As one of those twenty lucky beta testers, this was a great trip down memory lane. Thanks, Chippy!
A few little things I recall from those days include suggesting a section of the trailer where the player uses the Ivy Whip to travel up a corruption chasm. I thought it would be a super cool scene to include.
Speaking of Grappling Hook stuff, have you ever hooked to a door and opened it and shot forward? Early on, doing that would send you astronomically far. I think it might have even crashed your game, though I'm not sure on that detail.
I remember Redigit showing off the Rocket Boots for the first time... except our games weren't updated so it looked super glitchy, lol.
I also recall Redigit asking me if I had any name ideas for the "eye boss". I couldn't think of anything though, so I'm not sure when Cthulhu came into the picture.
Also, shoutouts to Red Yoshi, who was a sprite artist early on who is a bit forgotten, I feel. He was responsible for enemy designs such as Skeletron.
To this day, I still don't know who griefed my pirate ship on the beta server, lol. It would be cool if Redigit decided to release those worlds someday! There were about ten or so in total before release. We'd get a new one every time there was some significant world generation additions.

that kind of thing can easily destroy your entire game because first impressions are incredibly important and a lot of people would have no idea that it was just a very early version of the game and not what was supposed to release

Bought it for PC, played it for about 17 hours straight, then decided it was too addicting for me to keep playing. Wasn't until 2018 that I finally tried it again, with the same result. All this time, I had never played it multiplayer. In 2019 my younger brother got into it and he got me to play multiplayer with him. I got way into it both multiplayer and single player and now of all of my steam games I've logged more hours in Terraria than any other by a factor of five.

And then I fell in love... this game has been with me through all these years. I've made so many memories and it's one of my ultimate comfort games. I played it with friends, I played it solo, I played it after a bad break up, I try to introduce it to friends constantly, and I just recently picked it up again!!! I will never get tired of the game and I love ReLogic so much for all the hard work and love they put into this gem.

I remember like 5 or 6 years ago I had terraria mobile 1.2 and I played it ALL THE TIME. I got the enchanted sword pretty early on and I distinctly remember using molten armour with a rain coat and wizard hat in the vanity slot. I was pretty young and didn't really understand progression, so even after getting into hardmode and getting a chlorophyte claymore and partisan (it was mobile, I got a drax from shadow chests) I still used the enchanted sword as my main weapon. Even after hours of playing and tens of worlds made, I was only able to get into hardmode on one world. The furthest I ever got was post mechs. Now I have 2k hours and have beaten the moon lord more times than I can count. Oh how times change xD

@@sidr8920 For every success you see there are a thousand failures you don't see. These big companies play it safe by making something they know will make at least a moderate amount of money. It's sustainable, but the end products lack soul. This is one of the reasons Nintendo is still doing fairly well, as they're willing to take a few more risks and have the capital to survive through a bad season.
But yes, I can imagine how much these AAA companies probably seethe over things like Terraria. What's funny is that they could probably fund so many indie projects instead that at least a few would succeed and be big hits.

One of my friends named ben was talking about it at our lunch table and he said that he beat the WOF the day before, I was super curious so he showed me a bit of a youtube video from you, It got me so hooked on the game that its 5-6 years later and I cant stop playing this game, It is an absolute masterpiece and that is saying something given how now many retro style games can pull off a 10/10 rating, but it 100% deserves it and more! Its amazing what could be done with a solid foundation.
Once that basic 2D foundation was made, they could just quickly add everything in and refine it.

On the first day, Redigit created a hardcore character on Master Mode.
On the second day, Redigit beat many bosses.
And on the third day, Redigit got hit by a boulder.

I bought eleven copies myself. One on GOG, not knowing, what is it really. With my wife, we realized, that we can play both on one copy and had a blast. Then we bought steam copy, one each. And then we bought eight copies to get our friends to play with us. No one really did, but well, it was worth it. Love the game.

What's insane is when you look at the list of the best selling games of all time and realize that a good number of them had 3-5 month dev cycles (granted some of the newer short dev cycle games changed a lot over later patches, so it's almost cheating). Though honestly the long (3 to 5 yr average, 10 for longer/delayed games) dev cycles are a fairly recent thing, I remember when the original half-life was in dev for 2 years and we all called it stuck in development hell for that! Some indie games like terraria were just scoped well and were in a releasable state on what would have been a fairly normal dev cycle in the past!. Shows solid vision and good planning.
