These 6.2's are great motors, and they have a reputation for being bulletproof, but since we have one that's got forced induction and is putting out over SIX HUNDRED HORSEPOWER we thought we were some of the most qualified to tell you all how well the 6.2 stands up, not just in daily use but in extreme conditions that a 600 horsepower Raptor lives in. So join Uncle Jake and Dr. Torque as we dive into the rumored valve spring issues, the what the heck happened rocker arm problem and the overall general reliability of these motors. Grab something delicious to drink and sit back, relax, as we talk Is Ford's 6.2 V8 really bulletproof? Valve Spring and Rocker Arm Discussion!

These are the guys who make some performance upgrades for the 6.2 that were mentioned in the video. When we spoke to them in late summer of 2021, their springs could not be used without their cam, which is what kept us from using it since we can't upgrade the cam on our rig because it already has a Roush tune on it.

Was just coming to pin a comment for you guys and realized we got a thumbs down in the first 3 hours of posting this video 😂. We don't care, so awesome to get responses! No worries! We're happy to hear from you guys regardless of if its a thumbs up or thumbs down. But we do like thumbs up better if you're torn on which to use. Keep in mind y'all we love these motors and Uncle Jake absolutely LOVES his Raptor. For those of you considering buying a 6.2 or wondering about how bulletproof they are, this video will shed some light based on our personal experiences and the research we've done. And pay no attention to Dr. Torque, he was dropped on his head as a kid and landed in the trunk of a Mopar and he's been a die-hard Mopar fan ever since!
Good engine except for those springs! Nice to know this info going into a 6.2 purchase. Boy Im glad that didnt have a piston strike. Hopefully as this gets more and more attention someone will come out with an upgrade we can get thats just a drop in replacement.
Hey buddy I have the same truck and I was wondering if you remember whether or not the valve spring you changed was for the intake or exhaust valve. Also what were the symptoms before fixing?
I believe it was the exhaust side. No real warning whatsoever, just started sounding like it was missing super bad and barley idled. Fortunately both times I didnt keep running it shut it down. It was a super close call both times. Still cant believe it didnt ruin my engine.
Yep I have gen 1 Raptor and 6 months after buying used with 68k miles I had valve spring go, normally not a major issue. Weellll it threw the valve in the cylinder and gernaded the motor. New 6.2 from Ford was $10K. Good news, I had a warranty on it through Carvana lol. Got brand new 6.2 with new upgraded cams from ford. So since it was out we put in a whipple supercharger on it. So now I have a 2014 gen 1 with 80K miles on the truck and 10 on brand new motor. So yeah valve springs are the weak link in the 6.2.
Good info, thank you. We're working on getting better springs but the only company we've found that makes improved springs won't sell them without their cam upgrades, which we don't want. We're working on getting them to agree to make a standalone kit that upgrades the springs and adds the cam reinforcers without changing the cams. We'll keep y'all posted. Thanks for commenting!
Going through this right now, 105k on my ‘14 with a Whipple for 60k of them. Valve spring failed, dropped a valve and the rest is history. Getting a new motor from Jasper and had the same convo’s with Livernois since the springs scare me now. I may use their rocker bar braces, but dang wish they or someone would make a better spring to work with the stock cams!
@@MotorsandMischief what's the company name?
Use hotshot secret stiction eliminator to avoid this problem it cleans and restores lubricity that causes loud ticking proven on 5.4 triton update roller rocker with bigger lube holes
We'll check it out, thanks so much for commenting!
Wow. Doctor Torque's paranomia was going full tilt that day.
We had to look up that word. It means using one word when you mean another word. We feel like this whole channel suffers from paranomia
Love the tommy boy reference lol
So what valve springs and rocker arms did you end up getting? I also have a Roush supercharged raptor and have thought about getting new ones as a preventative measure. FYI, I think Livernois Motorsports has upgraded springs and arms available for the 6.2.
