Have you experienced the dust/weathersealing issue with the sigma? I know that this was supposedly fixed recently, but I wanted to ask you about your experience.

To buy a7r5 with tamron 35-150 and 20mm 1.8, or a7iv with 24-70gm2 and 70-200gm2? I heard sony gm lenses have superior autofocus (xd linear motor) and rarely miss the focus, where 3rd party lenses aren’tthat reliable. What’s your experience with tamron autofocus where you have to be quick to focus and capture the shot and also in low light how it’s responding? Thanks! ❤
I bought back into the sony ecosystem , by purchasing a sony A74 ( after owning an a9) and i was going back and forward between these 2 lenses, the 24-70 ii GM , and the Tamron 35-150mm f 2-2.8 . Very hard choice, but i went the Tamron lens, for the run and gun range and, good god its a great lens! I so wanted the 24-70 ii , but the tamron is a 2 for 1 for me, and very sharp. ( in a perfect world I would have a dehumidifier cabinet full of lenses, but , hey maybe in the next life... would still love to have the 24-70ii, but who would not! Merry xmas all!
I used all three - Tamron is good but it’s “good for the money” and lack of 24mm at the wide end was a real issue, so I moved to Sigma. What a lens! It is well built and delivers great image quality, but it’s big an heavy and after a year’s light use, filled up with dust. So, when Sony mkII came around, even though I think it’s not worth the asking price, I shelled out for it. I still feel guilty about it, but, I’ll live.. If Sigma didn’t have the dust issue, I may have gritted my teeth and lived with the weight, because the image quality is EXTREMELY close to that of MkII.
AFAIK the dust issue was fixed more than a year ago, with improved sealing in hardware by Sigma. I have a less than year old copy and have had zero issues. Of course it’s still possible to get dust in any lens regardless of the sealing, depending on what you are doing, so YMMV.
Sigma offered free repairs for folks who experienced the dust issue due to the barrel gasket. This was a manufacturing issue and there is a way to find out if you are affected by your serial number, I believe on their website.
Great video. This video reminds me of why I sold my A7siii and got the a7iv. You can get a good prime and have a bunch of focal lengths (apsc mode, clear image zoom, and active stabilization). 🤙🏽
I just got mine a little over a week ago and I got it because I would always be curious if I got the cheaper versions and also because I thought it was a great pick for my first GM lens
@@faresnimer5164 Only, they do. There's plenty of competition, Sigma in particular can beat some of the older GM lenses. Hard to take someone seriously with such an absolutist statement. There are many ways to define competition.
@@dunnadidit Nice, you got what I was going for. Fellow geek here! Expanding on my point though for Mr Sith. The latest GM II lenses are objectively in terms of quality and performance the best Sony E mount lenses in their respective categories. The 70-200 and the 24-70. Superb lenses but they are expensive, too expensive for many. Now if anyone reading this is of the school of money is no object, you will buy the best of the best every time. Why are you using Sony and not a medium format Hasselblad or Leica camera? ;-) Hey, all joking aside, if you have the money to buy the Sony GM lenses, good for you. I went Sigma 24-70 F2.8 over the Sony GM mk1 24-70 as at the time before the Mk2, the Sigma was actually a better lens in several regards and much cheaper. Yes the Mk2 is better but it's the law of diminishing returns. 10% and 5% there for substantially more money. If those only really noticeable when pixel peeping levels are that important to you, again good for you. The skill of the photographer will likely be more of a factor in any given situation but better is better. The 70-200 mk2 is again an objectively better lens than my Tamron 70-180. It has sharper images for starters, more zoom range and it's an internal zooming camera so more weather and dust resistant as well as OSS. But here's the thing, I buy equipment for travel photography. My bodies and lenses need to fit in travel shoulder bags. The Sony is 50mm longer and 1/3 heavier. The Sony lens wouldn't fit my current set ups. The Tamron goes great size wise with my Sigma 24-70. So in size and weight terms, Tamron beats Sony. I paid just over £800 for my Sigma lens and £759 for my Tamron lens. UK prices now the Sony lenses are £2599 for the 70-200 GM II and £2099 for the 24-70 GM II. Those price differences make objective comparisons really rather difficult. Because while all the named lenses perform scarily closely to each other objectively. When you factor in the prices they are not fair comparisons. It's such an issue that Sony have gimped artificially the focus and frame rate high speed burst performance on select Sony cameras if they detect they are not running the latest Sony glass. The new Sony glass might have faster and more responsive focus motors but it's a software gimp to make their own lenses stand out for professional buyers. It's a shady move. Me, I'm more than happy to spend the money I saved on trips to take photos of new places and experience life. I'm still spending vastly more money on camera bodies and lenses as well as buying extremely nice kit by any estimates. I refuse to play the price/model shaming game though.
