It's a strong testament to Barristan Selmy's renown that when he was dismissed from Joffrey Baratheon's Kingsgaurd, Renly and Stannis left a position open in their respective Kingsguards for Ser Barristan. King Renly finally gave the position to Brienne of Tarth.
tbf, that's also a political move. Being backed by Robert's Lord Commander would be a huge boost for either brother's legitimacy

Knowing all his achievements, I understand why the actor who played him in the show was pissed about his premature death.
I guess they foreshadowed how they would kill great characters just for shock value and subverting expectations.OR probably D&D forgot who Ser Barristan was.
I didn’t care about his death in the show cuz he’s still alive and well in the books.
When he died in the show my response was “....meh”
Gaunter O'Dimm ser barristans death was a disgrace to the charcater by the writers. Ser Barristan deserved the death he’d hoped for

I think he was as selfish and hypocritical as most of the important people in King's Landing.
He betrayed his King as much as Jamie did by joining the usurper, instead of following the remaining Targeryan family. Only when he was removed from the King's guard, when his comfortable delousing life ended, did he find the strength to go East.
Winner of tourneys. Slayer of dark knights. Savior of damsels. Rescuer of kings and queen. Barristan is a true fairyale's white knight.

Except when he stood by and watched Ned be arrested after being named Regent. He even said, "But those Are The Kings Words." Indicating he recognized Robert's orders must be obeyed in that matter.
Tywin should've been like "Hey Aerys your son will never marry my daughter" and Aerys be all "Ha jokes on you Tywin son you will marry Cersei" and Tywin be all "Ahhh foiled again by King Aerys"

Robert literally smashed his breastplate which eventually broke Rhaegar's Ribs and died. It is said that he desperately tried to utter the word "Lyanna" before he died. Gosh, I'd give anything to witness Robert's prime days!

Barristan has always been a favorite, and the more I learn about him, the more I love and respect him. Of all the swords in all the kingdoms, I would choose Barristan Selmy as mine.

He seems so cool, but hes one of those characters that put their honour and their oaths before peoples lives. In my opinion, Jamie is the most honourable kingsguard, because he did the right thing even when it was hard.
Nah. Jaimie was a piece of shit. No hero. While he did take matters into his own hands, for the better, he did father children with his own sister. He did attempt to murder Bran. He did kill his own kin to escape to Cersei. Jaimie was many things, but honourable? Lol no. Not by a long shot.

I never hyped up like others about Dany ,Jon and Arya. Instead i liked Hound , Brienne , Jaimie ,House Mormont ,House Tyrell .. a man who won duels more than any man alive at this point , Ser Barristan.
I HATED so many of the "not main character" deaths, like Ser Barristan, and Lord Commander Mormont.
Without Tywin showing restraint at Duskendale, or Selmy being as good as he was, the events in GOT/ASOIAF may never have happened.
Man, he was really hard on himself, guess that's why he was one of the best.

instead of prequels of the long night, they should do mini-series about characters like Barristan Selmy. This guy should be season 1.
Barristan Selmy is one of the ULTRA RARE characters in this world who has served and fought in the service of 3 to 4 different Kings, and their Regimes. He is also one of the few people in ASOIAF who is personally responsible for changing the world, and ending feuds that lasted generations.
I mean, imagine how different Westeros would be if he never rescued The Mad King from Duskendale and Raegar became king in 277 AC. There most likely would have never been a Civil War since Raegar being a King would most likely have "Rights" over choosing whom he wants to marry, and IF Lyanna was even betrothed to Robert at this time, it would have been called off......right?
Also with him personally ending the last Blackfire Rebellion on the Stepstones was a HUGE win for him. If Maelys Blackfire would have escaped, he could have just visited a brothel in Lys, and knocked up half of the dam "Pleasure House", resulting in who knows how many more bastards and future "Kings" trying to stake their claim.
Tywin thought it was beyond stupid that Barristan was dismissed from jofferys kingsguard, that was funny as fuck when he called that out in front of his daughter

