WOW I need this job I want this job so bad I love fish especially learning and breeding them it's a hobby . On the other hand I started to learn how grow hydroponic foods indoors but adding fish to help plants grow ! This video blew my mind awesome work and genius work . I wish they had something like that in Houston where I live ... hopefully maybe one day I can open a business like these . This video truly inspired me

Solar heating systems from Thermomax or now Kingspan in Ireland, I used to make them in a factory very good for hot water, the evacuated solar tubes capture heat from the sun, the glass tubes need to be put on the roof. Good luck very interesting video.

Santa Fe community college has an amazing video on youtube with tons of information. I think it's really cool that you guys are able to start this business in a city that really needs this. I do worry that if you focus too much on one species you open yourself up for being hit to the curb if and when a disease breaks out.

hey there I am new to AP as well and have a complete set up going.
There really is no wrong way to do AP.
The biggest is take your time - you need to let it cycle for 6 to 8
weeks to get the bio filter established.
I started off this past January with ammonia and a bucket of sandy
    sludge from a local creek.
Once it cycled I used a 6PPM sea salt to kill any parasites and also had
fish in it at that time - the 6 ppm will go away over time - do not
keep salt there constantly limit to 4 to 6 weeks as it will kill the
fish over time it over works the kidneys.
Aeration is your biggest ally my setup has a 200 gallon sump as my
breeder for the rosy reds and fat head minnows to feed my bass and
crappie - crappie are finicky and not a good fit but I like them so I
have 10 in my float beds 15 bass and 12 blue gills. The ratio is one 200
gallon sump to one 250 gallon float bed constant flow run off, to a 300
gallon grow bed with media. bass and blue gill are pellet trained.
The plant growth is no joke in just a week and a half after planting I have full blooms and tomatoes.
The bigger concern in food production is bees.
The secret I believe is using high protein feed to predatory fish like blue gill and bass.
the greens are going really well. Expecting to expand out to produce 5 acres of produce off of a
city plot size location using solar panels and water turbines off of gravity fed auto siphon . Tilapia is a trash fish like carp low quality food for humans.

Composting indoors will add a sign amount of heat to the operation. Using waste food from your customers to feed Black Soldier Flying larvae will not only keep the waste out of a landfill, but also generate large amounts of both heat and self harvesting larvae to feed the fish. Duckweed should also be grown to feed tilapia. Breeding BSF is the hardest part of producing larvae on a year round basis.

Wow, Great, informative presentation. I would definitely add solar vacuum tube water heaters. They are fairly inexpensive and would pay for themselves quickly. Another possible thought is using roof solar tubes. This should not only let in ambient light, but also provide sunlight during the daytime. It looks like a flat roof which is perfect for that kind of solar tube. It's also something you could add little by little to spread out costs. That will help keep your energy costs down.
Great job and good luck on this great business adventure.
(Also, make sure Anthony gets out of that place to sell.
He speaks VERY well and could sell just about anything)

Back in 8th grade, I did an aquaponics project for a science fair, and that sparked my love for aquaculture. I've owned tilapia for 2 years now, and they're not just average food fish, yanno? They have personality (similar to flowerhorns and other large cichlids, like oscars) and they're such cool fish. They're gorgeous and are so neat. I have 7 tilapia right now, but I'm planning on doing a tub system this spring when it warms up so I don't have to purchase a *ton* of heaters. I've never eaten my tilapia (I'm too attached to them to eat any lol) but when they get too big, I bring them back to the fishery I got them from in exchange for more tilapia fingerlings.

To save money on electricity, if feasible, you should consider a wood gasification furnace for heated circulating water. The kind that is typically used in radiant heating in homes. You can also include thermal water storage tanks to store all the energy from the wood and use the hot water as your needs change throughout the day. This of course assumes that it would be easy to find wood to burn.

I was thinking of doing something similar and it is nice to see that it works before jumping on the investment. I will not be using tilapia though. I need to find a cold water fish. SO I am actually leaning towards Cat Fish.

This is super awesome! Is there a specific reason you are using glass tanks vs using 275 gallon ibc totes. Totes are super cheap and food grade ones make a fantastic holding tank. It’s a happy medium between tanks and commercial grade holding tanks. Tanks that size can be heated with a hot water heater element. 1500w heating element is $10 at a hardware store. The solar heating idea is pretty awesome though.

Them fish in the last tank, are under so much stress!! Using RO water removes things that you don't get from the fish, and you need to replace it, and have the natural things in the water.

    • @paulmcdonald7535
      @paulmcdonald7535 9 лет назад +3

RO water is for replacing the water lost from the system due to evaporation and transpiration. This is a very low percentage of overall water volume. You should understand that nutrients, ions and molecules, do not evaporate out of the system. When fish food is put in, the only place for that to go is into some animal or plant to make them grow. This is why topping off with RO water is necessary; the ion balance will be thrown off in the short term otherwise. And in the long term, the water may become too salty for things to live. For me, our tap water is not too high in ions, but I don't know if it has magnesium or calcium or someother-ium. I know it is contaminated with perchlorates, which I hope the RO filter takes out. Then I can add small amounts of certain minerals depending on my measured ion concentration and plant needs, and only if necessary.
Also, some fish like to "school", which means that they want to be really close to their buddies. And therefore, having high stocking densities in not bad for these fish at all. Please be reminded that the water is constantly being aerated, filtered, and recycled; so it is nothing like having a bucket full of fish sitting around.
In my systems, I have played around with various parameters until the fish get stressed. Stressed fish get sick, then usually die (unless the source of stress is eliminated immediately). Happy fish keep eating. fish grow when they eat. After they grow too much they get thinned out to have more space to grow (or get eaten). Same thing with plants, sort of.

Excellent! Great video... I hope those just getting started, are well aware of the plastic toxicity contamination potential when choosing petroleum based containers, hoses, poly liners and irrigation components... the longer a system is in use, the greater the risk is for hoses and containers to break down and leach toxins from the UV rays of the Summer Sun, from the heat, as well as contact with fertilizers and other chemicals. Don't just guess and hope for the best, try to source natural containers (ie: stone, clay or glass, etc...) and/or "Food Grade" approved containers/components every step of the way... one step forward is not worth two toxic steps backwards when it comes to you and your family's health ;)

In addition to solar, you should look into a groundwater source heat pump for heating your water. If you have groundwater in your area, you could use that to heat the water while cooling the building in the summer. If not, you could use fish tank water to cool your building while you heat the fish water. Another one could be used to cool the water the plants get while heating the water the fish live in. Check it out. These systems run basically on the cost of running a pump and could save you lots of money.
I would rather eat your tilapia and not the Chinese-raised tilapia where they feed the fish feces. The Chinese raised fish could not be good for you.

If you have an outdoor system, the yes, many fish species will eat the pests. Mosquitoes like to lay their eggs in still, dark spots of the water, so minimizing those areas to begin with will keep the pest population down in the first place.

I am a fan of aeroponics but this application is somewhat ineffective compared to cheaper alternatives. DWC raft based systems do not require expensive atomizers that get clogged and require maintenance. Raft systems are very easy to take care of.
There are also ways to maximize dissolved oxygen in the water without aeroponic hardware- resistant to mechanical failures.