Thanks a bunch for an excellent review video and the music choice is also outstanding. The huge issue, it was for me, but cutting out a few coffee, latte, capucino is not. So I agree with you, get the best and forget the rest... LOL
Another option is buy the Version 1, or in my case just keep it. It has PLUMMETED in value after release of the Ver 2. Yeah, it's heavier and bigger but the image quality is great and all the reviewers fawned over it when it was first released. (But I don't really do video). You can snag a minty used one for under $1000. I suppose a working pro can pay for the Version II pretty quickly but for us hobbyists no so much.
How does the stabilization differ when it comes to those lenses ? In canon environment, RF glass adds additional stabilization stops, which is a gamechanger. how does it work in Sony’s world ?
I’m big on quality over quantity so for me I’d rather buy the absolute best option. Even if that would mean waiting to get to the better lens over the cheaper one. If your investing in any craft If possible I would always say get the best of everything. This way you don’t end up replacing lenses because the glass isn’t good enough. Then you end up spending more money anyway. That’s just my opinion though.
i would never put my customer through substandard footage or photos just because i cheaped out on a lens. the type of customers that I deal with can easily tell image quality differences and i simply want to give them the best.
This is definitely the best answer regarding the problem. I got the GM2 because the customer service guy recommended me this lens since it’s technically the best in the 2470mm lineup. (I did some research myself before purchasing)
I tried a used sigma 24-70 from amazon and omg so much dust would get into the sensor i would have to keep cleaning it with blower tool thingy . My other lens dont have this issue. Does it happen to anyone else with that lens ?
Random observation: assuming one has the budget for a kit from Sony, Canon or Panasonic, there is no excuse for poor image quality in small productions these days. What sets a production ahead now is all the rest of it, like story, editing, sound, shot choice/composition etc. But companies like Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Blackmagic have leveled the image quality playing field with bigger productions. We live in exciting times.
Ngl that 28-75 looks kinda sweet when compared to 2300. You can literally buy two of those and something like 35mm 1.8 The first 24-79 gm felt overpriced this one is kinda same. I wish sigma release new midrange zoom with better weather sealing
Another great video, Dunna! I would LOVE to see a comparison between this new GMii and its rival Sigma and Tamron equivalents. If the Sigma dust issue has been resolved, I'm leaning in that direction due to the bang for the buck. But because GMii is a native Sony lens, are there Sony body/lens integration benefits that the 3rd party lenses are lacking?
YEA PLEASE make a video comparing the sigma and the Sony in just about buying one! Everybody just says Sony it’s better because of the locks and the wheels but I don’t care about that is the image quality better? Is it really worth it to buy and spend money on the Sony or would I be doing it just for the added accessories staff.. thank you great video!
Its very heavy for midrange zoom with ability to zoom a bit more. I kinda would like 50-200 to exist i dom't really need 35-50, my 16-35 fills my wide need
The best part about stuff like this is you can always get better. And having certain gear has nothing to do with how good or bad you are at something. Just keep having fun with it and learning more and more and get the gear that makes the most sense for you! Thanks for the kind words!
@@alchemist_x79 ha! I’m 50 now and acutely aware of my limitations! I enjoy the sigma, but I’m well aware of my own creative and skill shortfalls. I’d rather give the extra £1000 to charity than waste it on a lens I’ll only ever get 1% of the benefits from! 😂
I tried it out for a few weeks, but returned it yesterday. It's a nice lens, but honestly, for the type of work I do, was total overkill at that price point. Instead, I picked up the 24-105/f4 and 35GM/f1.4 and so far, am absolutely thrilled with my decision. The 24-105 is MUCH better for handheld video since it has OSS. And I've had my eye on the 35 for quite some time. While I can afford the new 24-70 without issue, I still returned it because I did not think it represented a good value. Great review as always!!