With the way Barristan stood by while Aerys committed his atrocities because it was his 'duty', I wonder if Jofferey didn't get rid of him, would Barristan have just stood by again as Jofferey beat Sansa? Would his conscience have caught up to him? He didn't do anything before with Rhaella, and duty prevailed over honor and justice under Aerys' reign, so why not under Jofferey's?.......
that's the issue with honour. its not doing the right thing its following a very strict code of rules. case and point Jamie has no hounour yet he is a better person. yet now selmy has no vows and picks his master so we shall see

Point of interest: In books -Danny just set up Drogo's pyre. She asked for pledges of her blood riders and Jurah. She promised Jorah "she would give him a sword the world has never seen; made of dragonfire and valerian steel". Do you have any comment? Would love to hear your thoughts.

thank you for this amazing breakdown of an amazing character that the TV series did no justice to. I could relate to him not being able to sleep well later in life. I had gotten out of the Army in 2010 and around 2015-2016 I noticed stuff that I put down deep and tried not to think about would disturb my sleep. PTSD.
I love Barristan Selmy! His regret towards not being a better knight against prince Rhaegar is kind of sad. I dont think he should be regretting this. He should regret that he saved Aerys in the first place! But as a white cloak, his honour would be put into question if he at least didnt try to save his king. Such tragedy.

Ser Barristan's story is really sad. He lived the life of a heroic knight, the embodiment of the ideals in songs that're so rarely reflected in truth, and despite all of his heroics and great deeds, he looks back with shame. His reward for being Barristan the Bold was regret, for not having bested Raegar. He blamed himself for the rebellion (and probably for Raegar's dead childen, by extension) and for Ashara Dayne's death for "not being good enough" despite being one of the greatest knights who ever lived.
It is essentially Maryland. She be flipped inverted as a harlot lay, but there she be. All the colours of the flag for the state as well.
I wish he would have backed Ned a little more towards the end there

I know the rest is covered in the books and show, but after since his story already has a conclusion, his post White Cloak days in Essos would make it complete. Once the show and books are over, the complete histories would make a great record. Rawrist rules!!
Gods Barristan is a FUCKING BADASS. Imagine this man and Brynden Tully on your Kingsguard. You wouldn't need any other members because those two could beat back an army by themselves

Turned a Blindeye to Jaime & Cersei's Twincest Bastards (or choose not to see)
Should have tried to rescue Ned Stark from the Black cells (had time to fill out the white book) OR Fought for Rob
OR held his Oath to Robert Baratheon - Head of House Baratheon- and Serve Stannis as the True Heir
Goes to serve Danny instead - his oath to the Targs ended the day he was Pardoned and knelt to and Joined Robert's Kingsguard, If not, could have gone to Danny and Viserys when they were children and helped Ser Willem Darry protect them - but there wasn't a nice white cloak and a comfy bed doing that then.
Totally agreed this is what Martin is been trying to imply is that Honourable man like Barristan, can sometimes do dishonorable acts. Honor is just kinda dangerous ideas to keep.

Right then in there I am so surprised that Tywin would ever allow Jamie to join the kings guard forsaking his name sake and legacy. In Tywin’s mind it was probably all temporary and another part of his long term game of actually ruling and calling the shots regardless of who is king.
It can't be complete if Baristan is still alive in the books. But still I love this video.

why would selmy resent jaime? selmy is aware of all of aerys' "transgressions" to the point of regretting having rescued him. jaime saved everybody from being engulfed in wildfire by slaying the king. selmy, of all people, should appreciate what jaime did.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that the way the show killed off Sir Barristan is total BS. I mean he bragged that he could cut down all the other Kingsguard, and they were all afraid of him. He is widely considered of the best swordsman alive in Westeros. But he gets slaughtered in some back alley by the stupid Son's of the Harpy who aren't even great warriors.
This is worse than the discrepancy between the descriptions of the Unsullied fighting prowess in the books and how easy they are killed on the show.
The way they did Sir Barristan is my biggest problem with the show!
The only thing that I liked about his show death is that he went out fighting the way he wanted to. He said in both the books and show;" I am a knight. I shall die a knight."
