    Kris, Wow. Love the way that bridge pick up sounds. So many people complain about the brashness of the bridge pick up on a Strat but I really think you just come with a great idea. I have a spare telly pick up I think I’m gonna stick it on a Strat pick guard and see what happens. Great playing by the way. Thanks for the great video!

    I am quite surprised as well about the Tele Bridge pickup on a Stratocaster. That was one of the first mods I ever did! I think it's because most people still don't realize the Tele bridge plate underneath the pickup itself is what makes it far more bad ass than it's Strat counterpart bridge pickup. That and the reputation of Tele twang overshadows so much of the Rock and Roll Blues kick assness that is naturally in a Tele just waiting for you the player to tap into it.

    Hi Kris... one thing i like as a mod to both my Strat and Tele is changing the Volume Pot from the stock 250k to a 300k pot... Something I learned from the Eric Johnson wiring diagram... it removes some mud from the Neck pickup position... adds some chime and clarity without sacrificing warmth... and having done the tone knob mod for the bridge pickup, it affords you the ability to make sure that the bridge isn't overly bright from the additional 50k added to the Volume Pot... just overall makes the neck position more usable, enjoyable AND your drive tones are clearer in the neck too :-) Thank you for the great content !! Blessings, Mark :-)

    Tele pickup? Yep, I did this about a year ago by putting a SD Twangbanger in the bridge so no need to mod the pickguard or buy a new one. My wiring was done by Lindy Fralin: master volume, master tone and blend. This lets me use bridge and neck, Tele style as well as dial up a whole host of other great tones. And I didn’t forget the treble bleed. Love this setup!

    Hi Kris, great vid, perfect playing. So tastefull and elegant! Love it that you are not shredding (although I bet you could!) so one can really HEAR what you are talking about. That Telly PU in bridge position can defenitely replace a humbucker. Great choice. I will pick up this idea for my strat. The one strat mod I'm still looking for is to switch off the middle PU to create a telly sort of sound without adding a switch... do you know where I can find some schematics?

    Great mods, I tried most of them and some are more, some are less useful. I will add one, which is super cheap and super useful: If there is a gap on the sides between neck and body (even as narrow for the credit card thickness, or less), you can line the sides of the neck pocket very carefully and neatly with aluminum tape, (the one used for HVAC application), make sure it's not wrinkled, flatten it to be smooth and add layer by layer, very gradually, until you can fit the neck into the pocked to be very snug. You should not make it too narrow and use too much force to fit it in as you can crack the neck pocket. You should be able to lift the guitar gently holding the neck, without screws in place. You will see the tremendous increase in sustain and responsiveness and you can thank me later.

    Holy shit. That Tele pickup in a Strat. Sorry but holy shit that’s awesome. At first I was totally digging the middle position and loved the quackiness but the bridge clean sounded off at first. The came the gain and it was jaw dropping. I’m totally stealing this from you.... need to buy a Strat first. Lol. Emerson is down the road from me and I really like their stuff. If you have an extra Strat-style guitar, and are willing to go 'hardtail', get a brass pipe ring (mine was 3/4 inch thick) saw it in half, and tap it into the space between your tremolo block and the wood of the body. This mod works especially well with the thin, cheap zinc blocks. The increase in sustain, especially in the mid-range, will amaze you. And, you can always remove it and reset your tremolo.

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  4 года назад +1

      Bee Gee Hey man, there are three things you must do to fit a tele pickup in there. 1. make the body cavity routing bigger 2. drill the the holes in the pickguard for the tele pickup 3. make the bridge pickup Routing of the pickguard bigger with a file (Tele pickups are a little longer and wider than strat pickups).

I upgraded the vibrato bridge to Wudtone CP 50 (with narrow string spacing - 54 mm), Highwood saddles (10,8 mm) and Mark Foley vintage spec vibrato springs. Whole guitar was CRYO tuned. Hi Kris! Are you suggesting to make the painting thinner by sanding it?!

    • @KrisBarocsi
      @KrisBarocsi  5 лет назад +1

      Marco La Cagnina It’s not easy sanding an existing finish thinner because the color layer is right under the thin clear top-coat. You will end up with a guitar that doesn’t have any color anymore but still has a thick base coat (-> that’s the thickest part of guitar finishes). It’s best removing all the finish and refinishing it. It’s not cheap if you let someone do it for you unfortunately. You can of course learn it yourself too. I’ll have a new video series on my channel, where I refinish a body. Stay tuned. 😉 cheers!