Agree 100% - I have the same combo. I can easily crop with this combo and cover also 105mm. Much cheaper, lighter and smaller than the new Canon 20-105 2.8 which is optically not on par. The only thing which I would really appreciate in a 24-70 would be internal focus due to weather and dust resistance.
I really, really wanted to get this lens, but I just don't need it. I already have the 16-35 GM II, the 24 1.4 GM, and the 50 1.2 GM. I had to keep telling myself 'my want' was not 'a need'. That said, I'm sure that those that both want and need this lens will absolutely be happy with it.
The big problem is that it isn't parafocal. When you zoom in and focus manually, and zoom out, it loses a bit of the focus. This is infuriating!!!! I wish I hadn't bought it.
@@dunnadidit I would say right now 16-35mm f4 G lens…..I will look to get a Sony when the version II 16-35mm GM comes out. Till then the 17-28mm works for me
@@martin_wood yeah, I felt it was too heavy as well but on gimbal the range is really great, and you can punch in with apsc mode. I got the 16-35gm, its great but for photos definitely missing that 45-70mm range. I wonder when will the 16-35gm version 2 come out.
hahah...I wondered if it would be something other than the price ;-) I bought the Sigma 28-70mm last year. Love the light weight, but really miss the extra mm on the wide end. Also, fun to see you hiking around the PNW!
When I started to get photo gear I choose the cheap way. Ok, I'm not a pro so I don't need pro. But... with time you can see flaws. Green fringing, onion bokeh balls etc. So you sell cheap and buy mediums. And story begin all over again. Again switching for better. This is the worst way, because you loose transaction fees or price drop from to used. My advice: if you know that willing so much - don't buy the compromise, wait and make money and buy what you really want (or get on credit :D )
I agree with a lot of this. My approach is generally to attempt, if possible, to find the best value gear that will accomplish more than what I need it to. But that in itself takes a lot of time and effort to distinguish. And it’s always in the back of my mind… “what if I just can’t see the issues yet?” Haha. It’s quite the conundrum
@@dunnadidit ie. I had Samyang 35 1.8 for almost two years and was great. Until I made one almost perfect photo. Focus great, framing great, objects perfect smile and looks, but those colours in background. Ehh. Now I have Sony 35 1.8 for night time street photography. It's great!
Love the 35 f1.8… all the indoor shots in this video were filmed on it. I really think that is a great value lens too considering there is a 35 GM that is probably technically better but the cost hasn’t made me dive into it yet.
I probably should haha. I didn’t for the last ones, just kind of released them and didn’t tell anyone 🤦🏻♂️ maybe this time I’ll actually get it right.
I'm an "Only the best of the best will do kind of guy... alright that out of the way no I'm definitely not that guy. I only say that because my last lens/camera purchase was the Sony Alpha 1 and the 70-200 GM OSS II... Both were out of the product of coincidental needs as in they both happened to exist at the time I was shopping for both a camera that could pair with my a7SIII and a 70-200 lens that could accommodate my professional needs . That being said, I already own the Sigma 24-70 and love it immensely and if I were to buy another 24-70 I'd have zero issues with purchasing a second Sigma. They really are that good, and if the weight difference is too much for anyone then you really need to put the camera away and pick up some weights!
It's October and Adobe still has not provided a lens profile that corrects for Raw distortion in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw. That is a Big Deal! For a Sony holy trinity lens to be without Adobe support for 6 months after introduction is unbelievable and makes the 24-70 GM II a questionable buy for now.
I've had the first gen tamron and decided to upgrade, I would love to get the sony, but opted for the tamron g2 as it has improved an already capable lens I've been using for 3 years... The sigma is not an option because of the added weight, i will be painfull to work with after shoting an event or studio sessions. Also for the price of the Sony I can get the tamron and and then the sony g 20mm 1.8 to get a wider perspective and better aperture, still saving about 300 to 400 depending on the deal... I've decided for the tamron mainly due to the sony price and all this recession and war situation, maybe in 3 years I will pull the trigger for the sony, for now I think I'll be more than pleased with the newer g2...
