Don, this makes my day..thanks. Love it that you continue to go down John's rabbit hole. It's always a treat to listen to ANY of his songs. He was one of a kind and a treasure given to all of us.
Prine is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His lyrics are so damned creative and thought provoking. Often as deep as Robert Frost, Thoreau, or any other American literary genius.
Prine was in a class all by himself. If he doesn’t get you thinking then you have nothing to think with. A big regret of mine is that I never got to see him in person.
Not to rub it in but I saw him over 25 times in my life and I can tell you it was always a real joy and a very uplifting experience. Not only was he a great artist but he was a truly genuine person and always made his audience feel like he was talking directly to you. I really miss him but fortunately have his music to enjoy.
Random shameless name drop: I was talking to Ashley McBryde a few years ago backstage at a show I was covering, and she mentioned this was her favorite John Prine song.
Thanks Don for this selection. I seen an inteeview was with John and explained the inspiration for this song, was a wairess he met in Chicago. The waitress had a tattoo on her arm that said "Jesus Saves". She told John about wanting to buy and live on a houseboat. The song's original working title was "Blow Up The TV (and throw away the paper)". This was part of John's 1971 debut album,. The song has been covered by John Denver and Bonnie Riatt. Thank you for the reaction.
He mentioned in the first verse that she was a dancer. My first time hearing it. The topless part in the second verse didn’t surprise me like it did you.
I remember a funny version of this being sung by John Denver. There were a lot of yee haws and loud laughter in the background. I've only within the last year or so even knew that John Prine was responsible for this. Liked the rating, too.
Great great choice Don - I love it! John is the GOAT! Thanks!

Go ahead and rub! Over 25 times. I’m going out on a limb here and going to say that you kinda liked his music 🤣
"...I was just a soldier on my way to Montreal..." Is a definite Vietnamese reference...

You can randomly pick out any Prine song and never miss. His work is that strong. Thanks for reacting to him.

Songs like a Prine song if I’ve heard one!

Side note, if you go to our radio stations websites and look at our morning DJ picture he looks a lot like John
I always thought this was an anti-war song. The soldier leaving the country to avoid Vietnam, dropping out of the mainstream to live his own way
