My 1980 Gibson is all original except for the occasional fret dressing, and I've put it through heavy gigging over the years. I'd really like to see how one of these chibsons would hold up over a year of three 4 hour band practices a week, two 4 hour gigs on the weekends, and solo practice time to learn new material. I tried a Chinese Epiphone a few years back that didn't last 6 months as a spare guitar on stage. My Gibson is a true workhorse. It's just pure quality.

    • @paulsadoff3661

That's why you buy a Gibson or a Fender. I have a '63 strat I bought in 1981. I don't know how many gigs I have used it for but one year I did over 240 and that guitar was there at most of them. Not sure how the Chibson would hold up -I imagine not nearly as well as the real thing.

I've been hearing rumors that the newer chibsons are higher quality, but I'm not willing to put one to the test. I love my Gibson. It's a 335-S Professional Deluxe in tobacco sunburst. It has an original coil tap that makes the humbuckers sound like single coils. It's amazing. I know some people gigging with newer Gibsons, and they claim that the durability and quality is still there. Gibson better look out if China's stuff starts rivaling American made quality.

@@kjv-public-domain 335-S is an unusual guitar-cool to hear that someone is using one. I did a review of my 335 on youtube-it is a great guitar, about 9 years old and still in great shape-only one fret mill so far. The only reason to get a Chibson is if you can't afford the real thing or you are just bored and want to try out something a bit different. They really don't compare to a USA made Gibson, even the one I have done all the work to. Still, I like it a lot more than the Epiphones I have had.

@@kjv-public-domain the latest (2020+) China-made Epiphones are killer guitars. I own several, including the latest ‘58 Korina V, which features solid Korina wood, no veneers, chunky ‘58 style neck profile, Gibson BurstBuckers, CTS pots, Mallory cap, and Switchcraft output jack and 2-way switch. The quality is literally already HERE with these guitars. By the way, I also own Gibson Les Pauls and an Explorer. I’m also a pro luthier and build custom guitars from premium tone woods. Thanks for the video. A follow up is always a good thing as there were guitars in the past, like Jay Turser I bought that were built solid (forgot where produced), then they changed manufacturing location (I'm sure cost save) and went from like Korea to Thailand or Vietnam or some thing or vice versa. I was recommending to people as mine was solid (still is after 20 years)! They bought them and the new mfg location and neck separating from body and things, so sent them back one after another.
The Chinese guitars are produced pretty well now (wood, look, paint, etc). The issues are WEIGHT (too light), electronics, and tuners/bridge/tailpiece. So a fret leveling and crowing, new nut and cut to proper depth and setup is needed...but you end up spending $400-800 for a guitar that would cost THOUSANDS! Soo, the person buying HAS to be ok and understand that it is to be bought and kept...for life and good with that. BUT if one does...it'll look and sound great and save you a LOT of $$$.

What are the neck profiles like on these Chinese copies? Gibsons are known for having fat (Louisville slugger) necks. In particularly the Les Paul Custom.
I currently play a custom built Warmoth strat with a Ibanez wizard II configuration. That neck fits my hands. So I'm curious what the difference would be. I used to have a a Les Paul Custom copy from the '70s that had a super super slim neck on it that would be comparable to my strat.

Great video, honest and straight to the point. For a while I've been toying with the idea of buying a Chibbie for a Jimmy Page guitar project. I own two Epiphone LPs but I resist the idea of modding those, I like them just the way they are. I'd buy another Epi in a heartbeat but coming across the right burst is tricky, at least I've seen a few JP replicas around. I hear that these Chibsons usually need some fret work to be done, thankfully I've done crowning and dressing so far, but leveling would be a new skill to learn. Swapping electronics? No problem. Like you said, the tricky part is getting the actual guitar they show you in pictures, I guess.

Attention to detail is amazing the current 2022 Gibson made replica cost a ridiculous £50k which is insane. They did do one a few years ago that used still go for over £15k which again is nuts. As for the Gibson name on the headstock and inked 59 serial number on the back of the headstock I have no problem at all with it. It's not as if it could be passed off as the Greeny guitar because we all know who the current owner is. People get on their high horse about the Gibson name on the headstock yet no one says anything about the replica's Slash uses that has Gibson on the headstock or the Ansley Lister ES335 made by college students again with Gibson on the headstock. picked up my 2014 Epi Custom off CL for $270 shipped. Needed some minor cosmetic TLC (oxidation)...but it's a keeper now....98% as good as any Gibson I've owned. Probuckers ain't too shabby...

@@paulsadoff3661 Not really. Picking up an Epiphone is basically the same as a Chibson! It needs new electronics and hardware, nut, cut to depth, fret leveling and crowning and setup!!! Cost even if get the Epi for $270 is the same as Chibson, but it will always say "Epiphone" on it as the Chinese one would say "Gibson"!!
Most people would prefer the later at the same cost point imo!

I didn't have this guitar back then but I would have used it- better to bring something expendable that still plays and sounds good to a place where you might have fists and pool cues flying. If you knew what guitars I brought to these questionable places you would be shocked.
