  • Looking back at one of my favourite retro video games from when I was a kid to see how it holds up today. Felix the Cat is a side-scrolling platformer released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992.

Good review! This was definitely one of the earliest games I remember renting as a child. I haven’t played it in decades, but it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch. In fact, it’s hitting the eShop very soon.

Felix is one of the first games I knew, reading a magazine in the 90s. After years I could play,
it was as good as what I read in the magazine.
If I'm not wrong, some powers like tank fire can increase range if you hold the button
The affection I have for Felix is similar to the affection I have for MarioBros3 on the NES,
It is also the same affection I have for Castle of Illusion (and expanded sequence, Land of Illusion) in MasterSystem
It's games like that that inspire me. I'm an indie game developer
    . Success, Pam!!!

This is a very interesting concept for a game review series, I like it! I've always been a fan of retro games myself. I've heard of Felix The Cat but I've never played the game, but after seeing your review, I just may add this to my collection sometime, if it's not too pricey, but if it's rare, I may have to pass, haha. Keep making reviews though, you're good!

Wow. I have a vivid memory of renting this game from an Albertsons grocery store in Florida (They rented games and movies back then in a small section at the front of the store) after my dad picked me up from a bad Karate class as an 8-year-old (Around 1992, I'm 36 now, will be 37 in a few days. *cries*).
Then he got me a TCBY yogurt and I went home and played this till bedtime. Remember really enjoying it then and wanting to buy the game, but never did for some reason and had forgotten about it till now. Thank you for the nostalgic memories this brought up for me.

A friend gave me this game for a few months and i had a blast playing it. After playing it for quite a while i really wanted the cartridge for myself but i couldn't find it at any store.
Ended up trading about 3 games for it in the end hehe. It really remains one of my favorite games from those times.
Colorful and good graphics, great music, not a single stage looks the same and you never get bored.

I saw an episode of Felix the cat on amazon prime a few years ago. It was the weirdest cartoon I've ever seen. He went out drinking, got fucked up, started hallucinating, then decided to drive home. its so weird you should check it out. The episode is called Woos Whoopee

You mention being bad at Mario 3 after 10 years. I had a similar experience, and realized it had to do with the lag of playing on an emulator on an LCD TV. When I played again on OG hardware on a CRT, it went so much better. Wonder if that also contributed to your experience too.

Space level can be beaten easily if you have 2 spare lives - just tap the A button so Felix fly up high beyond the borders of screen. There are no enemies there. Eventually you run out of hearts, but by that time you cross the checkpoint. So, grab NES Adventage controller, drop something on turbo A and make yourself a tea)

This game is excellent throughout. Hudson must have thought, why fight the SNES with the PC Engine only (Hello big failure Super Bomberman!) when we can fight with the NES too? This beats Super Mario World. Better story (rescueing a kitten instead of a spoiled girl in pink), better worlds, better upgrades and rides, very smooth gameplay, not too hard but a decent challenge to finish it and a constant smile. Best platform game on the NES.

Great review. I recall there were four NES games based on 30+ year-old cartoons that came out in 1992: this, Wacky Races, The Jetsons: Cogswell's Caper!, and The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends. While those first three are rather expensive, I still think they're trying out, even if only on emulators.
Though as for The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends (which can be bought for about $10) I think that's quite possibly the worst NES game of all time, even worse than other NES games such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Dragon's Lair.

I got it on a nes reproduction cart so i could play it on my NES.. it was worth getting and i'm not normally a fan of JRPGs either.. the Japanese to English translations are very well done. I think it one of the more popular reproduction carts so its pretty common to find on sites that sell that sorta stuff.

The PPU (Picture Processing Unit) is basically the chip on the NES that generates the composite video signal. This chip has an ability to use emphasis bits which as I said can to dim the screen or make grayscale effects and such. For example: you probably know that bad conversion of Dragon's Lair on the NES, which also used this technique to darken the screen.
