  • In this Indonesia Travel Vlog we FINALLY get to try the food you've all been telling us to try - GADO GADO!!! We were also lucky that the restaurant had ketoprak too. One of you even commented for us to go to this exact restaurant! 😱
If you've seen any of our other videos, you know that I don't like meat much and I prefer vegetarian options. Because of that, so many people told us to try gado gado, but we were having the hardest time finding it since we were searching in Jakarta at the end of Ramadan! We looked for street food stalls, checked any small restaurants we saw open, and eventually had to search on google maps. We found the PERFECT place to try gado gado......but it was closed! We ended up finding another gado gado restaurant (Gado Gado Cemara) inside of the Jakarta Citywalk mall which we hoped would be open since it was a mall. We got lucky!! We had the most amazing gado gado there and also ketoprak - our two new favorite foods! Even since we filmed this, we have eaten gado gado SO MANY TIMES!!! It's definitely the best Indonesian food in our opinion!

Fun fact in Indonesia there are other versions of gado gado, the first version is "lotek" this is the Sundanese version of gado gado, it is similar to gado gado but not boiled so it is more like a salad but uses peanuts as the sauce and generally in this version there are basil leaves in the mixture. The second version is "pecel" if I'm not mistaken this is commonly found in Java, pecel is almost similar to gado gado but generally consists of various vegetables and also some regions add flowers that are rich in nutrients. 😂

Tbh, there a lot of vegan option that you try in Indonesia from gado-gado, ketoprak, pecel, urap, kluban, trancam, tahu masak, or to make your life easier you could just go to local warung and saying something like "sayur sama tempe aja" that way they would now that you want veggies and tempe as main protein..

If you like veggies then I suggest you to try "Urap-urap" it's like boiled veggies (usually the green ones) with seasoned grated coconut.
Also try "Pecel". It's also veggies with peanut sauce but the sauce is more aromatic then other peanut sauces as it has Kencur (aromatic ginger) in it and also usually spicy 🙈 also usually served with "Peyek" (savory crackers made of flour with peanuts or anchovies)

Gado-gado is a common menu all over Indonesia, just make sure not too spicy or not spicy when ordered.
Ketoprak is more a local Jakarta type of menu, not all over Indonesia. We call it “bihun” not noodle in it, its made fr rice.
Where ever you go in Indonesia, try the local dishes, some are spicy some are not, better request when you make the order. Beware, in some areas, spicy food is common like in West Sumatera and North Sulawesi.

Check the variants of 'Sayur' in menus, it's all veggies base, but some of them also contain chicken / beef / or shrimp, so make sure ask the vendor does it contain any meats in ingredient. My best pick is ''Sayur Tumis Kangkung' (water spinach stir fry), 'Sayur Bayam' (spinach soup), 'Sayur Lontong' (rice cake in coconut milk with tofu, tempe and chayote), 'Sayur Chap Chay' (Mixed vegetables stir fryed, but it has a small portion of meats), and 'Lotek' (similar to gado-gado, but it's available in Sundanese region only such as in Bandung).

Hi Guys, glad to see your video again enjoying Gado Gado hehehe ( This was one of my recommendation menu to you guys in the previous previous video of yours ).
Now that I am sure you guys love veggie... so be prepared with this new Indonesian magic word for you ... The word is "Sayur" A.K.A Veggie...., so remember, anything with the word "SAYUR" means its primarily or if not entirely veggie base.
And here is the next veggie food hunting game for you while ur in Indonesia if you curious to try all the veggie menu:
    - Sayur Bayam ( Spinach base )
    - Sayur Kangkung ( No translation available, but this is really good one )
    - Sayur Lodeh ( Jackfruit base )
    - Sayur Asem ( Sour base )
    - Sayur Sop ( Soup base, kinda like Tom Kha kai of Thais but different :D )
    - Sayur Labu Siam ( Pumkin Base )
    - Sayur Lombok Ijo ( Green Chilly Base, no worry not spicy )
    - Sayur Sawi ( Mustard base )
    - CapCay ( Chinese Indo full veggie base, and little chicken )
    - Sayur Kacang Panjang ( Long bean base )
    - Trancam ( These are mix little indo salad, bean sprout and stuff )
    - Sayur Terong ( Egg plant base )
Another magic word is "LALAPAN", its like sayur but humbler version, exist only as a complementary herbs and most likely always be served together with heavy fried menu. For example, if you guys buy duck fried, they will give you lalapan as a side dish, together with "Sambals" or home made chilly sauce.
Happy food hunting and enjoy the Indo scene 😄😁, looking forward to see your next video

