2019 recently and I still see the people who bought my 2008 cruising around like bosses.
And yeah both the vin# on the cars start with a J, meaning they're straight out of a mitsubishi plant and shipped to us.
I just bought a used 2018 mitsubishi outlander es awc with 12,000 miles on it. I chose it because we need an awd 3rd row vehicle for the family we need to be able to put 3 car seats in. And we could not afford anything over 20,000 dollars. I've compared many used vehicles in that price range and what you get for the money. And most of the vehicles we looked at had more miles and didn't offer as much for a base model and higher trim models cost more. We paid 17,250 from a kia dealership and got the add on package that basically cover all of the parts on the vehicle if they go bad plus got the package that covers roadside assistance like flat tired and towing and windshield repair and stuff and these last as long as we own the car. And got all that for less then 20,000 dollars can't beat that price. Plus still covered under factory warranty. Only thing I would have like to had is a couple more inches of leg room I'm a big guy 6'1 and 250 lbs. But besides that it works and the awd system on the outlander is way better then most of the competition I've watched many videos of the outlander vs other vehicles of the same class and it went places they couldn't and it's 5 star safety rated which is a big plus for having 3 babies
Just bought a 2018 on Carvana with only 11,000 miles. Got it for my small family travel vehicle. Drives like a dream! Very comfortable and roomy. I was skeptical about the CVT and the power of the 2.4L I4 at first but after a day of driving i was sold. It. Actually has a good bit of get up and go. I genuinely have no complaints thus far except for that the 3rd row is cramped (to be expected) it’s perfectly suitable for children and little people. Other than that I’m super thrilled about it and highly recommend this model.

And for $22k for an AWD - YOU SIMPLY CAN'T BEAT IT. I've owned CRV and Pilot. Both good vehicles but nothing that my 2018 Outlander can't do.

I love mine - and I’ve had just about any car i’ve wanted. It’s handsome, the gas mileage is great, it’s comfortable. I have the base model. Put it in sport mode and away you go. Car “experts” be damned.

Good summary. We own a 2016 Outlander. We basically bought it for the 3rd row seats, rock bottom price, and stellar warranty. We do disagree about the vehicle's performance though. It's a slow unwieldy beast that leans too far when cornering, but this is true about the RAV4 and CRV which we cross shopped. So it's par for the course for compact SUV's.

I had the major issues with the transmission/DVT, My entire engine collapsed. I took Mitsubishi to court and won the legal battle after 3 years. During 2016 Mitsubishi recalled 80,000 vehicles for free replacement of the CVT. Check the internet you will get enough complaints and information to substantiate these issues.
I just rented a 2018 Outlander ES on a long drive, and it was surprisingly good. It's definitely between a Nissan Rogue and a Ford Explorer. The 3rd row is survivable for an adult in-county, but it's definitely better suited for kids. I made it from Orlando to Miami and back on a single tank of gas (although I was running on fumes), including some idling (to keep the wife and kids comfortable in smarmy Florida weather), some side trips, traffic, and a car full of luggage. I'd keep this car on my shopping list for a 3-row SUV-ish vehicle for a decent price. Especially if you have at least 3 kids, that third row is a must.
The used car websites exclude Mitsubishi from my search results. Someone really has it out for this brand.

I had a Mitsu years ago it was an Eclipse Spider Turbo. A super fun car with AWD to hold the turbo power on the ground. I never had an ounce of trouble with it. I would buy a Mitsu again if they made an Accord size sedan. I found Mitsu as reliable as any other Japanese brand. I do not know why they have a bad rap in the US. I think because they are cheaper to buy they attract buyers that are less inclined to do the maintenance then complain when something goes wrong. I always found my dealer to go above to keep buyers happy.
Try the Outlander tho it feels nimble for a SUV
I have the PHEV model of this car and I can't really fault it.
You get about 30 miles of electric running with a charge which is perfect for in and our of London city plus it's road tax and congestion charge( U.K.) free.
If everyone drove these in London we wouldn't be choking on the air.