I sold everything for one lens ! The Sony 24-105 f4 ! and after 6 months, no regrets. my best gear idea for a long time. It’s an amazing master piece 😉
@@bbasleigh6149 I have the old sony 24-70 GM and just bought the 24-105mm sony. I tested two copies of the 24-105mm...they were remarkably similar. My comparisons using MTF mapper to really zero in on the resolution shows the older model GM is better. Noticeably better. I expect the GM II is better yet. Think about it. GM vs G. and the GM covers a shorter range. Asking a lot for the G lens to exceed the GM...and it does not.
Great video, D! I LOVE the GMII. I did a side by side for about 3 days and have to say, it did not win me over. It may have just been me or I was sent a 'Friday afternoon' GMII, but to me, it felt 'cheaper' than the Sigma 24-70 and the OG GM. For example, the focus ring did not have the same quality feel as the OG GM and for the price, I could not sleep at night. Was I getting extra bangs for buck over the Sigma? On that basis, the decision for me at my level was the Sigma all day long and I’m SUPER happy with it. I think I will be for a looong time.
Interesting! I don’t get a “cheaper” feel from this when compared to the sigma at all… though I can see how the extra weight of the sigma or GMi could seem like a more premium feel. There is some reason that we equate heft to quality. But I wonder why we would have gotten different feeling!? Thanks for sharing dude!

Ideally I don't want a heavy setup. looking forward for your views and suggestions. And if you could help with a combo of your choice. Thanks
The Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 is an awesome lens but to heavy for travel, in my opinion. For lighter weight travel I use Tamron 17-28 f2.8 plus Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. The 28-200 offers excellent image quality, especially considering its 7x zoom range. I also own a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 gen1 but find I use the 28-200 more often. The Sony 24-105 f4 OSS is another option to consider.
One of the benefits of the A1 is that sweet burst speed. I think a lot of people with the A1, or even the A9 or A9ii, need lenses that can get maximum burst speeds. And so non-Sony lenses can become non-starters. Too many reviewers treat these lens comparisons like everyone is a landscape or portrait photographer - and the frames per second consideration goes unaddressed.

What’s your experience with tamron autofocus where you have to be quick to focus and capture the shot and also in low light how it’s responding? Thanks! ❤
Broooooo, the bird at the end was syncing with the music! ❤️ what a masterpiece.
Thank you!!
Without oss, not sure I can quite justify the "upgrade" from my sigma 24-70 2.8. Or am I wrong?
This sounds VERY familiar
AFAIK the dust issue was fixed more than a year ago, with improved sealing in hardware by Sigma. I have a less than year old copy and have had zero issues. Of course it’s still possible to get dust in any lens regardless of the sealing, depending on what you are doing, so YMMV.
I have no dust in my Sigma but it’s only 6 months old. The GM would probably also get some dust anyway given the design.
Sigma offered free repairs for folks who experienced the dust issue due to the barrel gasket. This was a manufacturing issue and there is a way to find out if you are affected by your serial number, I believe on their website.
@@herrkelm thank you, yes, I had Sigma service the lens before I sold it.
I feel this a lot.
And how you find this lenses
The big problem, the price as far as I am concerned (before watching the video). Sigma 24-70 F2.8 all the way.
Haha spoilers!
No lenses compete with the Sony g master lenses
@@faresnimer5164 Only, they do. There's plenty of competition, Sigma in particular can beat some of the older GM lenses. Hard to take someone seriously with such an absolutist statement. There are many ways to define competition.
Only a Sith deals in absolutes.
Why are you using Sony and not a medium format Hasselblad or Leica camera? ;-)
Hey, all joking aside, if you have the money to buy the Sony GM lenses, good for you.
Yes, please make a comparison video of the Sigma 24-70 and Sony 24-70m gii.
+1 for Sony vs sigma!
Heck yeah! Great addition!
