  • So, who are these big armoured soliders anyway? In this video I take a look at the history, creation and organisation of the Space Marines of Warhammer 40,000, and examine their strange and unsettling role within the Imperium.

That image of Tyberos is most certainly the most fantastic depiction of how terrifying it would be to come face to face with a marine in a war zone - innocent or not, an enemy or not, there is bound to be a trauma induced by the sheer terror of an eight foot THING walking towards you, backlit by the flames of a burning city.

I am really interested to see where they go with the story, given how Gulliman seems to think something has gone wrong with how brutal and removed the Space Marines are and how keeping worlds as savage wastelands just to breed warriors (when Ultramar never seems to struggle for worthy child soldiers) is inhumane.
    A lot to explore there.

I listened to the audiobook of "The Crimson Fist" recently. There are a couple of scenes with Rogal Dorn and Sigismund which really give you a sense of the disgust and disdain the Primarchs (and by extension the Emperor I suppose) had for those joining the, then just starting, cult of Emperor worship that would grow into a pillar of the current Imperium.

The adopted their culture from a sacred tome from ancient Terra of the Teutonic Order. Because of that they all have German Aristocratic names and titles. They adapted their old Black Templars faith into a far more Roman Catholic version of the Imperial Cult with Chaplains conducting the Sacrifice of the Emperor against Horus the Arch Traitor and the members of the Chapter drink of the Emperor's Blood, wine in the place of blood, that was shed at the hands of Horus, one time the wine used did turn to actual blood and was recorded as a miracle. They guard the Saras Sector of Space as a Fleet Based Garrison Chapter and due to their massive mandate by the High Lord's of Terra, they have pushed the limit on Astartes far past it's limits.

I have never really understood the exact relationship that they have with Mars. • @Yurt_enthusiast7

Would assume Mars are forced by some ancient decree to train the Marines and in return they get some influence over to the Chapters. The fact that Enginseers would neither be welcomed nor be able keep up with most Astartes chapters is a factor as well.
Then there's the risk if AdMech wouldn't train Tech-marines that the Chapters would begin to experiment and learn about tech on their own

It's important to remember that unlike the thunder warriors, space marines are not meant to be just warriors. They were supposed to be administrators, diplomats, artists, scientists, builders, and some of them might still fulfill those roles. As for their relationship with humans, it's really no different from the knights of older, more civilized cultures. They were entrusted to protect ordinary people, but also think themselves above them with lifetime training separating them from the populace.
As for being heroes, let's not forget that we consider our soldiers and policemen, who are often less educated, less moral and often far less disciplined as our heroes, which tell you a lot about our civilizations.
