From what I've seen, most people start to like kids when they become a parent themselves. I think it changes your brain chemistry. Some people don't have it as pronounced as others though, and some people get so depressed they try to murder their newborn.
A friend of mine got to witness it occur in other people in real time and described it like: "It felt like they were getting high." It's probably a change on par with arousal in terms of thought hijacking and perception altering ability. Would make sense.

Many species of mantis cannibalize numerous males to properly nourish their eggs. They all do it willingly through instinct. I can't imagine a greater, more fundamental calling.
