Brought tears to my eye. I'm from Kentucky and just moved to Chicago. I miss my family and friends down in KY. But don't you worry, I'll be back someday you beautiful lady.
I’m starting to realize that this dude made almost every old song we heard growing up. Camptown Racers, beautiful dreamer and now this?!? Why haven’t we heard his name way more!!!!!
I moved to KY from MD about 5 years ago and have been a musician all my life. When I actually got to play this song in Kentucky and with true Kentucky people it almost made me cry. Actually it did afterwards, but nobody saw. It's not a state of the union. It's more of a feeling you get. God bless America and God bless Kentucky.
I am from Mizoram, India. I was 12 years old when Miss Gwen Reese Roberts taught us this song. I am over 80 now and i still cherish and remember the times we sung this song. I can never forget it and i still enjoy listening and singing this song. So nostalgic! Poor Old Joe, Strawberry Fair are also songs close to my heart. God Bless You All❤
I just recalled we used to sing this song at School but it has been such a long time since then I had forgotten it. But when I heard the lyrics "weep no more my lady..." I remembered.
We sang it in school in the Caribbean too. We also sang, " The florets all are sleeping, Beneath the moon's bright ray They nod their heads together And dream the night away etc, etc
I've heard this song for the first time, sung by my friend, when I was at the first grade in SMA1 Solo Indonesia. Now 60 years later my tears are falling down every time I sing it.
I’m not from Kentucky, or even America, but the sentiment translates, beautiful song. My daughter and I listened to this song for her homeschool music study, this is her favourite of three different styles that we listened to. It’s my favourite too. Very well done!
i never understood this song until now. We moved to Michigan, spent 6 months homeless. I miss my family, and my friends. I also grew up in bardstown, if you know, its where they have the Stephen Foster play.
We used to sing this in class and many American classic folk songs as "I've been working on the railroad", Home on the Range and oh, Susanna. But that was the California of back in 1990's, now they hardly teach these songs to young kids
Good singing and by the way this is my first time I was able to finally get to see the words on a phone for Saturday's and Sundays thank God I don't have to be singing this every day at school. And all of you who are not a good Christan I don't care if you don't like what I just said and if you have a problem with it you can get yourself over it and is coming all from a 9 year old daughter.
I remember singing this song in my old elementary school here in Central Kentucky. I plan on living here in Kentucky for the rest of my life. I was born and raised here
I’m a Kentucky man born there still live there and y’all need to look up pictures of rolling Kentucky hills in spring when the sun hits that blue grass and the colors pop on that grass it’s a beautiful sight. Every state has its beauty and what I just described is our treasure. Happy Derby day, don’t plant them tomatoes until the day after derby. Kentuckians know what I’m talking about. I love y’all and God bless our torn country, let’s be together as Americans again I have hope.
My Uncle Duckie who was killed over Tanzania during the IInd World War sang this song all day. Also in the aircraft in which he lost his life. His brothers, sisters, mother and father have all passed, but to his day I sea his face, in photos, and because he and my Mom were so very close, I think of them together now, singing this beautiful song by Stephen Foster.
@@CharlesSzaboPhD actually the first school in Baliuag was founded by a teacher from Kentucky, and at that same school filipinos learned the song, My Old Kentucky, at the time it was the soul school in the whole region, so children learned the song rapidly and became their favorite.

Many people on forums i've read have different views on weather or not Kentucky is a Southern state, a Midwestern state, or both. The fact that Kentucky was part of Virginia should be enough to consider it Southern in my opinion.
My mother Irene was a very good musician in her time, as was my Father Percy and my late brothers, Eric and Harry. Mum had a singing voice very similar sounding to Shirley Boone. Maybe not your style of music, but i would love to hear you compose a rendition of Irene Goodnight. Mum was 88 when she passed away and we played it at her funeral. I only wish she was still here to hear your compositions.
So nice to hear these good ol' songs again... ones based more on traditional moral and values instead of today's garbage that's 90% of the time based on promoting sex, partners cheating on each other, drinking and other drugs, crime and violence, etc etc
Might be interesting to look up what the original lyrics were--you know, the ones that Foster himself wrote when he composed the song in 1853? They're rather different from the revised lyrics most people today are familiar with.

So many of Foster's Songs are elegiac - Songs of Loss and Death. They are really universal Experiences.
