the wink at the finale, by playing with a small flame, is brilliant

It’s like they combined Pippin with Godspell’s style. I really dig it.

I like this interpretation of my favorite number from PIPPIN. I especially like the staging, dancing and Leading Player's performance.

I saw the original Pippin on Broadway in 1972 and was in a little theater production 13 years later. One of my favorites

WOW! AMAZING! On my side of the pond, I was involved with a production of PIPPIN. We had gone through auditions, casting, rehearsals, set building, costumes and even tech week. AND THEN...AND THEN...AND GENTLEMEN AND THEN....48 hours before opening curtain...COVID shut us and the world down. Not even MAGIC could help us then.

I love a) the greater adherence to the original production, eliminating the circus motif of last decade's revival (a motif that I loved in its own right); b) the sun on the floor of the stage; and c) most of all, the fact that the play starts with Pippin and the players sing *to him,* pointing to the climactic revelation that the troupe is part of his imagination. I hope this production ditched the Theo ending, which isn't bad but is superfluous given the finale's revelation.

They are referred to as the “demons “ so they might not be part of his imagination

@@j.r.cilliangreen4083, not in the original Pippin script, which my high-school theater group used in 1983. I probably still have that script somewhere.

I know those were additions but they are what made me fall in love with Pippin. The original was okay, Ben Vereen was Amazing, but much of the rest and especially the end fell flat for me. It will be interesting to see this version. I hope it meets somewhere in the middle.

    "We can't get Hair."
    "How about Godspell?"
    "Nope."
    "What can we get?"
    "Pippin's available."
"Well. we have all this 70s looking stuff. Might as well."

the lead showed that someone could sing this and not have you think of Ben Vereen, qmqzing, he has magic to do.

Whatever one thinks of the concept, and I do like seeing them not do watered down Fosse, a note to the director of the video itself - one word: GEOGRAPHY! If we don't know the geography, none of his makes sense.

with all due repsect to the urrnet broadway cats, THISD is the obly pippin that comes close to the rpoginal, because it understodd that while schwartz wrote the music, FOPSSE defined the mood, NOT cioque du sol;iel

  • @FidesAla

Making the troupe leader shippy with Pippin does not work at all unless they give the ending a complete 180, because the whole ending is that the performers are more-or-less evil and leading him to destruction, and that a "normal" life without making waves should be satisfying for anyone... I was so disappointed in that when I saw it on Broadway.
But I'm glad the productions here in Japan are doing what Broadway did. I only know Crystal Kay from the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist, but... (Speaking of which, FMA deserves a good stage play and it hasn't gotten one yet...)

I like this better than the overdone circus hooha, but the ensemble being small and all young athletic types is missing the diversity I'd expect to see with a roving bunch of players. It kind of looks like a high school for the performing arts production.

I love how the dancers define the stage..That is what Fosse did, and the better pippins do, though boradway...well, they get too ciorque du solil about it

This needs a little Cirque... I wonder why they threw in those acrobatic moves in at the very end? just to show how unCirque they are? Mission: accomplished!

Pretty awful. Nothing can compare to the Broadway show. In my opinion the emcee was a flop of a cast.
