John is exquisite. Not just (clearly) in looks, but talent on the bass, and even his shyness here in the early days is very, very endearing. Intriguing... quite paradoxical to that evident shyness that he has admitted to in his book, I found it incredible to find out in retrospect what an absolute driving force he was behind starting the band, designing the art graphics for their posters and being the member of the band with the vision. Duran Duran had described themselves as the most unlikely yet sublime blend of "punk, disco, funk, glam", well I think we can really look big time to JT for this development of the sound, as he was the one who did indeed embrace fully the two opposing genres of punk and disco, which was a quite niche and unpopular thing to do in the late 1970's. Thank goodness he did, as Duran's sound reflects this gorgeous and powerful blend of influence perfectly. The self described "funky punk". I think many wrote him off as a "pretty boy" (he's exceptionally STUNNING physically), but he really had the talent too, and is by far one of the top bassists of the 80's, with a sound that is very innovative yet sadly at times under appreciated by critics. Luckily, many serious music fans know well and understand that John is absolutely an innovative and seriously killer bassist, with that insanely riveting staccato style, arguably one of the absolute coolest and most enigmatic figures that the 80's (and late 70's!) birthed. Thank goodness Nigel took off the glasses and became John, but I really feel a strong soft spot for that gorgeous young fella Nigel who was the ultimate driving force of the band's beginnings.
John Taylor has gotta be the cutest boy from that scene. Depeche mode is my favorite band, and even I just can't get enough of John Taylor. and that kid behind them is geeking me out

Duran Duran has powered for decades upbeat and innovative music that has withstood the test of time and made them an Icon of Rock and Roll. Their talent is phenomenal and needless to say full of great lyrics and out of this world instrumental sounds, from the likes of Nick Rhodes, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor, John Taylor and of course the maestro Simon
Totally agree DD are hugely talented and underatted there music is so beautifully crafted together with healing powers so lovely and relaxing to listen too. There still going in 2020/21 brilliant I knew back then they had something special and unquic and recording there 15th studio album brilliant.

Rio (My favorite song from these gentlemen) was released in May 1982 I believe? In this interview they said it wasn't even April of 1982 yet. At this time rio must have been in the making or not even written yet
Great video clip, but, for the record, this is from late November / early December 1981 as they announce the Careless Memories UK tour. Thank you for posting it!
I remember this very well on Saturday morning Im a huge fan of Duran Duran Simons reaction to Spandu Ballet is priceless as its a pity Nick wasn't there his answer would be a one off as he said,'if that's all that they can come up with' meaing there debut song, 'we have nothing to worry about'.Great answer and Duran Duran didn't he was absolutely right. Duran Duran came out a few months after Spandau Ballet in 1980 and DD are celabrating 40+ years in the music sceen. Tony Haddley has a great voice no dought about that as he said just recently he should have joined for DD no hope Tony, Simon was their best choice...
For some reason John's way of speaking (accent) and the way he was the founder of the band and the way he speaks about that, reminds me so much of early 60's Brian Jones interviews about The Rolling Stones!
You can tell that little turd in the arctic jumper was getting on John's nerves! he was basically sat on his shoulder... not that i'm jealous of course
I was about 19 I had a massive crush on Simon le Bon i thought he was the most handsomest man in earth, he was very good looking and all of them hugly talented. I was working overtime on Saturday and I woke my sister up to remind her to record it she wasnt amused. Im still a huge fan of there work 40+ years can't wait to see them in Dublin 2021 where has all the years gone....
Agree! i dont know how could SB were ever considered rivals/competitors to DD. I mean, has SP ever played in the US? Let alone have they ever filled a theater? And notice I'm not saying a stadium....
I think the rivalry was more to do with being hot young guys in their twenties, similar fashions early on, plus both growing out of the new wave/ new romantic movements in opposing areas of the UK - specifically, London and Birmingham. But I think they were quite friendly with each other, particularly John with members of SB. There was even a famous game show on tv at that time where the bands played a quiz opposite each other, with Duran Duran winning, such was the media's emphasis on their rivalry. The music however was different, and obviously Duran Duran had more sustained success worldwide for a longer period, and have definitely sold more records - to the point I think they are one of the highest UK selling artists of all time, something like 70 million. However, I wouldn't call Spandau Ballet one hit wonders. 'True' is one of the most played US radio hits of all time, possibly more than any DD hit, and certainly in the UK they had success with other hits like 'Musclebound', 'Through the Barricades', 'Gold' and 'Chant No.1'. Plus Spandau appeared at Live Aid and on the band aid record like DD. But yes, ultimately, a true rivalry was more early on.
I think I remember reading in a interview somewhere with JT that he never liked SLB for the first couple of years of the band because of something like jealousy because of the attention Simon got for being the new guy and like taking over, but they ended up being good friends.
it's the other way around actually. simon is the one who's jealous of john. you can read andy taylor's book, he talks about how simon jealous that john got all the female attention and how EMI chose john to be the icon and published him more than other members as EMI think john is the most handsome and photogenic of all duran's members. andy says simon got jealous because he is the singer but the record company promoted john first and made him pin up boy to attract female fans. andy also talk about how simon so jealous when DD met princess diana and princess diana walked past simon and went directly to john. there is a picture where you can see simon glaring at john with so much jealousy when princess diana greets john. simon think he is the one that should get all the spotlight and attention since he is the singer but it turns out it's john who gets all of that. however as the time went by they put aside their rivalry and became good friends. although, simon still shows his jealousy of john whenever john gets more attention and simon hides his jealousy by teasing john or making snarky comments. you can watch video of jonathan ross with DD. you can see how simon face turned red when jonathan compared simon to john said john is better looking than simon while simon looks like a farmer and simon is threatened by john's good look
In an interview John when he was 24 said they both were jealous of each other because John said he founded the band and resented the fact that Simon got attention for being the singer while Simon was jealous of him for the attention John got when Simon is the singer and should get more noticed but one night they got drunk and admitted it to each other and after that they got along unbelievably.
No, we won’t solve everything wrong with the world, but ,if we can try to make it a little friendlier , it could give the younger ones a good start towards something positive. That is what nearly all parents should want for their kids. Leaving a good influence for others to follow. That is my goal, anyway.
John is exquisite. Not just (clearly) in looks, but talent on the bass, and even his shyness here in the early days is very, very endearing. John's faint Brummie accent...
Really?, I can't hear it all :\
At 1.26 when asking John did he think the music changed after Simon joined the band. When John replied 'No, not really'.. the look on Simons face!!! 😲
John says they start the tour in Canterbury which was Monday December 7th 1981.
So this recording is probably Saturday 5th December 1981.
John Taylor with his Brummie accent. That’s gone now.
