Enrico Macias is what the french call a 'pied-noir' (blackfoot); someone with a north-african background living in France.
Enrico was born in French-Algeria when it was still believed to be part of France.
Enrico came from a sefardic jewish-algerian background and his family felt being forced out of Algeria during the struggles for independence.
Algerian independence became a fact in april 1962 endorsed by president De Gaulle despite the resistance from right-wing french military OAS.
Christian-colonial rule ended, making place for an islamic republic.
In modern times, Algeria played a important role during the so-called 'Arab Spring'.
This song reflects Enrico's longing for Algeria, a kind of home-sickness.
Since Enrico is pro-Israël, he is not being welcome in Algeria.
    Much to his regret.
    LYRICS - LES PAROLES ----------------
Enric Macias - Toi la mer immense (1968)
    Toi, la mer immense
    Tu ne m'as pas dit
    Que tu as la chance
    De voir mon pays
    Depuis mon absence
    Où en est la vie?
    Est-ce du silence
    Ou bien de l'oubli?
    Toi, la mer immense
    Porte-moi l'écho
    Des notes grinçantes
    De mon vieux piano
    Les oiseaux vont-ils toujours
    Chercher les bateaux?
    Ma maison va-t-elle toujours
Le soir, se regarder dans l'eau?
    Toi, la mer immense
    Si tu vas là-bas
    Porte à mon enfance
    Un peu de ma voix
    Depuis mon absence
    J'ai eu d'autres joies
    Pourtant quand j'y pense
    Je pleure bien des fois
    On a beau se réfugier
    Dans un autre port
    On revit par la pensée
Longtemps ce que l'on croyait mort
    Toi, la mer immense
    Tu ne m'as pas dit
    Que ton cœur balance
    Entre deux pays

    TRANSLATION - ENGLISH ---------------
    You, immense sea
    You haven't told me
    If you've had the chance
    To see my country
    Since my absence
    How has life been?
    Is it one of silence
    Or of forgetfulness?
    You, immense sea
    Carry to me the echo
    Of the creaking notes
    Of my old piano
    Do the birds still go
    Searching for boats?
    Does my house still look
At itself in the water in the evening?
    You, immense sea
    If you go over there
    Carry to my childhood
    A little of my voice
    Since my absence
    I've had other joys
Yet, when I think of it
    I cry many times
    It was nice, taking refuge
    In another port
    One revives by thought
What was for a long time believed dead
    You, immense sea
    You haven't told me
    That your heart balances
    Between two countries

Love this song. Being from Hong Kong and having left my homeland before 1997, I totally identify with Enrico Macias.
