After an investigation by the FAA and NTSB, it was concluded that the pilot was flying over the race when suddenly he heard an announcer on a loud speaker who was so atrocious that the pilot lost the will to live. After unsuccessfully dying in the subsequent crash, he ran down the hill to kill the announcer with his bare hands.
Is the pilot the guy that is running? Lol
@@fabiovezzari2895 yes lol the white shirt guy that at first runs left of the crash, he then proceeds down the hill towards the announcer booth, presumably, to murder him. Lol

Was this the spectators' first time seeing a helicopter in real life or something?
🤣🤣🤣
Maybe, they never closed to helicopter before.
Yes, it was also the pilot's first time seeing a helicopter.

The pilot was a moron though.. the reason he crashed was down to pilot error, he could of killed people due to his stupidity.

This was my friends helicopter that was being used by a flight school. I remember when he called me to say he thought he was financially ruined because of this. Luckily there were no injuries and everything turned out OK for him! Scary stuff... They were flying too low, too slow, too heavy all while at a higher elevation and being fully fueled, on a hot day while not leaving enough room to recover.
Yep. That will do it.
Helicopters are scary. Like if the rotors stop spinning you just plummet. At least w a plane you can glide
@@jackriley77 That's actually not true. You can glide in a helicopter as well, it's called auto rotation and you can land safely without a working engine if you're a trained pilot.

Looks like a “settling with power” situation. Hopefully everyone in helicopter made it out safe. As for the guy on the microphone ...what a douche lord.
That is what I thought too. He went back around into where his prop wash was still rolling. Thought he had time to scoot sideways too, but might have been scared of going over the people to get altitude by going downhill. If so, kudos for crashing in a field rather than risking people to save a machine.
Always have to plan for the worst, especially in a helicopter, especially with a reciprocating engine, especially in the mountains, and most especially for a CAMERA! They are killers.

From NTSB: "The pilot had just performed a left-pedal
turn and the helicopter was facing upslope to the mountain. The low rotor warning sounded and the pilot lowered the collective and
increased throttle. The pilot stated that the engine did not respond so he continued to lower the collective and looked for a place to
land." If he got the horn, he certainly had low rotor RPM and you can bet it was from the High Density altitude, high weight and trying OGE
I fully agree!
Since I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. I would have to Concur with everything you have stated !
Higher altitude air as well as hot air is less dense.
@@mustang3.0 Best western guy myself….but I’m also concurring.
Actually it was the pilots brain that wasn't responding.
Im glad to see Jeff Spicoli made something of himself and became a downhill skate announcer.
That pilot kept his composure and knew what to do in that situation, unlike the recorder. Good thing no one got hurt.
??? He started filming that helo when it was far away, never stopped even when it looked like he would turned into swiss cheese from the rotor blades...what more do you want?
I have been a helicopter mechanic, and pilot for 25yrs.
NEVER get out of a crash when the blades are turning! Dumb, dumb, dumb!
Amen!
The pilot was one of my instructors a good few years back. He was flying heavy with bad wind direction. He did a good job making sure he brought it down without hurting anyone. The owner was happy it was insured for more than it was worth. Sometimes you just need to tell the camera guys inside you just can't get the shot instead of forcing it and chancing a incident like this.
chopperbubba he was a very good instructor. He had several thousand hours but made the mistake of listening to the camera guys wanting to be lower. The pilot should always do what allows for safety. The wind is a reason but not an excuse.any pilot can tell you people who don't know about flying will always push you to do unsafe things just because they have a lack of knowledge.
chopperbubba I agree 100%. I had a photo flight in a 22 where the camera guy wanted me to fly slow with a tail wind. I declined and described why. I'm not saying he didn't mess up just saying that he was a good pilot making a lapse in judgment. I talked to him after and he understands the mistake. And you are right people seem like they want to walk into the tail rotor.
chopperbubba haha I don't know. I started having to be in charge of watching out for people around my helicopter right around the time that girl walked into the airplane prop. Makes you want to yell at people.
The actor Vic Morrow was decapitated by a rotor blade because the helicopter pilot listened to the director’s shouts of “lower!! lower!!” instead of doing what he knew was the right and safe thing.
@@coalcreeker583 Sad how he and those kids died. Weird that he died playing, to me, his most famous character that of a Soldier. I grew up watching "Combat" on a B&W Zenith.
That guy was commenting on the race but change its focus on the incredibly rare chopper that only couple of people had the chance to see in its natural habitat, thanks for this rare sighting..... ')
He didn't just get wiped out by a wave, he crashed a helicopter. The eyes see, but the brain just can't compute. Obviously a bright star for the future.
Yes I do fly R22's, and R44's. I'm a CFII with endorsements to instruct in both. Your statement that the helicopter shouldn't get into a low rotor situation because it has a governor is misleading and dangerous. The governor fine tunes the throttle input to keep the engine rpm at the appropriate level to keep the rotor rpm in the green. At high DA you can hit "full throttle" and the governor can do nothing to help. This finite amount of power is why it is challenging to fly high, hot and heavy.
I’d say dangerous instead of challenging 🤷🏼♂️
These birds don't have much power to begin with, makes you respect limited power available & rotor limitations..terrible things happen with rotor under/overspeeds, settling, LTE, myriad of other things.. always fly with deliberate respect, knowledge of craft, and leave yourself more than one planned option..😉🚁
It was very risky to jump in front of moving rotators
Never fly a Robinson higher than you are prepared to fall 😂
I just watched another video of a Robinson that chopped off its own tail during flight and crashed, killing both occupants. Those Robinson's don't look good to me at this point.
"If you're lucky, you might see it crash." I guess we're lucky!
Wow that commentator really likes the sound of his own voice.
I forgave the cameraman for having a loud mouth, he was perfectly crazy enough to keep filming when even I was running for cover when it crashed!
Actually, what you see here, from the pilot's response to the low-RPM horn was absolutely correct: lower pitch, then increase throttle, failing which look for a landing spot. From experience, I have little doubt that the road would have saved the helicopter, but may have struck a racer. Given the circumstances, most pilots' reactions (mine included) would have been much the same. The more pertinent question is what led to the loss of power, and the NTSB concluded it was due to density altitude.
Yes. The pilot did do exactly what should have been done when he found himself there, however, he should have never found himself there; a hot day, too heavy, too slow, and too low, and no real place to land at that point. He accommodated the camera man instead of the aircraft and situation.
@@blondblue1949 I agree completely. He was way behind the aircraft by that point. Thank goodness he realized quickly and didn't try for a desperate save that made things worse.
I was wondering if he might have flown too many turbines in the weeks leading up to the crash. Looked like he wasn't paying much attention to available power.
At the 31 sec mark you can see the flag waving stong as he is almost head on into the wind for a low aproach.
Then his mistake was to turn almost 180 downwind and it settled into his own vortex downwash creating a loss of lift.
Rookie mistake I assume.
That’s a great explanation
Bad mistake but he is a great pilot. He was my flight instructor years ago. He preached safety and could auto that thing on a dime. Keyboard warriors bash everyone who crashes but the thing is in the commercial world shit happens. You live you learn. He was humble. Kind. And talented.
@@tylerw1418 Shows that very experienced and talented people can make mistakes.
Thinking you are the one person who never makes mistakes is a very dangerous attitude in itself.
Everyone always says they can do better after the fact
Lost lift very quickly, they're very lucky to have survived!
Flying these seems to be MUCH harder than a small plane...so many variables to affect flight and landings.
Oh, HELL yeah! : )
The Robinson's are quite touchy.
Fantastic.
I appreciate the precision of aiming for the people below. All that wilderness and they put the helicopter down on top of them.
“It’s gonna blow”
Detectives have determined that the helicopter was most likely sabotaged by the man taking the video. He was the only person who knew in advance what was going to happen.
That announcer Drunk? He was STOKED!! 😂
The guy on the microphone would make a great war correspondent😂
Oh My GAWD!
I live in hope that if it had caught on fire, the thing with the camera would have jumped into it.

