Hi Kris! I first learned about Gunnera from your channel, I LOVE giant plants. I'm located in Nova Scotia and I was so amazed to see one growing in-ground at our Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, right along the Bay of Fundy. It is nestled in a forest grove, right on the upper limit of Zone 6b in Canada. I was shocked to see one here!
It would have been good if you had shown us images of the different identifying traits that distinguish one Gunnera from another as you describe them verbally: that is the beauty of a video...otherwise radio or podcast is just as good, mate
Well I never! I'm sure I was sold a Tinctoria as a Manicata. It's about 3 years old and not very big (1 metre) even though I feed it loads. I wish I had a Cryptica! Great video as always! Thanks Kris!
Wonderfully in depth video Kris. Really well presented. I had no idea we weren't growing true Manicata. I'm trying it for the second time this year with some success so far. Been a while since I've owned this plant.
So glad you did this video kris 👏 thanks for clearing it up!! Any chance you can do a video on tetrapanax as that's another plant that has so much misinformation out there, like dose the Rex really exist. Thanks Tony 👍
I have a hard time growing this plant along with the bat flower plant not sure why I’ve grown every thing you can think of hard and extremely difficult cultivars but these two plants are hard to keep alive
Hi Chris, I've subscribed to your channel. I'm new to this style of garden. I think it's absolutely fantastic 😀. Your knowledge is fabulous 👌. Could you, would you do a list of good suppliers who sell Gunnera plants ? I'd love one in my garden. I live in Staffordshire. Looking forwards to watching more. Julie
From Wikipedia : Gunnera × cryptica is a hybrid between Gunnera manicata and Gunnera tinctoria. Both species were introduced into cultivation in Western Europe towards the end of the 19th century. The hybrid occurred spontaneously in cultivation, in Europe probably around 1873. Both morphological and molecular analyses have shown that plants widely cultivated in Britain and Ireland under the name Gunnera manicata were all the hybrid, and that the true species G. manicata is no longer found there. This situation may also be the case in Europe and other parts of the world. The hybrid is more resistant to frost and adverse conditions than G. manicata, which is likely to be why it has replaced it in cultivation.
Mine is showing no growth and is covered in lilly of the valley this year, Im in the Uk, its an old established plant, do you think its dead? When do leaves normally appear?
@hooperb63 I guess if some have been imported directly recently there could be some but almost all in the trade will be from stock that's cryptica or tinctoria. I guess really the question is why would you want to grow manicata over cryptica? cryptica is hardier and can grow bigger.
I do have a gunnera in a large container, simply because if I move I can take it with me. Not sure which it is but it seems content enough! Had it for 4 years.
Best video ever! How can you top that, hope you do though. So much more fun than reading a research paper.
Hi Kris. Good to see you that the article I forwarded to you went out as an episode. The mind boggling world of Gunnera well explained.

They are pretty tough, especially tinctoria
Why am I not growing one? I don’t have space 😅 might have to make room.

You can see the images in the linked paper

I had to settle for a Rheum, not enough space. Thanks for this, interesting
How long does it live?
I don't have room...but I grow normal red stemmed rhubarb for ground cover under and around Palms
Nice one Chris. I have 3 of these puppies and may need to look into their labeling 😊

That does make perfect sense
I have the real gunnera manicata here in Ecuador. Ditch find😂

Most half decent garden centers will likely have gunnera in their catalog. Which one is always the question :)
Cheers from a dutch 8a/8b exotic garden
Most are tinctoria in garden centres. Cryptica/manicata is often found in plant nurseries in the South West

Anyone knows where to buy Gunnera Manicata Plant in Europe?😊

Leaves should certainly be appearing now, wherever you live in the UK
Thanks had a proper look and spotted 2 leaves coming through about an inch tall, yippee
Hi, is there any noticeable differences in young plants?
It's tricky when young as noticeable differences develop with age
are these plants poisonous or toxic to humans or animals?
They're not edible but not classed as especially poisonous
I wonder if it is the same in the US
That's a good question
So what grows in the big gardens in cornwall??
Cryptica. Those are some of the ones studied in the scientific paper
@@YorkshireKRIS thanks Chris
Not growing one because none of my seeds ever sprout
Would they grow in shade?
Yes they will providing its not deep full day shade.
Yes they will providing its not deep full day shade.
Mine died over the winter this year
Sorry to hear it
Sorry Kris this is nonsense, you can't say there isn't manicata in any part of the UK you should not be misleading people
The paper explains that early on the hybridisation occurred and that's what we've been growing ever since.
@@YorkshireKRISthere is definitely manicata in the UK maybe not a lot but u can't say there isn't any at all