    Kris, no Highwood Saddles on that vintage style trem? Regarding guitar finishes; all now vintage PRS Customs 24 guitars are finished in thick polyester finish AT FIRST...this gets really thin by sanding which is done by very experienced sander finishers as they know exactly when to stop sanding before they sand through the finish. I repeat what John Suhr said about nitro finish: nitro finish is bad protection against moisture, gets brittle a cracks when it is cold, gets sticky when it is hot.

      Eoghain murphy Thanks man! Yes, unfortunately some routing is necessary for a tele bridge pickup in strats. Even on strats with humbucker bridge pickup routing. Also, the hole on the pickguard is gonna be too narrow so you also need to file that wider. It’s quite a job but it’s worth the trouble. 👍🏻

    Love all your thomann gear and interview /lick series videos really interesting getting into the headspace of the different guitar players and of course the humor in the videos too! 😉:
    *
    One thing im very curious about tho, you mention one mod being thin finish " and I agree no finish or a nice thin nitro" finish that will eventually relic are the best ways to go, buuut unfortunately that could end up being the most costly mod on this list, you wrote that you have a year 2000 American standard strat body here in the description but didn't the standard line come with poly finishes? Did you refinish yours and relic it over the years as well? If so how much does this cost you? There is a guy in my area who charge 500 cad for a poly - to - nitro refinish /relic so as much as it's an ideal look and feel it usually ends up costing alot to achieve that mod " on the list. So I'm curious how you went about that man!
    *
    Lastly bonus mod * can't believe you didn't me tion or don't have HAP locking tuners, Eric Johnson uses a more vintage looking one that might fit the look fo your strat the best, even tho many companies make good ones. I would almost say that the bone nut plus locking tuners are the best mod that can be done for tuning stability they certainly helped my strat out alot! 😋

      adam martynek Thanks for the comment Adam! I’d love to visit your area one day. Love the nature there.
      I refinished my guitar (well most of my guitars) myself. I don’t mention this in the thomann videos a lot - don’t wanna show off or anything - but I’m a guitar luthier. That’s what I work at thomann when we’re not shooting videos.
      This saves me a lot of money of course but takes a lot of my free time. 500$ sounds fair to me for all that work by the way. On the other hand if you have a place to finish guitars, go for it and learn it. There are lots of good videos on this subject that can help. Get some spray can nitro from Stewmac and practice on cheapo guitar bodies. You’ll learn it fast and then you can refin your own babies yourself. Ohh and I’ll have some videos online in a few weeks about refinishing and such. Stay tuned. 😜
      Cheers man!

      @@KrisBarocsi YES you should it never gets old that's for sure, the niagara gorge underneath niagara falls is a great hiking spot. But about the guitar thanks for the response - damn you're a humble Renaissance man Kris you clearly know your shit about alllll of these mods /repairs etc. Then that's awesome definitely not something I'm as well versed in!! Haha if there is one thing I can see myself attempting it would be stripping a finish and then hopefully that shaves off enough of the cost to just finish " the guitar rather than bringing it in for refinishing" from poly to nitro. You did quite an impressive job refinishing your tobacco strat here man, I like the heavy yet medium relic in certain places too! I can see that's the freedom of doing it all yourself you can get carried away in places and it won't really matter as much 😋 bro that would be excellent! Myself and everyone else I bet) would love to see a video fo you doing the refinish.

      1 more future request and thank you as well for getting Canadians Phil X and nick johnston on the thomann show, I had the pleasure of meeting him last September, he grew up in a town 1 hour away from me! Got another Canadian guitar god, who is very current who you have to go checkout : Ian Thornley of big wreck monster player in all regards!

      adam martynek thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely check out Ian.
      Yeah it’s a pretty good idea sanding the body and only paying for the refin. It saves you money and you are a part of the project. That’s always a nice feeling. Take care dude!

    cool video, but would be nice if you had comparison clips too. With nothing to judge directly against in your vid, it is hard to really understand the difference, especially in regards to the pickups and electronics.

      jt3483 very good point! It was a very long process of testing and swapping parts on my strat until I got to this point. That alone makes it impossible to have a proper A/B testing. Sorry for that. All I can say is that I love my strat way more than before the mods. Haha!

      septemberfire I know what you mean. My first priority was a rosewood fretboard though. Then I decided to go for a roasted maple back for stability. Would look sick with a full roasted maple neck though.

I have antiquity 2's on one of mine but a Fralin bridge because of the metal base plate.....all the other mods except treble bleed which I have on my Tele. One going on Strat no 1 now!! I resonate with your finger style, best mod you can do:)
