What happens when the electric goes out? Do you have a backup generator? A few hours without oxygenation with all those fish sucking up the air in the water will leave most of them floating on the top.

What an awesome setup! I'd love to be raising tilapia but I can only have my fish outdoors so I'm pretty sure they would die in the Canadian winters. Until I can, I'm gonna watch yours instead ...
Ever think about trying aquaponics and growing some vegetable with all those fish?
    Thanks for the look!

thanks for sharing this - i'm planning on doing an aquaponics set up for a private fish / vegetable subsistence framing project. maybe, if successful, potentially supplying a few local family owned restaurants. but this is not a "business" plan, I already have a job. this is a prepper project and specifically - education for me and mine. i have already spent more than 10 yrs keeping ornamental fish alive and i'm an established gardener. it seems, all gardeners / all aquarists are perennial students. as i watch, i'm trying to decide between old Craig's list fish tanks, or inexpensive above ground swimming pools, or commercial aquaponics reservoirs or, for that matter, salvage bathroom tubs from habitat for humanity. there are a lot of cost considerations vs yield expectations on the fish bone model of the decision tree :-) anyway, i'm still scratching my head... thank you so much for the info

what makes me wonder - you just have way too much fish to grow in 5 - 6 tanks, even if they all get 1 pound each - they wont be able to move.. whats the plan ? are you going to keep it as is or thin the herd?

By using Professor John Todd's solar pond system which is a self-feeding system one can achieve a fish to water density ratio of 1 fully grown fish per 4 liters or 1 gallon. 1 liter is 1 cubic decentimeter or a cube which is 4 inches on a side or 10 centimeters on a side. Check out the work of Professor John Todd or just call him and inquired about his self-feeding solar ponds.

Ella Hi, Americans are so removed from thier food source that I doubt in a crisis they could survive. For instance; there is only a 3 or 4 day food supply in any city in America, what would happen if there was a earthquake? financial problem or, God forbid, war? its a good idea to learn how to grow a few tomatoes, fish, something.

Gene Loren so if you put a 10 inch oscar of other fish in a ten gallon tank do you thinks that's okay? No! You shouldn't even put 55 one inch fish in a 55 gal. Aquaponics and fish farming is different so seriously update your facts. If you think I'm in correct I'm very expirienced with large fish having many oscars and predatory fish like 3 foot long peacock bass