    • @dzakyadzkar6133
      @dzakyadzkar6133 Год назад +2

      A bit correction
      - kangkung is known as water spinach, and commonly served stir-fried with oyster sauce
      - Lodeh is not all jackfruit base, it's basically soup with coconut milk so a little bit 'murky' but taste nice
      - Sayur labu siam is not a pumpkin, but chayote mostly found in Lodeh
      - Sawi is bok choy
      - Sayur asam is clear soup with a little sour taste from tamarind
Also, try nasi pecel, it's vegetable with peanut sauce on rice, usually served with peyek (Javanese cracker with peanut/shrimp)

It's similar dish with Gado-gado, but Karedok using all raw vegetables and the peanut sauce using this spice called Kencur (an aromatic ginger)... FYI, Ketoprak has more garlicky taste in its peanut sauce with less vegetables in it. Gado-gado using boiled/steamed vegetables, and Karedok using all raw vegetables and Kencur in its peanut sauce...

    10 Indonesian veggie menus.
    1. Pecel (morning glory, Yardlong bean/string bean, beansprout in spicy peanut sauce). It is different with Pecel Lele (fried catfish with sambal a.k.a chilly sauce).
    2. Rujak Petis (morning glory, string beans, beansprout, cucumber, tahu, tempe, cow's nose in shrimp paste peanut sauce)
    3. Gado-gado
    4. Urap (boiled veggies with spicy shredded coconut)
    5. Trancam (raw veggies with spicy shredded coconut)
    6. Karedok (raw veggies with peanut sauce)
    7. Plecing Kangkung from Lombok (morning glory with chilly sauce).
    8. Sayur Asem a.k.a sweet sour veggie soup (morning glory, string bean, corn, peanut and tamarind)
    9. Sayur Lodeh a.k.a young Jack fruit in coconut milk (tahu, tempe, string bean, young jackfruit, Manisa a.k.a light green gourd
    10. Sayur bening a.k.a spinach clear soup (spinach, sweet corn and Manisa) usually eat with corn fritters or salted fish.
Rujak Manis (Fruits+tahu with brown sugar+peanut sauce) Ask for the non spicy sauce.
Drink coconut water to calm the chilly effect, you can buy it fresh or find it in minimart's fridge. For food poison buy Huang Lian Su at the Chinese drug store, one tube consist 12tablets, you just need to take 3 x 1-2tablets a day.

Just to add in yogya there's also Lotek! Again similar to gado2 but different 😂 and I have not seen it in many restaurants. I guess gado2 is more famous. Lotek you find by the Street vendor/ traditional market. And the cook (lady) would crush and make the peanut sauce in front of you on a huuuuugggggeee mm mortar? And you pick what veg and carbs you put in.

'Oncom' is like Tempe's sister and it's Bandung/Sundanese speciality.
If you can find 'Surabi' resto that would be great too, the one with 'Oncom' and Egg is the best.

    Just for information.
In the street vendor, gado-gado and ketoprak only 15.000 to 20.000 rupiah per portion.
Ketoprak = Rice cake, tofu, glass noodle/vermicelli, bean sprouts, garlic, peanut sauce and crackers
Gado-gado = rice cake, veggies, tofu, potato, peanut sauce and crackers
