I just found out about the new album a few days ago and I am utterly in awe of it. Elfman is one of my favourite musicians and that's largely because he just doesn't really let himself care about how we perceive his art. He hopes we'll like it I'm sure, but that's not the point of creating it. He creates what he has to in the moment as an artist, for himself, and then he puts that out into the world. He isn't afraid of our perceptions, or he doesn't allow himself to be. He isn't afraid to push the envelope and mold it into what he wants it to be. I will admit the first time I listened to Big Mess I went in hoping for the sort of music he did back in the 80's (sort of an Oingo Boingo sound but predominantly his solo album from back then, that is a gem of an album) and I was initially disappointed to find that it had a heavier, darker sound. But once I had set aside those expectations and really listened to it on it's own I was struck by it's beauty and how true it all felt (and it has some of the most striking lyrical work I've ever seen.) This song in particular really stuck out to me. The idea of falling apart and losing your marbles but you say it's fine and that you're happy is something I connect with heavily, and I think this song captures how that can feel, especially at your lowest point. Truly some beautiful work.
I had the same journey with his new album. I found it difficult and a bit dark and unpleasant, initially. But I think it's a strong album. You have to be willing to drop the happy ska tone of his Oingo Boingo days.
I couldn't help thinking on this day, the anniversary of 9/11 of his crumbling face at the beginning, like the crumbling of the Twin Towers. I agree with you about Elfman as an artist. This video is amazing! It's hypnotic. I love it's honesty.
My cat seems to like this song. He got all close and cuddly when I played it. He normally only behaves that way when I play Beethoven on piano so that’s a huge compliment coming from him.
First time I saw this I literally stared, mouth open, in absolute horror for 4 minutes and 35 seconds. The second time, I smiled and sang along, feeling nothing but love towards Danny for being able to put his, my (and everyone else's) feelings about this year (and the several previous years), into a fucking rocking song. Thanks man.
Totally brilliant. The feel, the lyrics, the meaning underneath. This is the most impressive thing I have seen in ages. He is an artist in every sense of the word.
I don't think this IS a happy song. It's the very antithesis of all those catchy "happy" tunes, songs to make us forget how bad we're being screwed, sarcasm like Kurt Cobain's line "I'm so happy, cuz today I found my friends, they're in my head." he was not a happy camper. I for one am not going to pretend I'm happy, I'm sick of this Covid crap and all the other depressing shit in the world, but I'm not going to give up either, that's what the world wants , for people like me to just get over it or go away . During 2020 the suicide rate jumped up to about 300%!! it's suicide prevention/awareness month, if you know someone who has been affected by suicide, don't try to cheer them up, don't dish out drivel about how God only gives us as much as we can handle, or it's gonna be ok. No, have respect for the person who is feeling unhappy, and respect their feelings. If things are shitty, it's ok to feel like crap. Just don't wallow in that mess for too long. I was not expecting a surprise music video by Danny Elfman capturing the mood of this year, but here we are.
This is the "They're Coming to Take Me Away" for this generation.

The slower part to this is way more like his orchestral work mixed with some sort of uncharted territory we haven't really heard yet. It's both familiar and yet kind of without a definite precedent. Anyway, I love it.
@@ryansimons4523 Parts of it reminded me of "What You See" from the Only a Lad album
This looks like one of those deep web videos from 2009. I love it!
I honestly believe that’s what Mr. Elfman was going for.
Kinda reminiscent of Garry’s Mod with an updated Source Engine or something.
This is some of the most forward thinking progressive rock out there today, this guy is a genius.
This song pretty much sums up 2021 in a nut shell. I will say thou if Penny Wise ever took a hit of acid and started a band it would sound like this.
Them: How twisted do you want the video?
Danny Elfman: Yes.
Yeah you commented the same comment lol
No nightmares will be had at all ☹️
Them: How twisted do you want the video?
Danny Elfman: Have you heard of Cool3dWorld?
Storyboard meeting:
"What if Danny Elfman but too much?"
He turns his own skin into a lampshade 😳
Can't wait to show this to my whole family 👍

Happy birthday, Master! 🤘
I am a huge fan and have been since the Oingo Boingo days. As always Elfman is creative, innovative and makes music that is out of the box. Outside the lines of mainstream which is what I like.
i love how utterly demented this song and video are. it's horrible to look at but also addicting to look at. it's a wonderful fever dream.
Beautifully disturbing visuals . I remember having Music for a Darkened Theater on cassette and listening to it until the title list/prints
faded to where you couldn't read it anymore and the tape itself broke. I love this song.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the lyric: "Snap chat- Rotting rats- Minecraft- Cheerios
Netfiix- Bag of tricks- soothe my soul"
no we arent.
“Snap - Rotting - Mine - Cheery - Net - Bag of - Soothe - Soul”
@@virginia5180 yeah tbh it’s going to really date the song after awhile
poetry
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 found you just as i always do in anything related to danny elfman
When your life starts falling apart, this is the video to come to.
I can’t stop listening to this the man’s a genius
I have been a fan of Danny Elfman since his Ongo Bongo days
Hello, how are you doing? It is nice seeing you here.
This song is almost a year old now and I’m listening to it for Halloween yet again!
Trent Reznor and Marylin Manson be watching this goin “When did we become more family friendly than Danny Elfman?!” 😂 Ironic case in point, Manson’s version of Nightmare Before Xmas was playing in IKEA pre Halloween. 🤭
They both are boring to toddlers
@@bennievargas2673 Yea, toddlers are wild.
@@briang.2218 Consider me one of them
reznor and manson being lumped into the same group makes me uncomfortable lmao
And now Trent collabed with Elfman...
