I can't really decide which moment was the worst for me in this movie. Anne blurting out that her brother-in-law wanted to marry her before he married her sister? Anne yelling Wentworth's name from the window? Anne's musings about the octopus? Anne peeing behind the tree is definitely up there, hard to decide. I think they wanted to subvert the expectations by making Mr. Elliot somewhat honest about his reasons for visiting the Elliots and taking out the character of Mrs. Smith. It didn't work. I hated this movie.
Also, Dakota Johnson is the prettiest actress in the movie, which is also not Anne.

Oh, the blurting out of Charles wanting to marry her first, that was so cringey and unnecessary too, the octopus and the yelling are definitely up there as appalling moments though. Dakota Johnson is so not right for Anne. Thanks for watching. 😊📚

Love this, Alice. You made such great points here and comparisons between the book and both adaptations. Anne Elliot peeing behind a tree is an image no-one needs and perhaps my worst moment of the film as well. I just wonder what Jane Austen herself would make of it! I loved the latest Little Women adaptation as well - it surprised me how great it was because you think there can’t be much more to bring to it and yet they managed to enthral me!

The 1995 version is absolutely perfect with the exception if Elizabeth's character. Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root perfectly embodied Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliott. The circus at the end was a great addition by the film, it helped shelter then for the kiss, and that was slow because they had been waiting so long for that moment. I'm all for critiquing the 2022 version, but the 1995 Persuasion should be left alone and treated with the same respect Pride and Prejudice 1995 and Sense and Sensibility 1995 are treated. The movies that brought Jane Austen's great novels to life!

I agree that all my points about the 1995 version are so minor and picky in comparison to the vast problems with 2022. I mention it here only as a comparison of a very faithful adaptation, which I believe it to be, on the whole. I thought the kiss and the circus were good, a well worked scene that was not exactly the same as the book but gave it a good cinematic ending. I’ve yet to watch the 1995 P&P and S&S but I hear both are brilliant. The best thing for me in 1995 Persuasion is the subtlety and brilliance of the acting by the leads.

Nice content and a very fair review of both book and movie adaptations. I am, no doubt, much more cynical than you about 2022, but your criticism of it misses no major aspects. Anne 2022 is not recognizable at all compared to the book, and the liberties Carrie Cracknell took with her persona are unforgivable and grotesque. I'd like to think Ms. Austen would be appalled.
I like “1995”, but you are correct, it is not perfect and it helps greatly to have read the book to appreciate its strengths. In recently re-reading the last third of the novel, I better recognized plot shortcuts used in 1995, but also saw how much better use of Mrs. Smith, with some extended conversations, would have helped to reveal much more of the true, hidden internal Anne. It would also have cleared up some plot confusions.
You pondered why 2022 completely removes Mrs. Smith. I suspect it was because that character fully exposes Wm. Elliot as the complete rake and rotter he is. Carrie clearly liked the actor chosen for cousin Elliot (the reviews and responses by female viewers to Henry Golding second this), and likely wanted to present him in the best possible light. She implies that Anne stayed with Wentworth because they were more compatible, not because there were serious character issues with Mr. Elliot the younger.
You also seemed perplexed as to why the story team made Anne as they did. Again, I suspect it was because Carrie C. had an overpowering political agenda to modernize the story (make it relevant to 2020 audiences), and to intentionally empower, coarsen, and cheapen Anne to give her a strong-female 21st century makeover. Note also that the screenplay has Lady Russell admit to dirty weekends on the continent to sustain her own mojo.
I’d rather not get too far into the weeds to present all my suspicions, but it’s my impression that characters played by actors of color receive better, more sympathetic treatment than their book characters would warrant, and the opposite could be said of the white-portrayed characters. The latter are all vain, selfish, dull, boring, or coarse; we justifiably wouldn’t give a fig for any of them if we were to base judgement strictly on what we’re presented. Was this intentional on the part of Ms. Cracknel? A cynic would turn and wink at the camera in silence.

    • @AliceandtheGiantBookshelf
      @AliceandtheGiantBookshelf  2 года назад

Thank you for your detailed comment and compliments. I agree that 2022 tries to make William Elliott into more of a “loveable rogue” character. To be honest, by the time he was introduced the film was too far gone for me already in terms of what had been done with Anne. I found the makeover of Lady Russell as a character who would talk about dirty weekends cringeworthy and inappropriate in the extreme. Undoubtedly one of my least favourite uses of an Austen character apart from Anne herself. As you say, I have no doubt Austen would be appalled! I think in making it “relevant to 2020 audiences” Carrie Cracknell goes too far with Anne’s character. There’s a lot of modernisation I would have forgiven if not for the destruction of Anne Elliott.