I’m sucker for quality. gm II here we go!
What size is the Shimoda bag you're rocking?
35L
I am new on the Sony camera world. Can you mention the video settings you were using on your Sony Camera?
Buy once, cry once. If you want something and can afford it then get it. Live your life.
That's not a 'Huge issue' or a 'ONE GIGANTIC PROBLEM' its just a 'choice issue'. Kudos for the dramatic title though, caps and all.
I tried a used sigma 24-70 from amazon and omg so much dust would get into the sensor i would have to keep cleaning it with blower tool thingy . My other lens dont have this issue. Does it happen to anyone else with that lens ?
Absolutely gorgeous scenery and footage.
Thanks!!
Thanks for your videos I love the time and effort you put in. I would love that sigma, 24-70 is such a useful range.
Thanks for watching!!
What vnd did you use? Keen to know.
Ngl that 28-75 looks kinda sweet when compared to 2300. You can literally buy two of those and something like 35mm 1.8
The first 24-79 gm felt overpriced this one is kinda same. I wish sigma release new midrange zoom with better weather sealing
Yeah I could definitely go for a sigma 24-70 ii
In my opinion you should always buy the best product your money can buy, otherwise you’ll end up buying again. “Buy nice or spend twice”
Great review and good variations in shots :) Keep up!
Great review! I agree, the price being double isn't worth the difference.
Well there ya go!
I already had sigma 24-70 with sony 20mm no regret at all no need for gm for my need
Awesome review. What tripod do you use on travel vlog?
I think if I'm going to spend close to 2k or more, I'd probably get the Tamron 35-150 2-2.8.
Its very heavy for midrange zoom with ability to zoom a bit more. I kinda would like 50-200 to exist i dom't really need 35-50, my 16-35 fills my wide need
I doubt I will ever be good enough to warrant this over the sigma! I’m not even good enough for the sigma! Great video mate,
The best part about stuff like this is you can always get better. And having certain gear has nothing to do with how good or bad you are at something. Just keep having fun with it and learning more and more and get the gear that makes the most sense for you! Thanks for the kind words!
Don’t think that way! Just keep shooting and practicing and you’ll get there.
The problem: The price
I'd absolutely love to see a comparison with the SIgma! Great vid and great channel!
Good video bro , I decided that the extra 1k isnt worth it.
I’m usually shooting on mostly primes but have been loving this lens. Definitely the sharpest 24-70 zoom out there. Becoming one of my fave lenses!
Nice!
I run with the exact same setup you decided on!
Good take.
For my Sony A7R5, the GMii is a must! It is optimized for 61 megapixel sensor while the other great third party options are not.
Bought the lens a few months ago. Just realized that I have tiny specs of dust inside the lens. Does someone else have the same issue?
I really, really wanted to get this lens, but I just don't need it. I already have the 16-35 GM II, the 24 1.4 GM, and the 50 1.2 GM. I had to keep telling myself 'my want' was not 'a need'. That said, I'm sure that those that both want and need this lens will absolutely be happy with it.
The big problem is that it isn't parafocal. When you zoom in and focus manually, and zoom out, it loses a bit of the focus. This is infuriating!!!! I wish I hadn't bought it.
Great overview!!! I do not need the best of the best…..I would rather have a 16-35mm than 24-70mm. That me personally.
So now the question is… which 16-35?
@@dunnadidit I would say right now 16-35mm f4 G lens…..I will look to get a Sony when the version II 16-35mm GM comes out. Till then the 17-28mm works for me
Good review, but why don't you mention the smayang 24-70 F2.8 lens? It is also is very good and the price is good.
Phew! I already bought it and love it for the size/weight savings for gimbals mostly. You got me! Haha
Must be amazing, I had the 24-70 gm first version, still regret selling it.
@@X99Zero I have the sigma, still have to sell it. Love how the footage looks but it’s hefty like the gm1
Hahaha 🤣 if the money is already gone, it’s not a problem I guess
@@dunnadidit in the middle there is Sigma 1.4 35mm DG DN Art :D but is bigger heavier and little worse... bit significantly cheaper!
Haha 😂 now we’re back talking about bang for buck again.