I have similar physical features as you... 6'3" at 225 and I love my Mitsubishi Outlander. Plenty of body room for me. The Volkwagen Tiguan which I was also in the market for was cramped in comparison. The Volkwagon Atlas was just a tricked out Mitsubish to me. I have the 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander SEL just like the test model in the video. I owned a Subaru Forester 2001 from late 2000 to early 2018. I was in the market for another Subaru but a comparable model to the Mitsubishi was at least $5000 more. The Mitsubishi Outlander now is like how the Subaru Forester was up until 2005. Relatively undiscovered and a very good buy. I totally avoid Honda and Nissan SUV's as I found them not worth their popularity. I find the Outlander to be a good buy and wonderful jack of all trades. I use the third row seating in a pinch when I have five or six passengers and it is a GOD send. I find it to be very responsive on the highway and never lagged when I needed torque or power. Is it break trough no, will it give you what you really need... I say that is a resounding yes. I am very happy with this purchase and fully recommend Mitsubishi. I went from being totally Team Subaru to now having Team Mitsubishi join the top spot for me.
You really dropped the ball with this video. No mention of the plug in hybrid at all? You spent nearly a minute talking about trim levels and fuel economy and you couldn't give the most fuel efficent suv a 5 second mention? I got one for $31,500 BEFORE a $5k tax rebate and 4x4.
I have 9100 miles on the odometer and my lifetime average is 83mpg. Another Outlander I run into at the charging stations often is averaging 107mpg over 10k miles. I use about .0001% brain power and put the vehicle to use for how it was designed by using free quick charge stations. It was also the best selling SUV in Europe for 3 years in a row. Use your brain and understand the most economically version wasn't even mentioned. Also, 100k warranty too.
mitsubshi has been getting a raw deal by reviewers for awhile now..they did it with the Mirage too and craped all over it constaly and still do..never mentioning its the highest MPG of any non electric or hybrid car in the country and they sell a ton of them and has an almost cult following .. they loovvveee to crap on them when in reality i think theres a huge market for simple cars that dont lane assit and auto brake and has internet and tracking garbage. When i got my Nissan versa note s my brother laughed at it because it didnt have power windows or auto locks like it was a pain in the ass to roll up the window or put a key in a lock..people are becoming jaded when it comes to cars now.

Talk to anyone who owns a Mitsubishi. They LOVE them. And they are the most reliable brand. These RUclipsrs love to beat up on them, though. Half the negative stuff this guy says is obviously biased characterizations. Or bs if you will. Don't take this clown's word for it. Go drive one.

@@LocoMe4u we have a 2007 and are looking to go with a 2019. I refuse to own a CVT made by Jatco though so the GT is the only option. Seems to be a unicorn in the used car market though. Our 07 is the same although less hp 3.0 with the same 6 speed auto. Rear sub frame is in bad shape from northern winters. This one will definitely get undercoating treatment. Dependable car that powers through snow even on all seasons.

I like the ground clearance and the diff lock selection. On numerous occasions, this SUV has saved me from heavy traffic by letting me go through light off road trails through mountains, and cross center island barriers with 6 inches of snow. I like how manageable it is on road and on light off road and gradients. I wanna see how the Outlander goes head to head with the Kia Sorento, which has a locking differential too.
Hopefully new found money and resources from Nissan/Renault will push mitsu offerings up a notch or two and keep prices in check...bit everything mitsu makes directly competes with a Nissan/Renault product, although not at the same level...sadly mitsu is not on any car radar i have...now if they (mitsu) could revive the galant vr-4, that might make me take a look...a 'vr-4 wagon would be better
Okay, can several people clarify. How reliable are Mitsubishi vehicles now? I've seen too many conflicting opinions on Reddit and would like to know what the RUclips audience thinks. Honestly, the Outlanders from 2007 onward don't seem bad but because of bad marketing I guess Mitsubishi lost some of its foothold in the US market and is trying to regain it.
I am currently renting one with 10k on the clock. Im usually picky about cars i like. This one has a few things i made note of. Nothing is a deal breaker.
Pros it feels like ive been driving this thing for years. Buttons are where i think they should be. I drove it for 5 hours straight and could have gone 5 more. I took it off road with 6 inches of snow the 4x4 lock workd great. Cons the 4 cylinder is lacking to get up to speed but its a 4 banger with awd and colorado altitude. The steering wheel seams small to me. The rear camera gets really dirty and is unusable when the roads are wet. And the rear hatch button made my fingers filthy trying to find it. With all this i extended my rental 3 days and i am currently looking to buy one.