Hey Brad, thanks for commenting! We ended up going with stock springs and rockers. We actually had an in-depth conversation with Livernois when we were trying to find performance springs for this truck. At the time (this was a couple months ago) Livernois told us their springs needed to work with their cam, and since we have the Roush Performance tune on the truck, we can't change the cam without getting a custom tune (per our conversation with Roush when we were trying to determine of they had changed anything like rev limit that might have contributed to our failures - fyi they confirmed they do not change the rev limit). In looking at Livernois' website now, we see they do list the springs separately, but we'll need to contact them to see if those springs will work with a stock cam or if they still require their custom cam. If anybody here knows anyone at Livernois Motorsports, ask them to comment here with the answer!
@@MotorsandMischief So it won’t work with stock cams?
@@atx-cvpi_99 No you will have to pull you cams and us theirs. They have a bad ass 6.2 build you can drop in and get 800HP lol
The livernois springs will work on a stock cam. I have them on 2015 f350 with 30k miles on them since install. No issues
This isnt what i wanted to hear(😆) but good to know just in case. my ‘13 raptor has 170k miles no ticking or odd noises thankfully, its also the NA 6.2 if that makes a difference. I wont run anything under 89 octane and i use the motorcraft oil/filter. If theres better oil or filters id definitely swap over to it, i want to keep this truck for a long time… keep up the great videos guys👍🏻
The NA makes a big difference, there's just no possible way we can go from 400 hp to 600 hp without putting additional stresses on the motor. For the filter, we've run a lot of different oil filters on things over the years and between our own experience and independent tests we've seen on RUclips and various review articles, K&N's Performance Gold filter gets consistent high marks. But we also just put a Motorcraft filter on our Project F-250. The thing that makes the absolute biggest difference you're probably already doing: high quality synthetic oil. We have an 8.1 liter LS that has had Mobile1 its whole life and at nearly 250k, it runs like its brand new. Thanks so much for commenting!
Best oil right now off the shelf is Penzoil Ultra Platinum unless you step up to Amsoil, Redline, etc.
I had one of those rocker arms break in my 2011 F-250, but it was the bearing that rides on the cam lobe instead of the arm itself breaking in half like yours. Started making an occasional "clunk" sound and I feared the worst, but thankfully I shut it down and dug into it right away and was thrilled to find it before it wiped out the cam. Scary stuff for sure
Man that's crazy! Good job catching it before it grenaded everything. We've never seen one crack in half like ours, super weird. Thanks for commenting!
@@MotorsandMischief Guess I'm not pulling the trigger on the Lariat Limited I want. I was thinking of changing out all the springs. I had a spring break on a 4.6 DOHC in a continental. Very uneventful, a few hours to swap out.
@@MotorsandMischief The 4.6 Repair spring was a beehive.
@@alb12345672 this failure is really rare there are many 6.2's with 4-500k miles out there.
@@semajniffirg230 I own one now actually. A Platinum F150 Max Tow. Priced too good to pass up. Got with 185K, put a ton of amazing miles on it. And it whatever exhaust it has, it sounds like a racecar just not that loud. Towed 10.5K lbs a few times, effortless.
I’ve worked on your cars years ago 🤩
Oh yeah?! The Raptor? We want to talk to you!
A theory about keeping old springs: If it came out of a truck at 130,000, that wouldn't matter to me because you don't know how long the truck was at idle. Trucks that drive in the city sitting at light would certainly have more idle time than one out in the country.
Possibly. Although we grew up working on farms and we used to idle the farm trucks a LOT when using the PTO winch so it would probably depend on what job the truck had in the country. But you bring up a good point for sure. Thanks for commenting!
Dang, Dr Torque is a Ford hater. Sorry the Raptor is such an iconic truck there buddy.
Dr. Torque isn't so much a Ford hater as he is an Uncle Jake harrasser. Note he owns a 67 Mustang that he claims belongs to his wife but into which he dropped a 5.0 out of a Fox body. We also have photographic proof of him owning his own Mustang, so don't let the act fool you!
