- This benchmarks multi-GPU with the RTX 3090 video cards, testing SLI with a new NVLink bridge, an EVGA 3090 FTW3, and an NVIDIA Founders Edition card. It's not easy to set up, but it does work.

The biggest challenge getting SLI to work with two RTX 3090s was aligning the bridges. You really need to get the same card for ideal mating, because the SLI fingers are not standardized for placement and can be misaligned. Because of this, we ran a second test bench (no motherboard on that one) with PCIe risers, then a whole mess of mounting hardware. It took about 4-6 hours to get it all built and functional, but it worked well once assembled. Of course, we would never recommend this setup, but it was a "because we can" and "let's see what it does" approach. Also #ripjay

He has Nvidia's entire stock in one computer!
The fact that that SLI config utility still uses the Windows XP icons shows you how much they give a shit about SLI these days LOL.
Their control panel system hasn't received a visual update in a very long time. It's also pretty slow to load and save settings in my experience, and generally feels clunky when trying to change something as simple as Vsync or power settings. Per-game performance tuning is pretty slow going, because again it is pretty slow to get the game's profile loaded up. At least adding OpenGL applications as games (think like Minecraft Java edition) actually works properly with Nvidia cards. Of course, my most recent NVIDIA GPU is a 960M so maybe something has changed to improve this.
On an AMD system, you flip a switch and you don't have to click an "apply" button so you can wait while it applies your settings. It just works (with the exception of Minecraft Java Edition at the least. Radeon Chill at the very least definitely doesn''t work, and I haven't really tested the other settings). I don't know enough about the science to tell you whether this is more or less difficult to program and make stable. All I know is that it's easier on the eyes and feels more responsive.
Should see the x server config on nvidia's Linux drivers, they haven't changed that probably since they made it, will give you an idea how much they care about updating their config utility.
@@BBHexKey yep I work in Enterprise IT their vgpu config, driver and licensing server process is a fucking mess
@@PotatotheTroll It's exactly the same on a RTX 2070 so no changes there. I haven't had it crash though which I do hear occasionally happening on AMD (though I'm really not sure if that's just user error). Fun thing is this control panel from Nvidia sometimes also shows me old coverage sample modes for MSAA in older titles which aren't supported by my GPU and therefore render a black screen when opening the game 😆
@@markjacobs1086 AMD's adrenaline suite is godly. Modern and things just work for the most part outside of odd cards having driver/hardware level issues. With my RX480 and Radeon VII (swaps) even I personally havent run into any issues. Personally I wouldn't touch Chill becuase I pushing both cards so not sure if that issue is card specific. It is definitely a notorious thing that most "normal level" users arent keeping other drivers, software, and chipsets up-to-date which do sink their tentacles into gpu stability and the like.
Did have some 'stand in' Nvidia GPU when I had to rush this build into service 3 years ago. Some $40 gpu from best buy. That outdated, laggy, XP era control panel was just that. The same as our ancient Gateway family PC. Shameful, even with all their resources they can't be botherd to bring that into modern times, even on the pro side (just what?) while a company on the brink at the time made a point of fixing the Radeon Control Center among other things.

(Aperture Science) Nvidia , we do what we must because we can
A bridge is actually pretty handy in several 3D rendering scenarios. While you don't get a performance gain, you pool the memory of both cards (with NvLink, not the old SLI). That means you can render larger scenes. This is specifically significant for rendering volumes (clouds, smoke, fire etc.) that are often massive cache files which has to fit all in GPU memory. Hitting 24 gigs of VRAM on a production scene isn't too hard. Same goes for OpenCL accelerated simulations, which are also are getting very popular within 3D packages.
“Some of these games... we’ve even heard of!” Was a much needed belly laugh. Steve you’re my absolute favorite.

you dont have to imagine, its easily calculated. I just ordered a 3090 sli system (ordered for the first time from an SI because I can’t get my hands on GPUs otherwise). I’ve had SLI systems since the 3-way GTX 480 and it’s sad to see SLI support land where it has today. There are some older games I still play with SLI support (Destiny 2, WoW, GTAV) that is hoping to get at close to a locked 4K 120hz. That being said, this will probably be my last SLI system.
As always, great content and just because of this video on SLI I will join your Patreon. Thanks for all that you do in the industry.
@Clayton Jones, I’m also interested in 2* 3090’s but from what I’m reading here I don’t think it will work in older games. Just the ones listed on Nvidia’s website in this video. So unless Nvidia changes things you won’t be able to play most of the older games with SLI support that is currently working on 20 series and older GPU’s. I didn’t know this either until the 3080/90 launch and it ruined my plan of increasing my FPS to the max on newer and older games.
SpideyDiG I don’t think that’s what they are saying in this article. They’ve never broken SLI backwards before so I doubt that would be the case now. I’ll still roll the dice. I can always take one out of the loop and throw it in an eGPU or another system.
I actually think this is exactly what Nvidia did here is ruin backwards compatibility for 3080/90 series in most games won’t support SLI. So you will only be able to play a handful of games listed on Nvidia’s website. None of them I’m too interested in playing so this is a real let down for me and SLI support. I don’t want to have to go out and buy 2* 2080 Ti’s used when I had my mind set originally on a dual 3080/90.
Steve, really enjoyed this.
*In McCoy's voice* "It's dead, Steve."
Camera zooms in on Mirror!Jensun who raises an eyebrow and strokes his goatee. "The suffering is fascinating"
In Spock's voice : "It's SLI Steve, but not as we know it"
I honestly can't even tell if Steve is just trolling us all with that Franken-testbench setup. I am 80% sure he's just screwing with us at this point.
Considering the size of those things, yeah, there's gonna be some fitting issues. lmao~
Thank you for your hard work, dude! I love your videos and your honest reviews. No bias, just straight-to-the-point. Keep it up.
Oh did I miss something ?! Over 1 million subscribers .....
All the best and greetings from Germany

Can't wait for the quad gpu testing!
Steve: Haven't done any actual effort on it
Me: I see the frankenstein setup to make them work
No wonder why RTX 3090 and 3080 always out of stock, Steve bough them all.
would rather have Steve get 100 cards than scalpers get even 1 card.

12:00 Really appreciate the blue countdown bars!
I'd like to see this setup with Can it Run Crysis mode in the Crysis Remaster.
It might actually get to stable 60 FPS :))
@@michalthekind God dammit, not again!
@@michalthekind Yeah, I saw it. Quite dissapointing. And the missing assets / downgrades too.
3090 Dual SLI YOLO Edition^^

THANK YOU!!! For including 1080Ti results. Still wondering @1440p if there is any need to upgrade. But still running a 7700k @5.2. Probably have to do an entire system upgrade at this point...
Memes aside, Strange Brigade does look like it's well-liked. Just not popular in terms of player count.
That's a cool cabinet I've ever seen ....👍
This NEEDS to be featured in one (all) of those "Reacting to PC setups" videos.