I just got a 2018 SE Outlander. The ride is good and I find the inside and outside style to be good. It's bigger than my wife Ford Escape. Whats great is the AWD system on these things. Check out some videos it had me sold. It is a little doggy off the line and up a hill But I can see that Mitsubishi is trying to make a gas friendly SUV and I have no issue with that. Also, I had zero issue getting this thing up to speed on the highway 70MPH so I don't know what this guy is talking about. At a stop light YES slow on the take off but I feel this is a gas saving trick so one does not floor it on take off.
This seems so tiny next to him, like a little wagons. SUVs became the new smaller mini van when most parents feel too cool to drive a mini van - me being one of them

got 2 yr old 7000 mi 2016 leather GT V6 with everything for $25k about same price as mid-level 4 cyl CRV with 2 row cloth. dealer is 90 min away though. drives well enough for all the stuff it comes with . To get 360 parking cam, heated steering wheel and android auto I'd have to trade in for newer. Not as good as $45,000 Pilot or Highlander or cx-9 but does about the same thing for a lot less money.

How safe is this aging 2012 platform in modern crash testing like the small overlap testing? Bags of air are supplemental and need a strong structure to protect interior occupants.

Talk about the exceptional driving experience and the AWD system has smart center front AND rear diff / clutch packs on S-AWC

Somewhat COMPELLING but, COULD USE MORE POWER FOR PASSING.
We own a 2015 Outlander and never had a problem passing anyone on the highway. I've actually caught myself doing over a 100 miles per hour while staying with a pack of cars that were in a hurry to get home.
My wife has this car, and the engine is very noisy for a new car
sigfrern1970 touareg1970 it must be the 4 cylinder engine. Most 4 Cylinder engines make a lot of noise on the road. But they are known to last a long time.
The 2.4 lancer (compact sedan) engine is an embarrassment for an suv of this size. 10 second 0-60 is not acceptable in this day and age.

WATCH OUT FOR LEMON & POOR CVT Outlander. Bought new 2017 Model 4cyl in Jan 2018, had first transmission removal around 4300 miles. Engine Oil leaked through CVT torque convertor area. Same problem kept happen within 3000 miles range, Lemon lawsuit case filed and still waiting for anything from Mitsubishi. 10yr / 100000 miles Powertrain warrenty does not cover 100% for this matter. Luckily my bumper to bumper covered those issues.

I love my car BUT...It is a shame that some Mitsubishi dealers will try to find any excuse not not to honor the bumper to bumper 60,000 Mile Warranty. No matter how great of a product is...if you have issues and you take it to the dealership to get fixed and you are given the run around so the dealership does not have to bother to send a warranty claim to Mitsubishi that will hold their money for some time. Mitsubishi dealers are digging their own grave and soon they will be just like Suzuki Dealers....GONE...

Just rented a base model from Budget rent a car. It has 35,000 miles on it and rides like the cheap piece of car it is. I would never buy one.

If you are looking for a cheap 3rd row consider LEASING a Journey or a Tiguan. Rogue dumped the 3rd row (Family Package) in '18.

Except the Dodge Journey, this is the worst mid size SUV in my opinion. Plus Mitsubishi is a ghost... there are very few dealers and 20 years ago used to make good cars... but not anymore

I have the Hybrid model Outlander for a company vehicle and I average 83mpg over 9100miles. We got it for 31,500 WITH a $5 tax rebate. Oh, and it also has 4x4. don't buy mitsubishi...i've owned two and they breaks down all the time. bought them brand new with 10 year warranty. They won't fix them under the warranty....it's a sham...you'll need to spend your money on lawyers to have these guys fix their garbage. I've lost soo much sleep and money over this situation. Don't be me.

LOL I'd take a Mitsu any day over ANY american/korean car company and depending on the model, over a Toyota even. I've driven those cars ion some really shitty roads and they deliver... and you can still see in other countries Monteros with 500k miles on them driving like it's nothing. It's a shame we don't get the Montero/Pajero, that thing is bulletproof

i'm on my second mitsubishi....both outlanders (2016 and 2017) Horrible build quality. 4 months into owning it , the ABS module started leaking lots of brake fluid....destroyed all the paint in engine bay and subframe. Mitsubishi said too bad. Now , brand new car with exposed sheet metal ...will rust in a year. Lots of other issues with the car also. side view mirror cracked in half while driving on highway...never seen something like that in my life...nobody believes me...including the dealer. Interior squeaks and rattles after few months of fine pavement driving. I wanted something different than the usual honda and toyota....big costly mistake on my part. also, their dealerships are 3rd world...1 mechanic, 1 service rep..etc.....mom/pop feel when you deal with them. i live in fort lauderdale , so lots of dealers around....all with the same feel....subpar. Good news is they never feel crowded...show rooms are ghost towns. For what you get , their pricing should be way under the competition....by a 1/4 , just to stay in business. Both my cars averaged 15 mpg combined ....for a small suv ( i gave mitsu a shot because of long financing deals they had....6 years at 0 apr....wasn't worth it.
