    Walking On The Moon is fire!!! Stewart Copeland is a genius drummer. His hi-hat work is unmatched...

    • @ShaneCarey
      @ShaneCarey 2 года назад +22

      Peter Gabriel had him on a track just to play JUST the hi-hat. ("Red Rain" I think?)
      An interviewer once asked Neil Peart, "What's it like to be God?" Peart replied, "You'd have to ask Stewart Copeland." Obvious fanboy hyperbole during his Big Police Fan years, but still, that's a fanboy to be proud of.

    That change in feel represents how he feels versus how she feels. She has all of these sultry, rhythmic ideas about him. But when she's close, he's breathy, tense and uptight. Music can challenge us to grow our understanding of what a composer might be doing with a sound. That can make formerly undesirable noises into important and welcome parts of a larger whole.

    A lot of bands in the U.K. in the late 70s and early 80s had a reggae influence due to the huge Jamaican influence on England from the 50s. • @edwardx.winston5744
      @edwardx.winston5744 2 года назад +12

      @ghost mall 100%. The Rush love affair with the Police started earlier than that, though. The first glimpse of it came in the end section of “Spirit of Radio” from 𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑊𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑠 and then “Vital Signs” off of 𝑀𝑜𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑃𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒𝑠. 𝑆𝑖𝑔𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑠 was the zenith of the Police influence, but it informed the band’s sound for at least a solid decade after that.
      Stuart Copeland influenced Peart, who influenced every prog metal drummer who ever lived after that. Copeland’s sound was the tastiest blend of reggae and Arabic rhythms mingled with touch, taste, and musical genius, ever. A total original: you can hear Copeland in other drummers, but you don’t hear other drummers in Copeland.
      Peart was a fiercely intelligent genius who played music (among other noteworthy artistic achievements). Copeland, on the other hand, was a musical genius.
      If I was forming a band, I’d want a 21 year old Peart. If I had one recording project that I was hoping would go platinum and needed the most creative, tastiest, grooviest drummer, I’d take Copeland at 21, today, or any age in between. Plays hi-hats like a surgeon with a scalpel: sharp and precise. Copeland is money.

      @@DylieBeans That’s utter nonsense, and all three members of Rush would tell you so. They loved the Police and said so openly during 80’s interviews.
      BTW, this is coming from someone who was in a Rush cover band in the 90’s and has been a lifelong Rush fan since 1982. I’ve spent long hours learning the band’s material. They’re a creative tour de force and one of the best hard rock bands of all time.
      But all three members of the Police are incredible musicians. Andy Summers is a fantastic rock and jazz guitarist who has worked on progressive rock projects with the likes of Robert Fripp of King Crimson. His chimey, chorused guitar tone and love of suspended 9th chords is all over Alex Lifeson’s 80’s and 90’s output.
      Stuart Copeland is a multi instrumentalist who composed movie scores and orchestral works after the Police broke up, in addition to being one of the most consistently brilliant and unique drummers in rock. He and Peart were friends in recent years prior to Peart’s demise.
      Sting is a pop music songwriting genius, a timeless vocalist, and a sophisticated arranger of bass parts.
      Like you, I MUCH prefer Rush to the Police overall. But neither band is “10,000x” better than the other. If Rush were so superior to the Police, why did the Canadian trio devote huge chunks of their 80’s output to incorporating the Police sound into their music? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

    I always liked the other version they did of this song where the chorus isn’t so bright and cheery. I think it was on one of their best of albums. Another one you should check out by then is “Wrapped Around Your Finger”

      I like them both but try not to compare the two. It's not like one was meant to replace the other. They came from very different places in the bands' relatively short existence. The second one is much more straight but brooding pop and was recorded after Stewart Copeland was injured and couldn't play, so he used synthesizers to produce the drum track. Sounds fine, but just different.

    The first band to incorporate reggae/ska into a mainstream rock context were probably the Beatles with Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da in 1968. Other bands were influenced by reggae after that, but the Police really made it an integral part of their sound and became super popular as a result. Also interesting is that Rush were really influenced by the Police during this period, and you can hear it in their ‘80s output, especially on Moving Pictures and Signals. First off, love you guys and your channel. Great to see you enjoy music I grew up with became a young adult too. (I'm 60) At the risk of enraging you and the other posters here, while there is the reggae influence in this song Copeland himself has pointed out that his style was influenced heavily by Arabic rhythms he heard as a youth. His father was a "diplomat" who had many posts in the Middle East and his family accompanied him on his travels. The Arabic and reggae sounds are very similar.
    His father actually worked for the CIA and as Stuart Copeland laughingly said in one interview, " While I was learning listening to drumming in the bazaar my father was busy overthrowing the government of Iran."
    Which of course opens the door to the entire "was the counter culture and rock nothing more than an intelligence/military operation" as many rock stars had families who had either intelligence or military backgrounds.
    THAT is a discussion for another day.

Also, Walter Becker's second solo album "Circus Money" (from the mid/ late aughts) is a collection of reggae songs. There was The Clash who used a lot of reggae on their second album, and there's a reggae section at the beginning of The Rage by Judas Priest on the album British Steel. But in general, bands that wanted to do Reggae just played Reggae, or Ska. This is immediately before the Ska revival blew up led off by The Specials on the Two Tone record label. Madness did Grey Day. The Members did Offshore Banking Business. Reggae was in the air for sure, just as it was crossing over into the mainstream charts and with white musicians jumping on the bandwagon like UB40. And reggae had been bubbling away in the UK among skinheads since the 1960s.
