They played these games to WIN. Look at how many players hitting the deck. Big sense of pride between conferences back then. Not as many teams in the playoffs back then so for those from the not so good teams this may have been their only showcase game they had all year. An all-star MVP was a BIG notch on your NBA career resume.
@MANCHESTER UNITED F.C No, it wont. We dont view soccer the way other countries do and we never will. However, F Manchester United im all about Arsenal.
Doc always had great All- Star games. Cool to see David Thompson play decent too. That Studio 54 incident for him was about a year away and then career over....
Man how awesome is it to see players actually playing basketball in an All star game, instead of the 48 minutes of non stop jacking up 3s and uncontested dunks that we get these days😎
Joe Blank..., Doc was one of the 1st to patient that chased down block shot defense... He victimized a lot players back in day with that form of defense.
gearmas3r Thank You for this gem you showed us! Lord give us real basketball again....defense, competing with effort, being yourself and not a copycat....This generation simply don't even know what their missing and quiet as kept neither do the players......amen.
They guys actually competed in these games. The mid 90's McDonald's All American games were the beginning of the end for any qualitry NBA All Star game.

@@bOmBAsTiK in 84 all star Dr J had 34p on 64% shooting 8 rebounds 5 assist 2 blocks and 2 steals...he got robbed in 77 ring and finals mvp from his toxic teamates and NBA that didnt like instant ABA takeover of the NBA , 84 all star mvp from Thomas and also 1979 all star mvp from David Thompson(25,5,2,1,1 on 42%fg) with 29, 8 reb (6 offensive) 5 assists and 2 steals.Notice that his numbers come without the ball in his hands and iso MJ/Kobe ball or a Lebron system that the ball must be in his hands all the time..its the complete opposite and Thomas had the benefit of the handler of the ball period! Dr J far beyond been the most spectacular player of the game for a 12 year stretch he was unselfish and an excellent play maker on the fast break plus the best combo reb/offensive rebounds, steals, blocks sf of all times till now ,second best Larry Bird and guys like Lebron or Durant way way back..
3 things that are apparent in this game compared to today's NBA are: 1-you see great centers playing on both ends of the floor instead of watching KAT, Embid and Jokic camping at the 3 point line. 2-notice how fast breaks are ending with great ball movement and guys attacking the rim instead of settling for a 30 foot jumper. 3-the ball movement is crisp and not the ISO ball we see today.
the difference b/w this and the current A* game is that they actually try to play real defense here. in the current A* they stand around on D and let players showboat the entire game, which is boring.
This eight minute clip is more exciting than the last 15 years of terrible "NBA" basketball. Of course, these are college graduate grown men (the great Moses Malone the validated exception). Can't beat this.
Back then the players played Defense.............. Not this garbage of the NBA All Star game today .......185-183 is garbage for a final score. All 3 point shooting. BORING !!!!!!!!!!!!
The intensity of this all-star game makes it look like a playoff game.
These guys pride with pride!!! Unlike today.
So nice to see defense. The good ol' days.
the early 80's ruled

@0:14 When players still played the All Star game with heart.
Dr. J has a long list of posterizing great centers.
These guys would kill today's players!
Joe Martin I think the old rules created stars

178-110 These All Stars would be the final.
@@vonholland64And the new rules diminish them.
I miss this level of all star games. Players actually playing defense.
Wow Dr. J unbelievable!!
The best play of that night was Marvin Gaye blowing up the National Anthem.

A crying shame cuz Skywalker was so brilliant. Damn, one of my favorites all time. Especially that first step..

My sentiment exactly. It’s boring. Hence no viewership!!!
Mind you this game was played on a Sunday Afternoon. Gone are the days now that you would see games of this magnitude played at Daytime.
It was another basketball, art basketball, beautiful plays, more beautiful to watch
Dr J makes a great block on Gus Williams and his only concern is that Gus is ok , even tries to catch him as they are falling .
Joe Blank..., Doc was one of the 1st to patient that chased down block shot defense... He victimized a lot players back in day with that form of defense.
03:53 great Doc J basket. Remember having this game taped and watched zilllions of times.
Cesta com a testa
A lot D. Better than today‘s.

1983 was a Heavy year.
Ps Much Gratitude for sharing.

Based off of points, Dr. J was handed the MVP Award.
But based on who led that rally from way down, the real MVP should have been Isiah Thomas.
He got two of his own in '84 and '86
The league couldn't have Isiah being as good as Magic for marketing purposes, we know that now.

Damn! Damn! Damn!! This is an all-star game I remember watching. Nice to hear Don and Bill, they were a TERRIFIC duo. Gosh, I miss Bill's laughter!!
I was there. 5th row at mid court. I'm not kidding.
Unselfish passing and tough defense...how quaint. 😝

2020 ALL-STAR GAME IS A FUCKING JOKE , THESE GUYS WOULD CLEAN THEIR ASS WITH TODAY'S OVER PAYED CLOWNS !! ( IT WOULD BE A COMPLETE LAUGH FEST . )
Kareem was rejecting everyone at the rim
Heaven Yes
Wow, players are diving and hitting the floor and playing D. Thats a real allstar game. todays game is crap!!!
it's game with passion in defense… nowadays, there ladies playing all star game
Marcos knoll barros Are you kidding me? Women play harder and more physical than the men do.
Marcos knoll barros
i agree with you. nowadays it s boring watch a men all star game..it s a circus..

Marcos knoll barros Didn't know ladies was a place.
I'm not complaining at all, but I would've liked to see the East and West stars purple and gold uniforms.
A lot of defense in this game...
gearmast3r you need to do the 1984 all star game, and 1988 in English
doctor made it look ez
And the final score??

do you have the full game video?
I was there, Marvin Gaye for the win!
DOC WON THE MVP BUT YOU HARDLY SHOWED HIS MOVES
... The block on Buck, fancy moves, and the dunk on Artis. *sigh*

East wearing red? O_O
+kATOsTaRiS Yep, East wore red in 1983, 84, 86, 87, 89... West wore blue in 1981, 82, 85, & 92.
Posterized by Dr. J.!!
와 졸 빡시네
do you understand now why jordan could not win anything in his first 7 years? and lebron would probably sit on the bench

today's all-stars should watch this and see why the NBA all-star game was once considered the best of all the major sports
