Very good head. I still use it to record bands at the studio. For me the trick is to treat it like the amps it emulates. For example I recorded an album with the vox as a mesa rectifier. First I went to mesa's website and downloaded the rectifier manual. I followed the instructions as if I had the real thing. I got a killer sound and then tracked the guitars. If I set all gain to 10, it will sound like trash. But then so does a mesa rectifier, a peavey 5051 or a Laney GH100L. I have access to these three so I've checked. Also for me the speaker is like 50% of the sound. A bad cab will sound like trash, no matter what head drives it. Finally, the presence knob is vital to any head's sound. I've set mine halfway because I use the Marshall MF400 cab which is really bright.

I have the 2x12 combo version of this but I like to plug it into a 4x12 cab, but that combo amp is heavy as hell. I found a head used for $250. Thinking about picking it up!

    Thank

It's too digital, might blow the speakers if you actually jam on it, I finally found a foot pedal that's analog, and that keeps it on all the time so the digitalness of it doesn't make the speakers blow because it causes the amp to stay on all the time instead of shutting off everytime there's a low volume in the sound, which is the main problem with all these digital devices now days, especially these amps, you would of figured the makers would of found a solution to the problem by now, but they don't really care, because if you blow the amp you will just buy another one and continue to make them rich like Chinese.

What you are describing about the low volume sound is not a problem. It is called a "noise gate" and it has a purpose. If it bothers you, there are instructions in the manual of how to turn it off or reduce its sensitivity.
Blowing the speakers depends on your choice of speakers and connections. The amplification circuit is analog. Only the amp and FX emulations are digital. So there is no way the digital circuits can blow a speaker. As for the analog part, again read the manual and choose the right speakers and ohm settings on the back of the head. Like you should with any guitar amp, especially the analog ones.
If you put an analog pedal on the chain, it doesn't make the signal less digital, because no matter what you do, a part of the chain is always digital. Maybe there are some high frequencies that you don't like, and your pedal is softening the sound on the way in. You could also reduce those on the head's EQ or turn down the gain a bit. With high gain settings, there is often a buildup of saturation on the high frequencies and that sounds bad. This can happen on a tube amp as well. If you read the manual of mesa's rectifier, they suggest to keep the gain at 6-7 at most to avoid the high frequency shrill. Also on the back of the vox there is a presence knob exactly for this reason. You can use it to soften the highs.