From what I hear on booktube in general, and as you also rightly said, its target audience is definitely not the readers (and fans) of the novel. By the way, I totally share your view on the 2019 adaptation of Little Women. Alcott’s books are childhood favourites of mine, and even though the scriptwriters made some changes to the original characterisation, I could still thoroughly enjoy the film (I don’t think this would happen with the 2022 Persuasion).😊🎬📚

Hi Alice, I was going to ask you about your opinion on the Netflix Persuasion. I agree. I just can't get past the fact that they completely changed Anne's personality and it's too modern. It was alright. I saw the 1995 after too which I liked better but the one that I've seen multiple times, is my ultimate favourite, 2007 Persuasion with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones! It's so romantic, sad, emotional, everything it should be! As for Little Women, to go on a tangent, I prefer the 90s version because it's nostalgic, follows a linear path and child Amy is played by a child. Never got why they got Florence Pugh to play child Amy too. It was so wierd seeing a grown woman in a classroom full of little girls. But I loved Saoirse as Jo!

    • @AliceandtheGiantBookshelf

I reserve judgement on 2007 version as I wasn’t able to get hold of it. I did watch clips of my key favourite scenes and wasn’t impressed, but I like the idea of Anthony Head as Sir Walter. I didn’t love the casting in that one, but as I say I haven’t given it a full chance yet. I think Netflix could have been okay if they had kept some of what makes Anne so beloved and not tried so hard to “appeal to modern viewers”. I love Florence Pugh as Amy, the first time I’ve ever been able to like Amy at all, but I do laugh at the school room scene. Just so incongruous, but I still love that they kept the same actors throughout. I’m not a fan of the 90s version, particularly have an aversion to Kirsten Dunst, but that’s just me. 😂 😊📚

When she's running to find him and the sad music is playing and they just stare at each other when Charles is talking about going to the market 😍 I hope you enjoy it when you finally find it. I've got mine on dvd. The only thing with the 1995 one is, I felt the lead actors were too old and then when they finally get together, they give each other a small peck of a kiss. If I'd have waited so long, I'd have snogged his face off 😂 Apart from that, it was done very well. I keep thinking I was being harsh on the new Persuasion but it's definitely the Anne thing that tears people away and it was just too happy. Yeah the scene with Louisa jumping off the wall, in 2022, Captain Wentworth seems to be standing yards away from her as if he doesn't care 😂 at least the others looked as though they tried to stop her. Fair enough, if you don't like Kirsten Dunst. We all have our favourite versions.

This is my first Persuasion adaptation and I loved it it’s a firm favourite just like the 2006 P&P.
I loved your reaction to just the trailer and I really hope that when you watch the film I hope that you watch it with an open mind and know that it’s just another adaptation and how someone else interpreted the book. I loved this film and have watched it 5 times already. Also in this new Persuasion adaptation I loved how they took out a lot of what I call “filler” information to get to main plot of the story and I also loved how they showed Anne being treated horribly by her family. Her father always putting down her ideas as silly and stupid when Anne was the only one in that family making realistic decisions. I have found that it is very similar to the 2007 Persuasion adaptation. In 2007 they used the 4th wall and they added the extra scene with Wentworth returning to Lyme and talking to Harville where he explains how he screwed up and how he finally understands Anne but he can’t be with her because he has to be responsible for Louisa and then Harville tells him about Benwick proposing. That scene is similar to the 2022 beach scene where Wentworth tells Anne that he does understand her. Also in both the 2007 and 2022 adaptions they simplified the dialogue to make the story easier to understand as well as relatable. Also the ending in both 2007 and 2022 has Anne running through Bath without a bonnet. So people saying that 2007 is better than 2022 is just them having a preference. My preference is the 2022 version. I also found Cosmo Jarvis to be a super hot Wentworth again my preference and the 2007 Wentworth was very nice looking because he reminded me the MCU’s Vision/Paul Bethany. Also I have seen comparisons between the 1995 vs 2007 Persuasion adaptations and the criticisms of the 2007 Persuasion are very similar to the criticisms of the 2022 Persuasion. So again all three adaptations have their pros and cons and each has those that prefer one and that one is their favourite.

Alone, I do the things I enjoy, with others, for me, it's usually easier just to go along. Anne is that type to her detriment, she allowed herself to be talked out of marriage to a man she loved rather then argue. Luckily she had a second chance.

I also married an introvert who had a prettier, more-popular younger sister, and was too shy to have boyfriends in high school.
My spouse is an Anne-type, but meaner and less tolerant. She knows her own mind, is smarter than I am in many ways, and she is more handsome than I. I had a chance with her only because of the shyness and because I recognized her early in her blooming phase. With people like Anne (and my spouse) you have to be a mind reader, and you’d better try to step up to the mark. They’re quiet, but don’t miss much.
This nuanced and very fascinating version (or aspect) of Anne was likely not recognized, nor would it have been presented if the showrunners had, because CC was not interested in that kind of heroine. She wanted the coarse, stumbling, quirky, and wise-ass Anne that SHE believed modern female audiences insist upon. With modern 2020 social attitudes further slathered on, they produce a movie that is familiar only in its label. The contents do not match.

The 2022 film was badly written but loved Sir Walter, Dakota Johnson was acceptable and Cosmo Jarvis was a convincing Naval Captain. The writing was so poor and the colour blind casting confusing.
