- 2023 saw the MG Car Club of Newcastle host this year Australian Hillclimb championship, which attracted over 100 competitors from around the country to compete in the most prestigious hillclimb event of the year.
The calibre of machines and drivers was next level and vast.
Everybody was out to win, and the battle for that outright top sport was incredibly hard fought by a number of open wheelers that simply defied the laws of physics as they slung around corners and propelled themselves forward at a pace I have not seen before.
From the start, the goal was never to win outright, but a class victory was where my sights were firmly set, and maybe, just maybe, fastest tin top at this event would be a motorsport dream come true.
Congratulations Matt outstanding achievement! Bring on that open wheeler :)
Great video as always Matt, the commentary and emotion really add something extra to it, well done on your results too, very impressive times for a “family wagon” 👌🏼
Huge thanks mate! Was a great event and thought some running commentary would help better tell the story of each run. Funnily, talking it out loud did help settle the pre-run nerves😅
That looks like a fun little track I'd like to run my aw11 around.
It is a great track. I believe it is set up to run 8 different configurations. The Australian was made shorter than the NSW Hillclimb Championship, but both events were a tonne of fun to be a part of.
What modifications have you done to the rs4? Car looks very quick and sounds really good.
Just basic bolt-on’s so far.
Coilovers
Brakes
Front and rear sway bars
Strut brace
Cat-back exhaust
Intake
ECU tune

It's a very quick car and well done. I think there is a mid/high 38 in it. Particularly at turns 2 & 4, I think you should be staying out wide to the right before the corner, turning in later and clipping the apex where the cone is. This will increase your minimum speed mid corner, and your exit speed and you will gain a lot more in the following straight. p.s. I was the flag marshall near the last corner.
Thank you for the feedback. I, too, agree regarding those two turns, and I even told myself on the day that I needed to stay wider but failed in the execution. Something to work on at the next event there in the new year.
How reliable has the rs4 been?
Very! Only issue I've had with it was a small crack in a metal coolant line, but that was easily replaced. Everything else has been faultless. The car sees and oil and filter change every event or two and gets a look over, but 'touch wood' it has been incredibly reliable to date.
