I remember this game well. I followed Ice through the ABA & NBA, nobody in pro basketball history had a relationship with the backboard glass-like Ice.
I was only able to watch him from when he came to San Antonio. So unique, we haven’t really seen a player since that mimic his game, even though many have and wanted that comparison! 😎😊
Scoring just came so easy to the Iceman because he could score with either hand. He had a fractured wrist in a game and scored over 20 points left handed.
Gervin, the Iceman, was the reason basketball was my favorite sport, my parents say let's go to the Spurs game, seats were $5 so we also took friends.still friends til today, I was 5yrs old, there were the baseline bums heckling the other team, the song " we will we will rock, we will we will rock you" screaming fans to the point you can't hear yourself cheering after Gervin is hitting shot after shot, louder as the games climates to the end, Spurs usually won at home, the loudest arena in the NBA, super great experience, Thank you Iceman, you're my favorite 😍
Grew up in San Antonio and watched the Spurs play often. Gervin used to come outside the Hemisphere Arena with his wife and sign shirts, etc for the fans. He was a cool cat. Still beloved by the city of San Antonio (as is the Admiral and Tim Duncan).
1979-1980 was literally the first NBA season with the 3 ball. Guys from the ABA merger would've had it, but NBA vets and rookies fresh out of college like Magic and Bird would've probably never played with it yet
@@EzekielDBarrett Basically at that time it was a shot just for " specialists".Even the very good shooters like Bird or Gervin didnt even have that mentality because it was considered( and still is) a low percentage shot.
I know this clip is from 2 years ago, but THAT WAS A TRAVEL!! During the past 10 years or so, the NBA has TOTALLY CHANGED how games are officiated.. Casual "modern day" basketball fans don't know jack-squat about the game!! Certainly not from a fundamental perspective.. Presently, NBA rules are interpreted to give the offensive player a HUGE advantage; mainly because it's considered to be more "entertaining" for the fans.. NORMALLY, after picking up your dribble, you're only allowed 2 steps to advance the basketball or go to the hoop.. Not 3, 4, or even 5 STEPS, which is what current NBA players often do.. This is a fact, not an opinion.. Ice took 3 STEPS on that fast break BEFORE he dunked the ball ---- which anyone could see in the slow-motion replay.. That's a violation, no questions asked.. The referee made the RIGHT CALL.. I won't even begin to comment about how current NBA players "carry" the basketball AT LEAST 75% of the time (or even more), which is also a gross violation of traditional basketball rules.. That in itself has had a HUGE IMPACT on the culture of professional basketball compared to the way the game USED TO BE officiated.. Indeed, times have changed..
I followed Ice his whole career since he was playing for the Virginia Squires and he was 19 years old I was with him at his Hall of Fame induction 1996 and I look like James Silas
Well perhaps shooting for sure, but in other areas, especially ABA Dr. J I’m not sure about that. I love Gervin he influenced my game as well as Doc. I’m 59 years old and saw them play back with in the day.
This game was played at the old Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland when I was 16, almost 17. I wish I knew then what I know, now. I would have made it my business to be there.
I went to this game. A rookie Larry Bird would defer to teammates. The crowd would be yelling, "Shoot!" when he had the ball; probably the last time that happened.
So glad I got to see Gervin play in person, though it was a distance off, in the Pontiac Silverdome. The Pistons stunk on ice at the time, and Ice scored freely, but as I recall, Detroit managed a win.
I don't think I ever saw Moses jump like he did for the block at 1:10! I thought he always just used that big behind of his to root guys out to get the rebound. The dunk at 3:06! Can you believe a referee called that at all, let alone in an all-star game? There needs to be more of that now. OBTW - He didn't travel. Two-beat step into the jump after picking up the ball. Making that call would take away a big part of Giannis' and KD's games. 4:59 - Erving to Gervin - They were old Virginia Squires teammates in the ABA. I can remember my dad listening to the Paces-Squires on the radio. In addition to those two, the Squires also had George Irvine (future Paces HC), and when they were all three on the floor, you had no idea who had the ball! Gervin to Erving to Irvine....
Would you look at this!!! They're actually playing DEFENSE in the All Star game. Fans these days have to pay to watch these guys basically run a layup drill & dunk contest while the other team on defensive end stands around & watches too. Disgraceful.
This guy was smooth. He played the game with the rythm of an R&B song that only he can hear.
Marvin Gaye was his best friend
It's called STRING music....SWISH!!!
Gervin was a Basketball PIMP. My favorite layer to watch of all time.
I'd say more Miles...."So What". haha
Perfect analogy....smooth R&B
I remember this game well. I followed Ice through the ABA & NBA, nobody in pro basketball history had a relationship with the backboard glass-like Ice.
back when the All-Star Game was actually competitive and the players gave a damn ...
Just imagine if that traveling call were made in todays game. Final scores would be 35-31.
I watched this whole game as a kid, I grew up in DC and was happy to see it played in my city, Gervin was one of my favorites
They need to put respect on the Iceman’s name..
dr.j and ice man athleticsm were ahead of their time
Yep, in their prime both could play in today's NBA
Gervin and Larry Bird my two favorite player's of all time
Iceman and Doctor still had chemistry from their Virginia Squires days in ABA in Richmond Coliseum.

Yes Sir.
Ice is an Artist..
Made greatness look easy more than anyone EVER.
The ice man
The bank was always open - even on a Sunday. He was an absolute joy to watch, and of course I am stating the obvious.
1 of the best nicknames in sports
Iceman
Notice nobody even THINKING about using the 3pt line....AND ITS THE ALL STAR GAME!!

Lmfaooo they called 3:07 a travel! My how times have changed.
Sam Hui It wasn’t a travel lol
NBA final scores would be in the 30s if they called that now.

Scoring machine with an all around arsenal. The NBA has done us all a disservice with the over marketing of Jordan.
Jordan was legit. But the Lebron machine is out of control. He's a top 10 great player. But, he's not the GOAT.
That's the sentiment of many of the older players like Ice, Jabbar & Julius.
No disservice. MJ lived up to the hype. No debate.
Jordan and Gervin can coexist in their greatness.
Well, capitalist entities want to be part of a successful person.
Mike helped save the league and changed it at the same time. What do you expect?
We knew about Gerv in the ABA. Gerv was doing stuff Doc couldn't do.

@@kwaichangshane122 Mine too. So much so, I patterned my game after the Ice Man - with far less success no doubt...lol

That cuff dunk from Doc on the break was sick. Then he just glides back on defense like it was nothin'
You are so right
Check out his reverse flip layup. Many of today's young people think Kyrie Irving came up with that move, but he got it from Gervin.

That no-look tap off the rebound to Gervin was sick.

Ice Man score 40 and he looks like he just getting started. I loved playing pick-up games against him even though he was unstoppable. Ice Man!!
wow never knew this was at Cap Center. basketball was a much better game back then
Man, dudes back then hanging in the paint like it's the sandbox
SOME not ALL but some players can play in ANY era past and present... Iceman is one of those players

It was competitive, but at the same time players weren't afraid to get creative and put on a show. That's how the All-Star game should be played.

Ice man w/ that smooth hang time.....rather watch these old allstar games vs. today's allstar game....way more competitive
Lol this dude always looked old. He's like the Morgan Freeman of the NBA.
Defense back then was scary.
master of jelly layup
That was not travel
Gervin was a microwave that never stopped cooking.
Dam the NBA today is soft today , when the all star s game played defense
That wasnt a travel

This is how the All-Star game should be east versus west not picking up players like. It is now.

Kareem was pissed Iceman and Julius Irving busted out the funk
