After months of tender loving care and sleepless nights, a team of 50 trained and experienced care givers hand raising Aurora the baby orangutan at the Houston Zoo has achieved its ultimate long-sought goal -- Aurora's 'adoption' by the Zoo's experienced surrogate orangutan mom Cheyenne. Weather permitting, Aurora and Cheyenne may be seen daily at the orangutan habitat in the Houston Zoo's Wortham World of Primates.
"We couldn't be more pleased and excited that Cheyenne has accepted the role of surrogate mom for Aurora. It is a great joy to see them together," said Assistant Curator of Primates Lynn Killam. "Dozens of dedicated volunteers and our primate care team invested thousands of hours over 9 months to reach this landmark. We are deeply grateful for the volunteer support we received for this effort," added Killam.
I'm so happy she got a Mom 😍
You and your team are doing the most wonderful work to help creation continue.
I had a chance to visit Cheyenne and Aurora on the 15th of Jan. 2012. I was so amazed by this story. Cheyenne is such a good mother and so gentle. You guys did so well on getting this right.

Wow, what a waste of time and money!
Orangutan mothers are some of the most patient, caring and loving mothers on the planet. Houston Zoo and it’s care team have done an amazing job with not only the baby but the other ones too. It started off being about the baby but it soon became evident just how much time and care actually goes in to giving these amazing animals the best possible life. The dedication can’t even be measured as it goes above and beyond. I’m absolutely in love with these animals and I could not express to you more just how grateful I am for all that you do.
P.S.
Just out of curiosity, was Cheyenne able to breast feed this little one or did aurora still need regular bottle feedings?......if they did still need to bottle feed her, how did Cheyenne react to that?
Jillian breast fed her because no other man will suck her sagging juggs
Lovely girl, good job team !

I Love this story!!
Too much luv
Omg! Aurora! You go girlll.
U guys are good ppl 🤗
That would be something magical to witness! Although Cheyenne has already had one of her own, she was still like a human couple never able to have children, then finally getting one through adoption. So was elated the baby's finally here. Cheyenne was just like that all over again and her first daughter was excited and curious too! That's how wonderful life can be. I'm so glad they matched the two of them together! They're so sweet and perfect for each other. You would've never known they weren't naturally mother and daughter. I think big sis is gonna want to show her off and spend time showing her the "ROPES", Pun intended!!😂 Gotta love 'em all!!❤😊
Good job
love this
Is Aurora still bottle fed? Is Cheyenne trained to bring Aurora to the mess wire in order that she may be bottle fed?
Love it 💜
Cheyenne looks very old!

The Houston Zoo needs to step up and provide those wonderful creatures a proper enclosure. Given the fact that orangutans are the largest arboreal mammals you would think that providing them with proper trees would be the first thing on the list? I have no doubt that the staff cares for these animals,so it's a mystery as to why they continue to allow the Orangutans to live like this? The Obesity, sadness and understimulation are a direct result of this terrible environment. It's not like this is a petting zoo in some poor 3rd world nation. These animals are entrusted to a major zoo in the United States and we have the knowledge and resources needed to provide these animals with a better quality of life and we are simply not meeting even the most basic of standards. This isn't just a one off incident either. Many zoos across the country are guilty as well. To see these highly intelligent animals subjected to having to crawl around dirty concrete floors covered in straw is a dam shame. Either step up or have the courage or step aside and send these beautiful beings somewhere else that can house them in an ethically responsible manner.
Couldn't agree more. It's disgusting. No trees or big poles. Not land animals.
quanto chiacchierano.
Damn it, free the orangutan
This poor old out of shape female is at the end of her rope. I'm not sure if she has the energy to decline this relationship that has been thrust upon her. She can barely move at all and now she has to lug this baby around on her poor hurting back. The waste paying 50 caregivers? How about expanding the enclosures, especially the outside with many trees. If you want a mother to act normally and raise her newborn then you need them to feel less like a prisoner and more like an orangutan. More outside time at all zoo's. The zoo where this baby was born is the real culprit, not the mother.
Orangutans are endangered in the wild. U just gonna release them back? Some poacher will find and kill them. Not all zoos are bad. Orangutan meat is very tasty. And orangutans suffer from habitat loss in the wild too.
+mickeyro I'm not into zoo's either but they are slowly diminishing also from the trees being cut down to produce palm oil..they have no home anymore
Kill it !
This zookeeper should try being force bred, allowed to get obese, then made to raise another captive against her will. Perhaps she'd be careful in saying it's "bonding."
She’s just a worker. She doesn’t pay for the habitat. She’s doing the best she can. Troll somewhere else
Cheyenne seems a bit overweight
Eingles bay
Какие-то кучи шевелятся, у меня тряпка для пола и то цивильнее выглядит.