So what's the elevation of the mountain their? Helicopter probably flying too slow for the altitude.

Why does everyone say, "it's gonna blow." Like every crash has to end in an explosion. Someone has been watching too many episodes of CHiPs.

Thank you Jeff Specoli.
Settling with power AKA Vortex Ring State. Poor situational awareness.
Chip Kalvin
I was wondering if that was a vortex ring state bringing it down so suddenly
Awesome!
Glad the pilots okay. Must have been a hillside wind or the throttle wasn't putting out but that was sure lucky.
was this the first time a helicopter was at a longboarding event?
"The pilot had just performed a left-pedal turn and the helicopter was facing upslope to the mountain. The low rotor warning sounded and the pilot lowered the collective and increased throttle. The pilot stated that the engine did not respond so he continued to lower the collective and looked for a place to land. During the forced landing on the downsloping terrain the helicopter came to rest on its nose, resulting in substantial damage to the main rotor, skid tubes, and tail boom." (ntsb.gov)
does anybody know where the helicopter was from (like who owned it and why they were there)?
how does this affect your chances of being employed
@seaswirl79 I included the pilots report to illustrate that they got into and CAN get into low rotor RPM despite having a governor. The governor does nothing to help low rotor when a lack of power/high density altitude situation exists.
I wonder if the copter was repairable. The main blade is still fully intact.
What happened ? Loosing engine power ???
The pilot handled that Robinson very well.
How did emergency services get there so fast?
Already on scene
That's extremely lucky that no one was hurt or killed. Not even the blades sustained damage, incredible!
Those blades are toast.
NTSB report: "The pilot’s decision to operate the helicopter at a high density altitude near terrain, which resulted in a settling with power condition."
No shit ...now we must bow before your intelligence SHUT UP
I would agree with this more. However, wouldn't attempting to gain forward airspeed by nudging the cyclic forward help in some situations?
The commentator sounds like his 10 years old. A guy that will make a show at all cost.
Those things have governors and you shouldn't be getting into a low rotor RPM situation. Most likely, he was just too heavy, too high when it was too hot. If you fly helicopters like I do, it's called high density altitude.
From the NTSB: The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
The pilot’s decision to operate the helicopter at a high density altitude near terrain, which resulted in a settling with power condition

Out of ground effect hover at 10,000 feet. Might want to review the performance charts next time. And this guy was an instructor....
This was my friends helicopter that was leased out to a local school but if I remember the guy flying was more student then instructor. Too low, too slow, too hot, too heavy all at a higher elevation all added up to a bad day.

Great shot
great job by the pilot to put that thing down relatively safely. great job man... ya, I watched with no sound. way better
did the pilot do this delibratly because it didnt look like there was anything wrong with the helicopter
I remember this from other video!!
The tail (empennage) was chopped off by the rotor when the skids dug in and tipped the aircraft forward.
Sad to know so many people were killed. RIP
Strange the helicopter failed when he said we might see a crash... very odd ?
Good gosh!! This one guy acts like nothing happened after the helicopter crashed and didn't even check on the pilot or passengers to see if they were okay. He was just smiling from ear to ear, saying: "Oh my gosh! It's gonna blow!" When the helicopter didn't even catch fire! That's insane!
i wish i was there ROFL