Dr Torques's new neighbor told him that he liked his 68 Mustang, and Mrs Torque yelled, "it's not his car! It's mine." And any photos can be doctored.
What’s the mileage when failures occurred?
What up J Hunter! Mine occurred at 132k but you can find it happening under 100k and over 200k in the forums so it can be really spread out. Personally, I think its around 150k plus or minus a bit where its occurring the most. How many miles are on yours?
Man I just bought my 2014 with 80k and wanting to selling and get back into a tundra 😂
Well Toyota has some pretty nasty recalls on the Tundra's right now, 2022 and up trucks are eating engines and transmissions. Very un-Toyota-like. You might be glad you have the Raptor right now.
The Dr. sure sounds like your garden variety Chevy guy.
HAHA! I will tell him that. I personally also like Chevy, but he wouldnt touch a Chevy with a 10 foot pole. He is strictly a dodge man.
I have the same Raptor, 2013 Roush 6.2L with 149k. Now I'm worried..
Since those two fixes we have been good so far. Have you had any trouble so far?
Hard to tell from my phone video but that spring looked to me like it got very hot , going by the color at the break ?
Pushrod engines aren't really meant for high rpm right ? I really don't know I'm trying to learn about this engine .
What oil are you using , is a higher zinc oil better for pushrod ?
Reason I'm so inquisitive is I just bought a 21 250 with this engine. Great video and have a good holiday 👍
Interesting comment. Both times we broke it (the spring and the rocker) the engine was at idle or very low rpm, truck at about 30 mph. The truck runs Mobile 1 synthetic and gets changed pretty frequently. From what we can tell from research, its a manufacturing flaw in the rocker. Certainly not common but it does happen. Thanks for commenting and we hope you enjoy the heck out of your new truck!
I wouldn't stress too much, run good oil, change it every 5k miles. The 6.2 is one of the best engines ford ever made. For every one with a broken spring you hear about on the internet there are probably 100,000 of them out there still running strong on original valve springs.Think about how many super duty pickups there are on the road, we're talking millions of engines.
My 2017 with 54000 just happened
Ah man that sucks! That's way low mileage to have that happen. Hopefully yours caught itself like ours did and your engine didn't eat itself!
I had 159k on my 6.2l blow the timing chain guides to pieces. Cost 4k to fix. Bullet proof nah
Ouch, that sucks. We've dropped a valve TWICE in this and both times got lucky and it caught on the spring. Haven't had an issue since we upgraded it but we feel like its not really an upgrade, its just pushing the inevitable down the road a bit.
The problem is there is no accountability or fixes for sub-standard parts. Who set the specs for these springs, who manufactured them, and why are they not coming out with stronger springs? Of course looking at this we need to replace all of them after 100K miles, and every 100K miles. It's not bulletproof so don't beat it to death like many are doing. It's not super duty, it's just duty. Otherwise it's a pretty decent truck. Dodge is much worse and Chevy's have a lot of parts fall apart after 10 years, so .... pick your poison.
Its getting worse too, with continued supply chain and labor issues. We've had more factory parts fail out of the box in the last year or so than in the previous 20. Thank you for commenting!
Why would you have tubby the ford hater on with you? Obviously he is a authority on ford engines, and we all know they are the only one’s that have any valve train problems.
Dr. Torque isn't a Ford hater per se, he owns an incredible 65 Mustang with a 5.0 conversion that is just beautiful. Dr. Torque is more of an Uncle Jake harasser, and we're confident if Uncle Jake owned something Mopar, Dr. Torque would figure out a way to harass him about it while somehow making it clear that Mopars in general are not the problem and Uncle Jake is the specific issue at hand. And he is an authority, they don't just hand out those doctorates to anyone you know. Thanks for commenting!!
Jasper Engines are junk
You are not the first person to say that, for sure. Check the other comments for some good alternatives for those who don't like Jasper. For us, we love this shop and they take good care of us, so we went with the shop more than the engine but we'll see how it holds up. Thanks for the comment!