I got one open box for $1700 USD and it’s absolutely worth it at that price lol
Wow! I have to ask was this shot in slog? The colour is stunning!
Yup, all shot SLOG3 and graded using some new luts I have coming soon
@@dunnadidit Definitely interested in the new luts. Will you do a video for the release?
I probably should haha. I didn’t for the last ones, just kind of released them and didn’t tell anyone 🤦🏻♂️ maybe this time I’ll actually get it right.
@@dunnadidit I will definitely be looking out for them!
It is so funny that the a74 and the fx6 are the cameras with focus breathing.
Oh yeah I forgot the fx6 too… and they put out an fx3 firmware update today too but no focus breathing comp from what I can see
Would love to see a comparison video between the Sony and Sigma, like you mentioned!
+1 for the sigma vs sony!
Good infomercial, thanks.
Really want to see a side-by-side bokeh comparison between this Sony and the Sigma!
I want a comparison between the sigma and the sony

Nice James!
Great, thanks
9:08 that is really smoth. i like it
Let me guess; it's got to do with something about making my money disappear!

great lens, better than the 24-70 in my opinion
I wish there would be GM 24-105 f/2 or 2.8 since I often film at very low light. Price and weight do not matter.
@@kenh.5903 better than 24-70 I or II?
@@bbasleigh6149 I have the old sony 24-70 GM and just bought the 24-105mm sony. I tested two copies of the 24-105mm...they were remarkably similar. My comparisons using MTF mapper to really zero in on the resolution shows the older model GM is better. Noticeably better. I expect the GM II is better yet. Think about it. GM vs G. and the GM covers a shorter range. Asking a lot for the G lens to exceed the GM...and it does not.
Do you guys think sigma will update their 24-70?
The price? Canon R mount users are like “awe that ain’t no thang” lol

@@dunnadidit It is curious, right? Like I say, it may have been me, the GMII I had didn't feel like it was worth the extra heft in coin. Will the GMII now be your lens of choice vs the Sigma?
My wallet is a bit too light right now but I get the feeling that I’ll give in eventually haha
@@dunnadidit I hear you, D!! 😂😂
So, the biggest problem with this lens is that my couch isn't comfortable enough for me to buy it.
Haha I like the way you put this.
I have this lens. If you have a corporate budget, buy it. Otherwise you’ll be just as well served with a Sigma.
I can't change my aperture on mine!!! I need to fly to Mexico City and get it fixed.
The solution is straight forward: If you don't have the money, get something else.
Hi Dunna,
What combinations would u recommend?
Combo 1
Sigma 16-28 f2.8
Sigma 24-70 f.28
Sigma prime 35mm f.1.4
Combo 2
Tamron 17-28 f2.8
Tamron 28-75 f2.8
Sigma prime 35 f1.4 or sigma prime 85 f1.4
Combo 3
Sigma 35mm prime f1.4
Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8
Sony 20mm prime f1.8
I mainly want to build a lens collection for my A74 for travel, family, landscape, casual photography. Ideally I don't want a heavy setup.
looking forward for your views and suggestions. And if you could help with a combo of your choice.
Thanks
I’d go combo 1 personally
The Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 is an awesome lens but to heavy for travel, in my opinion. For lighter weight travel I use Tamron 17-28 f2.8 plus Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD. The 28-200 offers excellent image quality, especially considering its 7x zoom range. I also own a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 gen1 but find I use the 28-200 more often. The Sony 24-105 f4 OSS is another option to consider.
The best of the best. Yes you have to get what you paid for.
I have 2 Sony A1s, one with the 16-35 f4 and another with the Tamron 35-150 2-2.8. Covers everything I need.
Noice!
I want solid performance at a great value. Sigma all the way.
Bam!
"It comes with a big problem" You mean besides the price? [after seeing the end of the video: it's the price]
Haha you nailed it
For me Tamron G2 wins in every category for amature/semi-pro and even pro that do photo/video work for a living.
I wouldn’t say it wins in every category. More like it only wins in size weight and price, but the win in price is huge.
It is a solid option!!
Yeah.. Nice video, but a bit clickbaity title..
